Apr. 5, 1988Live Every Day Like It Would Be Your Last ©
by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even as a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away." James 4:14 KJV

God's love letter to us, the Holy Bible, tells us life is breif on this earth. God uses words we can understand to imprint indelibly upon our minds the uncertainty and shortness of our mortal life. The Bible tells us life on earth is like a shadow, (I Chronicles 29:15); like a flying shuttle, (Job 7:6); like a hurrying messenger, (Job 9:25); only a handbreath in extent, (Psalms. 39:5); like a weaver's web, (Isaiah 38:12 R.V.); and like a vanishing vapor. (James 4:14) KJV.

Much of the time our mortal view of life misses the divine point that we are living in eternity, not just the span of time we are on this earth.

The Rev. Grady Nutt, formerly of television's Hee-Haw, was the guest speaker at banquet in Cullman. His topic was "Live Every Day Like It Would Be Your Last." That night God took Rev. Nutt home to heaven as his small plane crashed.

You've heard the old saying, "I'd rather see a sermon than hear one any day!" I appeared on television with Rev. Grady Nutt, and Minnie Pearl a few weeks before his accident. He truly did live every day as if it would be his last. Life on this earth is fragile. Treat it with respect. Savor every moment as you experience the joy of Jesus.

Time, your non-renewable resource is very precious! Successful people take charge of their time. That entails time management. Time management is managing yourself. Your time is already framed for you-24 lovely hours per day. Ask God to direct you as you schedule your life into that time frame. Find a good calendar with space to write each day. Schedule personal and business items on your personal calendar. Coordinate with your desk calendar, or small business calendar and planner for your purse or attache case.

Many women in the workplace keep a daily time log. Nearly everyone has a priority list for each day. Set your priorities. Decide the prime time of the day when you are most alert and have the highest concentration power. Give top priority items this time.

When you plan your life, the unexpected and expected will come together in a delicate balance. Without planning, the unexpected will control your life.

Lord, direct my time management for kingdom living. Amen

Apr. 12, 1988Bloom Into The Extraordinary Person God Planted Inside ©
by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayestprosper and be in health even as thy soul prospereth." The Third Epistle of John, verse 2 KJV

She breezed inside the door, filling the whole room with sunshine as she flashed her million dollar smile. Her ravishing good looks demanded respect. Sounds as if I am describing a movie super star. No! I am giving you a picture of my senior high school economics teacher.

Mary Weathers loved what she was doing, teaching high school kids. Her students knew she loved her work. We caught her enthusiasm. I looked forward to attending her classes. Her positive thinking made her pretty. She was confident, but not pushy. She was powerful yet feminine. When the going got tough she was not afraid to lighten up and have a little frivolous fun.

When the 1956 senior class took their senior trip to Washington D.C., they chose Mary Weathers to be their sponsor. At my senior class's thirtieth class reunion, this author had the privilidge of presenting Mary Weathers with a sterling silver heart necklace, a gift from the class of 1956.

At some fleeting moment in time each one of us have yearned to be better than we are. We long to bloom into that extraordinary person we know is inside.

From this God given desire comes human progress. To begin to bloom, do what you love.

Malcolm Forbes, editor of Fortune Magazine, said, "The way you live most is to sort out what it is you most enjoy doing-what interests you-and then do that."

Develop your inner person. Hook up to the creator of the universe and follow His blueprint for life, the Holy Bible. Develop a strong faith, prayer life, self-confidence, then high self-esteem will follow.

Be yourself with courage and compassion. Be good to yourself. Put on a happy face. Follow yourdream! Work hard and succeed. God's desire is for you to bloom into that beautiful person that you know is inside you. Get a mental picture of that extraordinary person you know you are, and push yourself to become that person.

Lord, I desire to bloom into that extraordinary person you have planted inside me. Amen.

"And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it." - Psalms 90:17 KJV

Watching the beautiful, multicolored monarch butterfly flit from one flower to the other, my spirit became weightless. The soundless and unhurried movements of God's gorgeous creation gave the garden a sense of relaxation and timelessness. The dappled sunlight danced on the fragile wings of my inspiration. My thoughts were caught up in the metamorphosis of this beautiful creature from a cocoon, to a large swollen body with tiny 'shriveled wings, and finally an exquisite mature butterfly.

I thought of the parallel of the Christian life. The cocoon stage when we are born again and Christ wraps us in His blanket of love. Then we become hungry for His Word and begin to study the Bible, communicate with Him and grow. Through the struggle and pain of growth, in His perfection and His timing we become mature Christians. Beautiful like the monarch butterfly.

I read an article recently in CHRISTIAN LIFE MAGAZINE, "Soaring Like a Butterfly;" by Jeannie C. Riley. At one time in her country music career she was soaring like eagles with her number one hit "Harper Valley PTA." Now she travels around the country giving concerts using her platform to share her faith. She believes her ministry is to fly like a butterfly shedding multicolored beams of His love to people on a one-on-one basis.

Like Jeannie C. Riley, are you becoming a mature Christian and shedding God's multicolored beams of love to your family, people with whom you come in contact in the workplace and community?

The butterfly is one of the most beautiful of all insects and helps pollinate flowers to bring new life. Take your cue from God's gorgeous creature, the butterfly, and let God's beauty rest upon you.

Lord I desire to shed my cocoon and grow from an ugly larva into a beautiful butterfly. Amen.

May 3, 1988 - Mother's Day; The Most Important Job In The Universe ©
by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the Lord." Psalms 113:9 KJV

My heart was absolutely bursting with pride after watching on television the "Lady Liberty" 100 years celebration weekend festivities, 1986.1 was pleasantly surprised when I heard the wonderful voice of Sandi Patti close the event with the "Star Spangled Banner."

Sandi Patti's gospel singing career is soaring! She was awarded a Grammy for her duet with Larnelle Harris, "I've Just Seen Jesus." The Gospel Music Association named her "Female Vocalist of the Year." She has appeared on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. Her career credits go on and on. But, in an interview with "Christian Life Magazine", Sandi Patti said her "highest note" is MOTHERHOOD!

Like Sandi Patti, many women in the workplace are juggling careers and families. Ninety percent of women have children. Millions of Amercian women like being mothers and desire to strengthen the traditional family structure. Mothers have unconditional, unselfish love for their children. Mothers see possibilities, potentials, and hope in their children. They have a God given ability to create an atmosphere to nurture their children into mature adults.

Shirley Dobson, wife of famous author Dr. James Dobson, told an interviewer that motherhood may be the most important job in the universe!

Like Sandi Patti and Shirley Dobson, this columnist would give MOTHERHOOD top priority.

I am pleased to pay tribute to my mother. She continues to give me unconditional, unselfish love and encouragement. She laid the foundation of love on which I have built a full life. My daughter's life is a tribute to me. She is an excellent mother and a charismatic career woman. My two sons also make me proud to be a mother!

SO, I SAY TO YOU GREAT MOTHERS OUT THERE, HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

Lord, bless all mothers as we celebrate Mother's Day Sunday.

"He grants good sense to the Godly-His saints. He is their shield, protecting them and guarding their pathway. He shows how to distinguish right from wrong, how to find a right decision every time. For wisdom and truth will enter the very center of your being, filling your life with Joy." Proverbs 2:7-10 The Living Bible

The newscaster informed me over my car radio that Elizabeth Dole, United States Secretary of Transportation, had resigned her prestigious postition to help her husband, Senator Robert Dole, Senate Minority Leader, campaign for the Republican candidate for the President of the United States.

My thoughts rested upon the sacrifice Elizabeh Dole was making to be her husband's helpmate.

As Secretary of Transportation, Ms. Dole had literally been responsible for everything that moved. She was the first woman to head a United States Military Department, the U.S. Coast Guard. She had run a department with 100,000 employees, and a $27 million budget. Shouldering this great responsibility with much success, Elizabeth is a good role model for contemporary women in the workplace, as she also makes a success in her family life. Mrs. Dole makes no secret of her strong Christian faith. She prays to God for the right decision.

In an article written for Decision Magazine, she said, "God doesn't want worldly successes. He wants me. He wants my heart in submission to Him. Life is not just a few years to spend on self indulgence and career advancement. It is a privilege, a responsibility, a stewardship to be lived according to a much higher calling.

It was exciting to this columnist to hear the honorable Elizabeth H. Dole give the keynote speech at the Trade Press Luncheon for the National American Wholesale Groceries Association, last year. I was thrilled by her vogue appearance, her radient confidence, her knowledge, intelligence, and skill communicating with an audience.

This high profile lady is living proof that the intelligent, livley, determined woman who is whole mentally, physically and spiritually will find rhythm in her life as she finds her place in God's changing world.

The new emerging American woman is always becoming! The Holy Spirit enlightens today's Christian woman to know that her life is a series of new beginnings and renewals.

Like the honorable Elizabeth H. Dole, she can move into professional excellence for superior achievement.

A newspaper headline in April, 1988 - White House Race: Exit Bob, Enter Elizabeth.

A political race for 1988 will be interesting to watch. One newspaper said, "Elizabeth Dole could be the Dole on the national ticket, the Republican candidate for second spot."

Elizabeth Dole allows God to direct her life! Do you?

God direct my life. Amen

May 17, 1988Jump Heart Deep Into Life ©
by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"The thief (satan) cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I (Jesus) am come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly. " John 10:10 KJV

Today's woman is heart-deep in living. Women who work outside the home seem to be the rule, not the exception. They add mountains of positive contributions to the family, society and to their own personal self-esteem. But, if one's circumstances permit, it is great to stay home, being full time wife, mother and homemaker.

That's what is so great about living in these great United States of America. Women have a choice. Each woman can make her own choices depending on her individual preferences and circumstances. One may choose the tender trap of marriage and a family. She will be caught up in the strenuous, but stimulating tide of real life. Her soul will experience a deep richness, as she learns to care deeply about her family. She will know also through the sometimes difficult struggle of life that she is deeply cared about by her family.

On the other side of the coin, an older single woman reminisced about her single life. She had turned down several marriage proposals in order to give full time to her enjoyable career. She had had a joyful life, successful career, wealth and fame, and has traveled freely meeting new and exciting people. Many women enjoy a full life of marriage and family, plus career.

Helen Hunt, wife of Alabama Governor Guy Hunt, found herself in the limelight after many years of being a wife, mother, grandmother and pastor's wife. The day of Gov. Hunt's inauguration, Mrs. Hunt began the day with her husband at a prayer breakfast. At a press conference, Mrs. Hunt emphasized she would continue her role as traditional wife. The "First Lady of Alabama"' is handling her new position with dignity, grace and enthusiasm.

Mrs. Hunt takes the Bible promises, which she has tested in life, literally, to give her inner strength. Her inner strength of steel, and her femininity, truly make her a lady of "lace over steel." Mrs. Guy Hunt, "First Lady of Alabama," is heart-deep in living!

So are you, woman of today! Jesus paved the way for abundant life.

Lord, I am heart-deep in living. Direct my path. Amen.

May 24, 1988Mount Up With Wings of Eagles ©
by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"But they that wait upon the lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they sail run and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint." Isaiah 40:31 KJV

A female executive put the key to her office on a two inch square block of wood, key holder. On the block of wood was painted a flying eagle with the words, "Follow Your Dream."

Dream power gives the persistence to dare to be more. To be persistant one must have great strength. Today's woman could be compared with the "king of birds," the eagle. A symbol of strength, beauty, authority and freedom.

Like the eagle, today's woman has an inner unction to get higher and follow her dream. She does not direct her life by what is easiest or what is popular. Though she may be in the throes of defining a role for her self in our changing times, she will keep her life-balance. She will get ahead in the professional world-while at the same time maintaining her femininity and a strong homelife. At times the eagle enjoys loneliness, because she cannot afford to be bothered with other birds that do not want to fly higher.

Today's woman may be compared to that high flyer. Instinctively, in her heart, the big bird desires to go up to new heights. While other birds scratch for worms along the ground and chatter among themselves, the eagle chooses to soar alone. She finds what she wants and goes after it. The eagle doesn't eat only what she finds along the wayside, but she eats what she wants. She determines her own diet. She is in control. The eagle, although fearless in the storms of life, doesn't have the ability to stop them, but she can fly above them. Rising over the turbulence is a ploy she uses often.

You are an eagle-woman, able to rise above; majestic, strong and free. You create your own opportunities. Your inspiration, imagination, knowledge, fortitude and that tenaciousness to keep going when others say you can't makes you ruler over your life, with God as your pilot, He will enable you to make loneliness work for you; raise your young to be strong, whole individuals; rise above the storms of life; become richer through pain; rejoice evermore; enjoy your work and face death with peace.

As you wait upon the Lord, He will renew your strength. You will mount up with wings as eagles. You will run and not be weary. You will walk and not faint.

Lord, I desire to spread my wings and fly higher. Amen.

"Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weakness, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions in difficulties. For when I am weak, then am I strong." II Corinthians 12: 9-10 NIV

Joni Eareckson Tada is a shining example for each of us. Paralyzed in a diving accident at age 17, she has overcome. She is now married and has a career. She is a famous artist. (She paints with her a paint brush between her teeth.) She has also authored several inspirational books. She played herself in the movie, "Joni". Joni's personal relationship with Jesus Christ has given her power to rise above herself and her tragedy.

Let's face it! Pain is part of the fabric of each life. Physical, emotional, mental or social pain, if severe enough, can become our master. In the crucible of pain the unnecessary and frivolous values of life begin to fall away. Severe pain shifts our priorities. We learn the things that are really important in life. This one fact can become a source of richness for our lives. Pain brings us to our finite-ness. We must rely upon a higher power than ourselves. It makes us more; determined to build treasures in heaven, not on earth.

A terminally ill person becomes more aware of the life around her. She makes every moment count, using all her senses to the fullest. None of us like pain, but it can become our teacher. If we look beyond the pain we can learn the most important lessons in our lives. Pain often makes it possible for us to get our priorities in order. Pain can teach us real empathy for others in pain. It can make us a more caring person. Yes, pain points us to the glory of God.

"I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us." Romans 8:18 NIV

If you are enduring any sort of pain today, stop-be silent-listen to God. Ask Him to teach you the lesson you need to learn as you live through the pain. If you allow God to bring you through the pain, you will become a purer, finer, better person. God often develops our spiritual muscles through bereavement, pain and struggle.

Norman Vincent Peal said, "Trouble can be unpleasant and painful and damaging, but it can also be the flint that strikes sparks out of the STEEL in your soul."

Lord, I accept pain as part of the fabric of my life. Help me to look beyond the pain to learn the truths you want to teach me. I desire to grow through pain.

Jun. 14, 1988As The American Flag Flies, Freedom Reigns ©
by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"Blessed is the nation whose God Is the Lord..." Psalms 33:12KJV

Join me today in celebrating "Flag Day!" Many millions of Americans have given their life blood in the defense of the American Flag. For Americans our great flag has come to signify love and honor of our wonderful country. May these stars and stripes, a splendid living symbol of human dignity, liberty under law and precious opportunity of fulfillment of men's and women's hopes, wave proudly forever over our land of the free.

Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman associate justice of the United States Supreme court, is working daily to continue our liberty under law. Appointed by President Reagan in 1981, Ms. O'Connor has served her country well. She has certainly been a political pioneer for women. She was third in her class at Stanford Law School. After practicing law in Arizona while raising three
sons, she was elected to the Arizona State Senate in 1973. As we read in the daily newspapers about this great lady on Capitol Hill, we know in our hearts she is; "lace over steel."

Another great lady comes to mind, when I think about the Arnerican flag. Betsy Ross was the owner of a shop in Philadelphia which made flags during the American Revolution. Being an expert seamstress she may have made the first American flag. William J. Canby, Betsy Ross's grandson, tells the story of the making of the first official United States flag.

A committee headed by General George Washington visited Mrs. Ross in June 1776. These men gave her a rough design and asked her to make the first official flag. There is no proof this story is true. But, Betsy Ross was to be the official Pennsylvania Navy flagmaker. Like the country it symbolizes, the flag of the United States of America waves proudly proclaiming freedom for all.

As we watched through the media President and Mrs. Reagan's last visit to Russia, we got a glimpse of today's Russian woman. Raisa Gorbachev and Perestroika (distinquished by a vigorous social change) give the overworked, under-appreciated Russian woman "hope." However, I am glad to be an American woman.

American women are indeed blessed by God to live in the land of the free! As our flag waves proudly over our land today, let us praise God for our grand country. Pray for the ones in authority over us, and be thankful for God's watch care over our nation.

"In God We Trust."

Father, thank you for our wonderful country over which our flag flies. Amen.

Jun. 21, 1988Wealth From Hard Work Grows ©
by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"Hard work means prosperity, only a fool idles away his time." Proverbs 12:11, The Living Bible

Today's working women are on the move, ambitious, busy and rising to meet every challenge. Our place in American Society is changing so rapidly we are all breathless.

The Living Bible tells the working woman to "work hard and become a leader; be lazy and never succeed." Proverbs 12:24

There may be a few "natural leaders" around, but I suspect most women have to work at it. Management is a lifelong process of learning about yourself, other people and your work. The woman who works hard and becomes a successful manager of boss, remembers that her people are not machines, but they have feelings. The woman filled with love and wisdom will be the very best manager at home and at the office. She will encourage growth and develp-ment in the people around her. She will give her family and co-workers the freedom to be innovative and praise each one for good results. She gives criticism in a positive manner not to humiliate, but to help. Along with positive growth and production from working women, another plus is financial security.

The Living Bible gives us the rewards of hard work. "Wealth from gambling quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows." Proverbs 13:11

As today's woman works hard, she gains self assured elegance by the way she dresses performs and displays a positive attitude. As I interview women in the work place, I find that women believe the family unit is the basic unit of society. The majority desire monogamous, lifetime marriage for their male-female relationship. They find the role of mother, fulfilling.

When questioned about their faith, most women believe in God. They follow the Ten Commandments as a code of conduct. As I think about God's working women, and the family unity being the base of our society, I am proud of Phyllis Schlafly. She has fought for the preservation of the family unity as she has stood up against abortion and expanded so-called gay rights.

I agree with Phyllis Schafly, if working women of America are going to make a positive difference in our society, we must do it God's way.

Lord, enlighten me to live in today's changing world, God's way. Amen.

Jun. 28, 1988 - Become A Winner In Your Circle Of Life ©
by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not into thine own understanding."
"In all they ways acknowledge Him, and he shall direct thy path." Proverbs 3:5, 6 KJV

Within every woman there lies hidden wealth. Like an unmined shaft, her depths are teaming with nuggets of golden greatness. But, having the potential for extraordinary achievement that results in the fulfilling experience of satisfaction isn't enough. The nuggets must be mined, brought to the surface, taken through the fires of adversity and polished to their peak of brilliance.

Those American women who have discovered this untapped goldmine have torn the archaic veil of covering from them and opened the window of light to find a prevailing pattern, too long hidden under a defeatist attitude.

Once a woman has discovered the common thread of potential that runs through winners, she can tap into it. When she does, she can forge a pristine path toward fulfillment, happiness, health and a rewarding state of satisfaction beyond her wildest dreams. It can produce difference in the life of the American woman.

In recent years, ordinary women have discovered this pattern of success and turned the corner to greatness. Ordinary no more, they've become "winners" in the circle of business and family life. Some of the characteristics common to the new "upwardly mobile" American woman have been seen in the fact that she is confident, intelligent, educated, intuitive, not afraid to take a carefully calculated risk; and she is known as a hard worker. This new woman must have common sense, coupled with strength and dignity. She cannot fear old age, but must use the wisdom it gives to live the good life, and gain riches, honor, pleasure and peace.

The successful woman attains greatness when she creates a balance between her personal life and her career! Women in the work place could use Joan Lunden, co-host of the national television show, "Good Morning America," one of the most visible women in America, as a role model. She works at keeping her husband and wife relationship exciting and family life strong, while working hard with integrity to make her professional life succeed. Energetic Joan starts her day at 4 a.m. each day. She takes control of her time and makes every minute count for good. This beautiful career woman and her husband, television producer, Michael Krauss, put top priority on parenting their three little girls, Jamie, 8, Lindsay, 5, and Sarah, 10 months.

The whole family was involved in the taping of a videocassette for new parents entitled, "Your Newborn Baby." Mr. Krauss has a new book out by the same title. Joan and Michael produce a television show, "Mother's Day", which is viewed by 19 million people on Lifetime Cable Network six days a week.

Erma Bombeck said of Joan Lunden, "A Joan Lunden doll is every little girl's dream. Wind it up and it balances a daily network TV show, a cable show on mothers, lectures, public appearances, home, husband and three children."

"Joan is a prototype for women of the eighties and ninties who want it all without sacrificing integrity and the importance of family life."

Lord, I trust you to direct my path in these changing times.

Jul. 5, 1988Brighten The Corner Where You Are ©
by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

But thanks be to God! For through what Christ has done, he has triumphed over us so that now wherever we go he uses us to tell others about the Lord and to spread the Gospel like a sweet perfume." II Corinthians 2:14 Living Bible

Minnie Pearl, Grand Ole Opry star, spoke to a Christian ladies luncheon in Guntersville in the early '70's. She autographed her cookbook, "Minnie Pearl Cooks," for this author. She wrote me a personal note, "Brighten the corner where you are" - signed Minnie Pearl. The woman and the autograph have been an inspiration to me through the years.

Born Sarah Ophelia Colley in Centerville, Tennessee, Minnie Pearl rose to fame as she brightened many corners with her humor, wearing a dime-store hat with the dangling price tag and saying, "Howdee! I'm just so proud to be here!" She was the recipient of the highest honor in country music as she was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1975.

This author had the privilege of being interviewed by Minnie Pearl on her "Noon Show" live on WSM-TV Nashville. I can truly say when she walks into a room the room is filled with sunshine. She has a unique way of looking one in the eye and making one feel special. Her quick wit causes the audience to erupt with laughter. Her positive spirit is contagious. Like Minnie Pearl, God planted you with your own unique spirit and fire inside your own special world. His desire is for you to brighten that corner.

If you are a mother, you can be that beam of sunshine in your home. Have you noticed the mother seems to set the mood for the rest of her family? If she radiates the love, joy and peace of Jesus Christ, she has a calming, cheerful effect on the spirit of the home. You can also carry this beam of sunshine right into your workplace, just as Minnie Pearl. Encourage others as you spread joy!

"You are the world's seasoning, to make it tolerable. If you lose your flavor, what will happen to the world? And you yourselves will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. You are the world's light-a city on a hill, glowing in the night for all to see.

Don't hide your light! Let it shine for all; let your good deeds glow for all to see, so that they will praise your heavenly Father." Matthew 5:13-16 The Living Bible

Lord, I desire to brighten the corner where I am, today. Amen.

by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which Is In heaven Is perfect." Mt. 5:48 KJV

The first American woman to win a gold medal in gymnastics, in the 1984 Olympics, Mary Lou Retton made two "perfect 10" vaults. We loved sharing her victory on national television. But, would we have enjoyed sharing with her the three-thousand (plus) hours of anonymous sweaty tedium, of practice. Mary Lou's "perfect 10" was the result of a dream that gave her discipline, self-control and determination to work hard toward her goal.

It all began when an eight-year-old girl was sprawled out on the living room floor of her home watching Nadia win three gold medals at Montreal in 1976. Mary Lou Retton set her mind to win the 1984 Olympics. Then she started to work. Her optimism, grit, competitive style, based on speed, power, determination and adrenalin ensured Mary Lou's success. Her story has been well documented in the news media and all women in America gained inspiration and motivation.

Jesus says to us in Mt. 5:48 to strive for perfection. In all of life He knew we could never be perfect, but He encourages us to strive for perfection. One must give 100 percent to be a Gold Medal winner in the Olympics of life.

So, I say to each of you today, strive for perfection. Grow into maturity of godliness.

Mary Lou Retton could not have achieved fame and fortune at age sixteen through mediocrity. You will not win a gold medal in life through mediocrity. As did Mary Lou Retton, reach for the stars!

Lord, I will hold your hand as I strive for perfection. Amen.

"Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty - emancipation from bondage, - freedom. II Corinthians 3:17 The Amplified Bible

How exciting to turn our attention to the Democratic convention in Atlanta and observe the freedom of our political process. As I think about selecting a new U.S. President and Vice President, my mind goes back to the election of 1984.

Whether you lauded her political party or political platform, Geraldine Ferraro stood tall for every American woman. When the television news commentator emphatically announced, "Democratic presidential candidate, Walter Mondale, has announced his running mate, Geraldine Ferraro!", a chill of emotion ran through womanhood around this country. Tears of joy seeped out, dabbed with Kleenex, paper towels, corners of diapers and Xerox duplicating paper. Women of all persuasions, all colors, all ideals and all stations stood tall at the prospect that the opportunity had come for a woman to enter the second highest office in the government of the United States. A realization hit the world. It became a reality. If Geraldine Ferraro had been elected Vice President of the United States of America, she would become a full partner to the president. She wouldn't be relegated to "assistant" Vice President because she was female. Being female wouldn't reduce her salary. Her gender wouldn't make one bit of difference.

Although most didn't vocalize it, women in America joined in a vicarious dream. Here was a wife, mother, daughter, who wears a dress, wears makeup and high heeled shoes; who had the potential to attain her goal as early as 1984. Simply being chosen as a running mate with the elected candidate for President was a giant step toward greatness for all women everywhere. Geraldine Ferraro gave every American woman courage to look higher.

Ms. Ferraro will attend the 1988 Democratic convention as a special guest. She will also be a commentator for the ABC affiliate in Boston and the CBS affiliate in Chicago.

USA Today interviewed Geraldine Ferraro, Tuesday, July 12, 1988. When asked about her unsuccessful 1984 bid for Vice President of the United States, she responded, "If I look back on the whole thing, I think it was very positive. When I watch Jesse Jackson it puts into focus the '84 campaign as it pertains to this country. Between Jackson's campaign this year and 1984, we as a nation said, 'Enough already: we're going to let everybody have a chance to participate.' That's the big thing that nobody can take away."

This great country is continuing to walk toward freedom for every individual. The individual who chooses to be filled with God's Spirit is free indeed! Jesus Christ is the true liberator for all.

Thank you for the freedom of living in this great country. Fill me and this country with your Spirit. Amen.

by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men; knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of your inheritance. It is the Lord whom you serve." Colossians 3:23-24

The t-shirt caught my attention. It read, "full-time keeper of my home." The gorgeous young woman wearing the t-shirt was surrounded by her beautiful family. (The family is God's masterpiece.)

Evidently this young lady had the privilege and desire to stay home and be a full-time wife, mother, and homemaker. She portrayed spiritual sparkle.

On the other side of the coin there are women like Dr. Joyce Brothers, best-selling author and media psychologist. She said in an interview with the Tennessean Newspaper, "After years of juggling marriage, work and motherhood, I am neither weary, nor burnt out. My work is stimulating emotionally, and financially rewarding. I have a good marriage, a wonderful husband, a beloved daughter and enchanting grandchildren."

Dr. Joyce Brothers advised women that being a superwoman is a myth, but having it all isn't. A woman can have it all but not at one time. All of us feel as if we are doing a high wire juggling act, at one time or other. We must know what we want from our life, set goals and priorities. We must make the most of the support system around us to be the best that we can be. By support system I mean-husband, older children, friends, grandparents, baby sitters, good child care, facilities, church and community.

Whether today's woman goes into the work force or stays at home, she is a busy one.

If you can change diapers or careers, maybe both, your lofty goals should be to keep your life in the center of God's perfect will for you. He has a special plan for each life.

Some suggested lofty goals:
1. Communicate constantly with God. Plan a special time daily to talk to Him and listen as you worship and adore Him.
2. Direct your life daily by His roadmap, the Bible.
3. Glorify God with your life.

The rewards of these lofty goals are eternal.

Lord, I desire to be in the center of your perfect will for my life. Amen.

Aug. 2, 1988Cast All Your Anxiety Upon God ©
by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you." I Peter 5:7 NIV

Working women must cope with stress. Stress is all demands upon one's life, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually which wear and tear one's being. No one escapes stress in varying degrees.

This author believes one of the most over-stressed persons in America is the working mother with pre-school children. These delightful children, gifts from God are takers of a mother's time, energy and emotion. Leaving a pre-school child for a work day is stressful and often guilt ridden. There is no end to caring for a child's need, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

If a working mother has a husband, she feels not only her stress and her children's stress, but also her husband's stress. The single, widowed or divorced mom must raise the children along, while being solely responsible for their daily bread. All of  these situations spell stress.

The complicated world in which we live is stressful. Responsibility, traffic, relationships, work-related stress, poor health, etc. can make each of us want to stay in bed each day. God uses stress to draw us to himself and teach us his sufficiency. Stress helps us to put our priorities in order.

The working woman who has committed her life to Christ, will accept, adapt and control her stress. She believes God's work, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts." Isaiah 55: 8-9 NIV

Egads! I'm a cockeyed optimist! I have faith you can handle your stress. First, keep healthy-eat properly, exercise at least three times a week, get enough rest, stop smoking, stop taking drugs and stop worrying. With a positive attitude, plan your time, grow mentally, spiritualy and stay in control of your emotions. Pace yourself and spend time daily with your creator in Bible study and prayer.

Lord, help me have your balance in my life, as you teach me to accept, adapt and control life's stress. Amen.

Aug. 9, 1988Dream Big ©
by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"For a dream cometh through the nultitude of business..." Ecclesiastes 5:3 KJV

Diane Sawyer, co-editor of CBS's "60 Minutes" gives credit for her big dreams to Catherine Marshall. Ms. Marshall was judge when Diane won America's Junior Miss in 1963. She challenged the contestants with these words, "Think of the most you could do with your lives. Make what you do matter. Above all, dream big."

With Catherine Marshall's advice and the helpful guidance of her father, Diane Sawyer has dreamed big and made, her dreams come true.

You, too, must have a dream. Plant that dream like a laser beam in your heart and go for it! You can do it. Yes you can. Don't let the fear of failure make you miss the thrill of trying.

Mary Kay Ash, chairman of the board of Mary Kay Cosmetics, says that she failed forward into success. When she retired after twenty-five years in direct sales for a large corporation, she dreamed of a company that would follow the golden rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." She started Mary Kay Cosmetics and fulfilled her dream.

Dreams are the motivating force that will keep you exhilarated and moving forward on life's exciting path. Your big, realistic dream gives you the positive, assertive drive to work hard to accomplish your goals. The power in your dreams adds zest to your life.

Wise old Solomon wrote, "...a dream comes true through working long and hard. (Paraphrase Ecc. 5:3B)

Your very own dream will give you persistance, ability to make tough decisions, the desire to go the second mile, and the will to work hard.

Cynthia Freeman, author of the novel Illusion of Love, made this statement in Parade Magazine, "Dreams don't turn gray." She was 55 years old when she wrote her first novel, A World Full of Strangers. At 70 years old she has written seven books.

The woman in the workplace who has a vision, believes she can accomplish her dreams, sets attainable goals, and is persistant in reaching those goals, has strength to perservere in the face of many difficulties. Today's woman can be whatever she wants to be if she has a dream and is willing to work for it.

Lord give me your dream to find the new land of opportunity in my life. Amen.

"A gracious woman retaineth honour:..." Proverbs 11:16 KJV
"Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands." Proverbs 14:1 KJV

Philippine President, Corazon Aquina, on her first official visit to the United States was very verbal about her faith in God and her faith in the Philippine people. She relied upon her faith in God to keep her family together when her husband, Ninoy was incarcarated for seven years, seven months and then shot by the military. She is continuing to rely upon that same fatih in God to give her power and security during her reign as President of the Philippines.

President Aquino's fifteen year old daughter was interviewed by "Good Morning America" in 1986 when she visited the United States. She told the interviewer that her mother was a good mother as well as a good president. She confided that her strong faith in God had been instilled in her by her mother. Corazon Aquino is glad her daughter can now live in a free country where she has freedom of expression and freedom from fear.

Many times we look at powerful people as super human people with no problems. However, in reality, leaders are people with heavy responsibilities. We should pray for them. If you are a single parent, making a living for your kids, and you are discouraged, take Philippine Presidnet Corazon Aquino as your role model. If she can be a single parent and run a country, you can be a successful single parent and do your best on your job.

Like the Philipppine president you can balance your personal and work life. Develop in yourself that beautiful zest for life that all powerful people possess. Balance your professional and personal life so your life will be complete. Maintain your femininity while balancing and directing you creative energy to make your life move in the direction you desire.

Through the positive power of Jesus Christ, you will be able to balance your professional and personal life. Jesus Christ is not some mystical figure who works magic somewhere out in the universe. He is real. He is as close to you as your breath, and He cares about you right now, where you are. His desire is to have a personal relationship with you, to love you, guide you and take care of you.

I ask you to help me balance my personal and professional life through the positive power of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Aug. 23, 1988 - Child Care A Concern For Working Moms ©
by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"Lo, Children are an heritage from the Lord; and the fruit of the womb is his reward!" Psalms 127:3 KJV

The best gift you can give your child is a secure home based on love. A place where laughter rings in the rafters! A home where joy fills the air! A haven where the sunshine of love beams in every corner!

One of the basic responsibilities of a working mother is the very best child care for her kids. With more mothers moving into the workforce a new term, "latchkey kids," has become a part of our vocabulary. This term is given to children who require keys to their homes to let themselves in after school, because no none is at home. Nationally, more than 6.5 million children aged 13 and under fall into the latchkey category, according to a Children's Defense Fund survey.

Researcher Lynette Long, American University, Washington D.C., said "Latchkey kids are depression targets."

It can be scary when a child goes in to an empty house. Times can be lonely. The child has no one to tell good news or bad. Many parents can't accept personal phone calls at work except in case of an emergency, so the child can't call his parents on the telephone.

Working mothers of America work hard to provide good child care for their children, but at times it is impossible and they must be left alone. Many communities are becoming positively, actively involved. For instance, in Huntsville, a "Latchkey Coalition" is being formed. The Phone-Friend program is being developed to provide the "latchkey child" someone to talk to.Each Phone-Friend volunteer will be required to take the Red Cross first-aid training.

Many agencies are getting involved in helping ease the stress of lonely children - Girls Club, Boys Club, police departments, city schools, Action Center, HELPLINE, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, United Way, YWCA, SCAN, Red Cross, Senior Center and Telephone Pioneers.

Children are America's natural resource for the future. Let's work together to keep them strong and healthy. As you reevaluate your home life, your work and the are of your children while you away, pray God will direct your path.

Lord, lead me to the best child care for my children while I am working. Amen.

Aug. 30, 1988 - Tips For Women On Building Much Needed Self-Confidence ©
by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"I will go in the strength of the Lord God..." Psalms 71:16

There is something really exciting about watching a woman, who is feminine in every way, exude an aura of confidence. There is a liberating quality about it.

The latest Gallup pole of USA women vote self-confidence the most important criterion for career success. How can today's woman uncork the magic of her confidence for personal and professional excellence for superior living? The woman who desires to uncork the magic of self confidence will love God. She will love the special person He has created in her; therefore, setting her free to love others.

Let's start at the beginning. The foundation for high self-esteem and self confidence is the postivie response, focused attention, quality time and unconditional love a child receives from her parents. As young girls grow into maturity, praise will also help develop a good self-image.

Kenneth Bandchard, Ph.D., and Spencer Johnson M.D., reinforce this principle of self-confidence in the best selling book, The One Minute Manager. "Help people read their full potential, catch them doing something right."

It's true, praise builds confidence. Along with praise, positive feedback, and rewards, two other principles that build self-confidence are keeping our priorities in order and setting and reaching goals. Simply create that attainable goal and write it down. Set a time limit and be persistent in reaching that goal. When that first goal is reached, set a higher one. Keep growing and becoming the woman God has created you to be. As you grow, spend time with high acheivers who bring out the best in you.

In the book, Self-Esteem, The New Reformation, Dr. Robert H. Schuller states, "Because the human being is created in the image of God. The will to dignity is the irreducible, psychological, and spiritual nucleus around which the life of the human soul revolves and evolves. The need for dignity, self-worth, self-respect and self-esteem is the deepest of all human needs."

Lisa Whelchel used her self-confidence to gain success as Blair on NEC's "The Facts of Life." She uses her visibility as a television star to faith. Since music is the universal language, she has expanded her ministry to singing. People will flock to any given location to be entertained by the Christian. Like Lisa Whelchel, with confidence you can go to the top of your dreams.

Lord, I want to be the best that I can be. All that you have created in me. Like someone else I cannot be. I just want to be me. Amen.

Sept. 6, 1988 - Women Hang Up Aprons, Move Into Workplace ©
by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates." Proverbs 31:31 KJV

As more women hang up their aprons and move into the workplace, changes will continue to become reality for individual women. Also, changes are inevitable as a society. Contemporary women will face each change head on while listening to the Lord for direction. A woman must stay in touch with her creator, herself, and the changing world.

The wheels of society never turn back. We are enterting a new lifestyle for women. With God's guidance we will be winners.

Rep. David Obey, D-Wis., chairman of the Joint Economic Committee, tells us many mothers are not only cooking the bacon, they are helping to bring home the bacon. According to the congressional report, more USA moms are taking jobs to supplement their husband's salaries. The working woman desires a strong, happy family life. She has double duty. In her struggle to juggle career, homelife, wife, mother, homemaker, relationships, etc. a woman must realize that she can't be all things to all people. She must set priorities and pace her self. If she overloads her circuits, she will blow a fuse.

A working woman must not have too much pride to appreciate help and support from the people around her. The greater the network of support, the greater her flexibility. This flexibility is seen in the working woman as she changes hats. As she leaves her working hat at the workplace at the end of the working day, she successfully changes hats to wife, mother, homemaker.

Joan Lunden, co-host of Good Morning America on ABC-TV does a great job of changing hats. Her hours at ABC are 4:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. She is home with her baby by noon. She picks up her older girls at school. She spends most afternoons and evenings with her family. She was an Outstanding Mother of the by the National Mother's Day Council, 1982.

With God as our pilot, women can be winners during these changing times.

God, give me vision and strength during changing times. Amen.

Sept. 13, 1988 - The Beauty Of Courage ©
by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™ ©

"I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me." Philippians 4:13 KJV

My heart was pounding with excitement and my vision blurred with tears. I was watching a teen-aged girl compete in the 1988 International Grand Championship Walking Horse Show at Murphreesboro, Tenn. Even though she had muscular dystrophy, this courageous girl went to the top of her dreams.

If you watched Jerry Lewis raise $40 million for "His Kids" on the Labor Day Telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, you witnessed the beauty of courage in it's most beautiful sense. The people who are living with Muscular Dystrophy do not have a perfect life, but they have a great passion for life. Some words that come to my mind as I describe these special people are faith, courage, fight, uplifting thoughts, positive thinking, energy, enthusiasm, big dreams and high hopes.

When I think of the beauty of courage, my mind goes from the super people who are living with muscular dystrophy to Ted Kennedy Jr., who lost his right leg to cancer when he was twelve years old. Today, young Kennedy is in his late twenties. He uses his Boston-based foundation, Facing the Challenge, to push for better enforcement of laws providing jobs and access for the handicapped. Ted Kennedy Jr. has faced his challenge with courage, a positive attitude, staying tough and not letting the unfairness of life defeat him. He has played the cards life has dealt him magnificently. He skis and sails to prove a one-legged person can pursue excellence. His skiing and sailing unlocks his handicapped cage. When he skis downhill at 65 miles per hour he does not feel impaired, slow or handicapped. It gives him freedom and liberty.

If vou have adversity in your life today "hang tough" with young Kennedy. Take adversity and turn it back. That's a central challenge of everyone's life. The "Lace Over Steel" woman of today will face the challenges in her life with courage, positive attitude, positive action and faith.

"Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope In the Lord." Psalms 31:24 KJV

Lord, I will meet the challenge of today with the beauty of your courage. Amen.

Sept. 20, 1988 - Miss America: Role Model, Not Beauty Queen ©
by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us: yea, the work of our hands establish thou it." Psalm 90:17 KJV

What's the first thing I thought after watching the Miss America pageant from Atlantic City? The fifty-one beautiful representatives were indeed role models, not beauty queens. The theme of the pageant was success, growing into one's full potential.

Leonard Horn, Miss America's executive director, said, "The contestants are multi-faceted young women who are more than just physically attractive and talented. They are dynamic young career women."

Fourth runner up, Jenny Lee Jackson, 21, of Auburn, represented Alabama with great class. She made me proud to be from the great state of Alabama.

Classic beauty, Gretchen Elizabeth Carlson, Miss Minnesota, was crowned Miss America 1989. She epitomized the new emerging America woman-intelligent, self-confident, goal oriented, high spirited, energetic, enthusiastic, beautiful and disciplined. Gretchen is called "Sparkles" by her friends. She sparkle charges a room with excitement when she enters. Not only is Gretchen enthusiastic, she also sets high goals for herself. She is currently a Stanford University senior and plans to enter Harvard Law School.

I am mighty proud to have her represent my great country, the United States of America, in 1989!

Miss America, 1989, will follow the outstanding reign of Kaye Lani Rae Rafko, a nurse from Monroe, Michigan. Kay Lani made charity appearances during the year. She has made a difference in our world. Her goal is to eventually own her own hospital for terminally ill patients and AIDS patients.

I have high hopes for the young American women in the 1990's with such role models as the fifty-one contestants of the 1989 Miss America Pageant.

The emerging American woman is no air head. She intelligent, a hard worker, a physically and mentally fit. She will make a great wife, mother homemaker and career women. She has high-style for high impact.

I see the beauty of God beaming through American women.

Lord, I ask the beat of God be upon me and establish my work. Amen.

Sept. 27, 1988 - It's Here! The Fabulous Season Called Fall ©
by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease." Genesis 8:22 KJV

Fall Is here. Let's give it a big cheer. These fall days are grand! A welcome relief from summer's oppressive heat. This summer was a beast.

During the summer, temperatures sizzled. I believe the sun could have fried an egg on the top of my head in the heat of the day. It was dry. Crops and lawns withered as prices rose. Now, the glorious transitional time of autumn has arrived. I anticipate the leaves changing into vibrant, brilliant colors painting Sand Mountain post card beautiful. I love the cool crisp air that makes my spirits rise high as the sky.

Thinking about the excitement of the exquisite autumn season, my thoughts turned to the extraordinary "Lace Over Steel" woman in the autumn of her life. She will grow new, not old. God's beautiful women mellow and refine with age. Experience brings with it a deeper, much more interesting beauty. The adage, "over forty-over the hill," no longer has any credibility. Time and tone can go together to create an appealing woman. Today's woman makes the most of each day in every way, anticipating the future as new horizons to be explored.

Overcoming the fear of aging, mature women open the door to growth and new possibilities. Getting older can be wonderful. Keeping fit and enthusiastically positive can create new exciting opportunities, challanges and Joy. Just look at Barbarba Bush in the exhilarating autumn years of her life. With a husband running for President of the United States and a very large family,
she meets each day with great anticipation.

In Barbara Bush's Diary for USA Today, she revealed she had been keeping scrapbooks of her family for 40 years. She has completed nearly 50 scrapbooks. Like Barbara Bush, America's mature women have learned to celebrate life. Attractive, vibrant and successful, they bear luscious fruit during their exciting, maturing years. Psalms 1:1-3

The autumn season of the year. and the autumn season of one's life is exciting!

Lord, help me grow new in the autumn of my life while I enjoy the beautiful fall season.

by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap if we faint not." Galations 6:9 KJV

The excited voice of my friend on the other end of the telephone line sounded urgent!

"Did you see the 6 a.m. newscast?" she asked.

"No," I responded.

"Your publisher was burned to the ground last night by an arsonist," she lamented.

As I put the receiver back on the cradle, my head was spinning as if I had been hit by a baseball bat.

With two books published and two contracts signed for new books, I had been a pioneer with my publisher. I was their first inspirational author.

The publisher went out of business. This incident happened in 1984. After 12 years of work, this author was back to the starting line. You are reading this article because this writer is persistent. I plan to turn failure into success with prayer, study, hard work,
integrity and persistence.

The word persistence reminds me of a question I asked Ms. Colleen Freeman, former mayor of Saint Petersburg, FL. "If you had one thing to say to today's woman, what we you tell her?"

She smiled at me and said "Never give up!"

I also interviewed a commercial real estate executive, wife, mother and homemaker, Connie Formby. She said, "To be a winner, you can touch the ultimate in life by taking charge of your life, God in control, and be persistent. Persistence is one of the keys to success."

God planted a dream in my mind to write for His glory. I persue this dream with tenacity. Has God planted a dream in in your mind ? You can do it! Follow your dream!

Lord, help me to never give up as I persevere in living this wonderful life you have given me. Amen.

Oct. 11, 1988 - Like Columbus, Follow Your Dream ©
by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"For a dream cometh through the multitude of business;..." Ecclesiastes 5:3 KJV

Yesterday our great nation celebrated "Columbus Day." The discovery of America by Christopher Columbus is one of history's most important events. Why did Christopher Columbus follow his dream, against all odds, to land on the shores of a new world Oct. 12,1492?

One of the greatest seaman in history, this man of great moral and physical courage, firmly believed God created him to make great discoveries to spread Christianity.

The "lace over steel" woman has dream power.

Once a dream is planted in your mind, write it like a laser beam in your heart. Formulate, plan it, then go with it. Use that dream power to fortify your determination and persistence.

Experts say, a woman uses only 10 percent of her talents and abilities. Imagine the success of those women who discover a way to increase that to 20 percent. That's double ability, double talent, double the amount of accomplishment. There's no stopping the woman who has a dream and is determined to see it through. Having your very own dream gives you the positive energy to go the second mile. Be a second miler. Dare to be a successful woman. The positive power of success can give you great enthusiasm for life.

Enthusiasm has a Greek origin, meaning, "God within. It is this "power within," that is today's American business woman's greatest asset. Be a modern Christopher Columbus. Dream big! Follow that dream! Discover the "new land" of opportunity in your life.

Lord, like Christopher Columbus, I desire to follow the dream you have given me, Amen.

by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"...I (Jesus) am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. " Saint John 10:10 KJV

The world's tallest peak was conquered Sept. 29, 1988 by the first American woman. Stacy Allison, 30, of Portland, Oregon, reached the top of Mount Everest. Only six other women from other countries have reached the summit. Stacy Allison had a dream. She set goals and worked hard. She is classified as a high achiever.

John R. Noe in his book "Peak Performance for High Achievers" gives six attitudes of high achievers:
1 - High achievers make no small plans.
2 - High achievers are willing to do what they fear.
3 - High achievers are willing to prepare.
4 - High achievers are willing to risk failure.
5 - High achievers are teachable.
6 - High achievers have heart.

You and I witnessed the high achievements of the 1988 Olympic gold medal winners. In one moment in time these competitors were the best they could be. God desires for each one of us to set high goals for ourselves. When we reach each goal we should use it as a launching pad to stretch to higher peaks of mountain living.

The highest motivation for any woman is to know God lives within her with all his unlimited power. Life is a great adventure like mountain climbing. Let's live it with gusto!

Lord, I desire to climb life's mountains with you in control. Amen.

Oct. 25, 1988 - Worry Muddles The Mind ©
by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"Don't worry about anything; instead pray about everything; tell God your needs and don't forget to thank him for his answers." (Philippians 4:6 The Living Bible)

If you see ten troubles coming down the road, you can be sure that nine will run in the ditch before they reach you." Calvin Cooliage.

Most of the things women worry about never happen! Much worry is the dread of tomorrow and the burdens of yesterday. Worry is counterproductive. It will rob today's woman of her joy and peace. The productive woman has been known to loose a whole day to worry.

The word worry comes from a Greek word meaning, "to divide the mind." The worried mind is torn, worn and peaceless. Worry could be compared to a rocking chair. You won't get anywhere, but you will have something to do. Worry muddles the mind just as drugs, alcohol and disease. It will not allow a "Lace Over Steel" woman to be the best she can be.

Margaret Thatcher, Prime Minister of England, has great responsibility, but her motto is "Accentuate the Positive." Her favorite song is the 1945 hit,"Accentuate the Positive."

The song says:
"Eliminate the negative,
Latch on to the affirmative,
Don't mess with Mr. In-Be-tween."

Like Margaret Thatcher, today's woman must eliminate worry and latch on to the affirmative. Worry is an inside job, but it will die in a thankful heart. So, count your blessings, not your burdens.

Lord, I replace worry with prayer and thanksgiving. Amen.

"...Oh, that you would wonderfully bless me and help me in my work; please be with me in all that I do, and keep me from all evil and disaster!..." I Chronicles 4:10, The Living Bible.

Do you have a full schedule or a fill life? If you are like most modern women, you may feel too busy, overworked, overwhelmed by the hectic pace and pulled in all indirections. Living in the fast lane often takes enormous energy. Busy lifestyles often cause American women to feel fragmented, disconnected, alienated or even bored.

How can one get off the merry-go-round of a full schedule and focus on a full life?

First, define success for your own life. This columnist believes her success is measured by the quality of her relationship to God and the people in her life. American women who want to live a full life must not measure success by the trinkets of materialism, but the feeling of love, joy and peace through the presence of God.

Shirley Boone, wife of singer Pat Boone, leads a busy life in the fast lane. She is wife, mother, grandmother, popular conference speaker and author. Yet, she says she feels "free as a bird." Her full life is a direct results of her deep growing faith. Like Shirley Boone, today's woman must turn her time table over to the leading of the Holy Spirit to replace a full schedule with a full life!

My prayer for you dear reader:
1. That God would wonderfully bless you.
2. That God would help you in your work.
3. That God would be with you in all that you do.
4. That God would keep you from all evil and disaster.

Nov. 8, 1988 - Nancy Reagan: A Gracious Lady ©
by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"A gracious woman retaineth honor..." Proverbs 11:16 KJV

As we exercise our great American privilege to vote today, we will be choosing a new president of the United States and a new "First Lady." Our new "First Lady" will follow Nancy Reagan, who is indeed a gracious lady.

Webster defines gracious as "1-having or showing kindness, courtesy, charm. 2-merciful; compassionate. 3-indulgent or polite to supposed inferiors."

The American women have been blessed, having for eight years, a gracious "First Lady," Nancy Reagan. She is a good role model for wives, mothers and career women. Her close association with the problem of drug abuse in our great nation is having a positive effect upon the solution. She reveals power and compassion behind her classy beauty.

President Reagan's nickname for his lovely wife is "Pee-Wee Powerhouse." The President said, "Knowing her, being married to her is kind of like coming into a warm, firelit room when you've been out in the cold. She's a tiny little thing, but I once nicknamed her Pee-Wee Powerhouse."

Wise old Solomon told us, "A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones." Nancy is certainly a crown to President Reagan. Nancy Reagan is a gracious lady who has made a difference in the world. She is the only "First Lady" to address the United Nations. She said, "The war on drugs is a global battle and we will win it one child at a time."

Like Nancy Reagan, you, too, can make a difference in your world as you move about it with your own special charm, compassion and kindness. Success in business and home-life comes thorugh sensitivity to the needs of others. Fairness must flourish. Most gracious women that I know personally are honest, decent human beings that stand tall above the crowd. A gracious woman who is self-confident is set fee to love and praise other people. Praise is a top notch way to manage and motivate people. A gracious woman is an encourager.

The new "Lace Over Steel" .woman in these changing times is emerging as a gracious lady who is in touch with herself and the times.

Thanks Nancy Reagan for being our gracious "First Lady" for eight years!

Lord, teach me to be a gracious lady.

Nov. 15, 1988 - Sarah Josepha Hale: Campaigning For Thanksgiving ©
by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send potions unto them for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy unto our Lord; neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength." Nehemiah 8:10 KJV

November is a wonderful time for families to get together and enjoy sumptuous food, and warm fellowship, celebrating the national holiday, Thanksgiving. Most of us think the national holiday started when fifty-one pilgrims survived the trip on the Mayflower and gathered to celebrate after their first fall harvest. Governor William Bradford did indeed proclaim that day a day of thanksgiving for God's blessing.

However, President Lincoln officially proclaimed the forth Thursday in November a national Thanksgiving holiday in 1863. President Lincoln made the proclamation as a direct result of the persistent campaign of the editor of Godey's Lady's Book, Sarah Josepha Hale. For 36 years one woman worked for her idea: a national day of Thanksgiving. Sara Josepha Hale used her Godey's Lady's Book, the most widely distributed periodical in the United States, to infiltrate the nation with her idea. She wrote, "Thanksgiving, like the forth of July, should be a national festival observed by all our people."

On Sept. 28,1863, Sarah wrote President Lincoln, urging him to proclaim Thanksgiving a national holiday. October 3,1863, President Lincoln read this proclamation: "I do, therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday in November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficient Father who dwelleth in the heavens." The proclamation was a 75 birthday present for Sarah Hale.

One hundred twenty-five years later, Americans say with William Seward, "No human counsel hath devised, nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the most high God.

Sarah Hale proved that one woman can make a difference!

Praise God from whom all blessing flow. Amen

Nov. 22, 1988 - Thanksgiving: Focusing On God And Family ©
by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"Offer unto God thanksgiving and pay thy vows unto the Most High." Psalms 50:14 KJV

Celebrating Thanksgiving Day, with our focus upon God, country and family gives me great joy. As I prepare for our family Thanksgiving feast, centered around the traditional turkey with pumpkin pies, my heart sings for joy and pounds with patriotism.

We live in the greatest country in the world. America is the symbol of hope and the gateway to freedom to all the world. How appropriate that we should pause and thank God! Not only do we thank God for our country, we also recognize the blessing of being a part of a family. The family is God's masterpiece! God intended for the family to be filled with unconditional love, joy, harmony and acceptance. Home should be a sanctuary of love from the cold, sometimes unlovely, outside world.

This summer, during our travels, our family had the privilige of standing on the spot where the first Thanksgiving was offered to the Lord in the new land of America. I received a new vision of the debt of graditude we owe our forefathers. However, patriotism is not only giving glory to the great past. Each generation must carry forward liberty and freedom in the future. America must continue to be a beacon of hope to the world.

On Thursday, our thoughts may turn slightly to the Alabama-Auburn football game or the super shopping day on Friday, but the main theme of the day will be God, country and family.

So, let's magnify the Lord and exalt His Name together!

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"'Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?" I Corinthians 3:16 KJV

Judi Sheppard Missett has been one of the business women who has helped women in the 1980's stay "fit." She is president of Jazzercise Inc. Along with nationwide Jazzercise franchises, she has six videos out. She created two best-selling jazz dance videos, albums, one of which is gold, and her special line of workout clothing.

This entrepreneur has capitalized on the new Ameircan woman desiring to be her best.

Missett says, "You need to figure out how you are going to be in the best shape to live the life you are living." Missett started her business in church basements teaching in dance classes. In 1987 her fitness francheses, along with books, fitness-gear and videos gave her an income of $13 million. She was given the 1988 Harriet Alger Award by Working Woman Magazine. The magazine calls Judi Sheppard Missett the "Passionate Pioneer of Fitness; Franchising."

Like Judi, you can have a "fit body" with desire, a plan, persistence and hard work. Personal excellence doesn't just happen. It is acheived from a workable plan. When it comes to fitness and health, there is no substitute for hard work. The new American woman is full of sap!  Because of her myriad responsibilities, today's woman must be energetic, alert, attractive and healthy-in a nutshell "fit."

Fitness is the result of a planned regime and is maintained only through continued effort. Peace of mind and liking yourself and others is a prerequisite to health and fitness.

In plannng for fitness, three areas of importance should be recognized: diet, exercise and mental attitude.

Diet: Paramount to fitness is a balanced diet. By using the basic four food groups as a guide, an adequate diet can be planned.
Exercise: The second component of fitness of equal importance to diet is exercise. Exercise yields multiple returns: a trim appearance, a healthier cardiovascular system, increased energy and improved stamina. An exercise program should fit into your lifestyle.
Mental attitude: Once you've planned your own special fitness program, get a mental picture of the woman you know you are capable of being. Set you goal at being that woman.

Lord, I desire to be the best that I can be. Amen.

Dec. 6, 1988 - Lou Holtz Explains Three Steps To High Self-Esteem ©
by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"Do to others as you would have them do to you." Luke 6:31 NIV

Lou Holtz gained my respect as he led his Notre Dame football team to an 11-0 regular season. They are only one step away from their eighth college national championship.

As I observed the self-esteem of the Notre Dame football players on TV, I remembered hearing Lou Holtz give his three rules for high self-esteem in a speech this summer. Coach Holtz was the keynote speaker at a convention which I attended.

Holtz said, "I tell my players at the beginning of the season, 'I want you to apply three simple rules in your lives for high self-esteem: 1-Do right! (If you have any doubt, get out the Holy Bible.) 2 - Be the best you can be. 3 - Follow the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." ' "

If the legendary coach Holtz is a winner with these three simple rules, the "Lace Over Steel" woman of today can be a winner by applying these three simple rules to her life.

High self-esteem is liking yourself. If you don't like yourself, you can't help other people. A good self image is a product of knowing each person is made in the image of God. A "Lace Over Steel" woman should not allow circumstances or people to diminish her self image.

Coach Lou Holtz said, "People succeed and are happy because they choose to be."

Lord, help me to do to others as I would have them do to me. Amen.

by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"...I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." St. John l0:10 KJV

All over the Christian world women are decorating their homes for the joyous celebration of Christmas. In almost every home there stands a beautiful glittering Christmas tree.

When my family celebrates Christmas at the cheerfully decorated home of my mom and dad, we gather around the glowing Christmas tree. Why do we include the Christmas tree as an important part of our Christmas cheer?

The focus on a green tree probably developed in medieval Germany. They decorated the evergreen "Paradise Tree" with red apples. The Christmas tree was introduced to the United States by German settlers in Pennsylvania. The dominate colors are green and red. Green represents the continuance of life through the long bleak winter. Red symbolizes the blood Jesus shed for our eternal life.

Without a doubt, the glowing Christmas tree, filled with colorful lights and ornaments, surrounded by gifts wrapped in bright paper and shiny ribbons, is part of the magic of this joyful season. I love the sights, sounds and story of Christmas. Lights blinking, bells ringing and voices singing fills the air with excitement. Christmas is a very special warm-hearted celebration. Loving, caring and sharing become the focal point in our lives. Wisper of secrets fill atmosphere. Stockings hung gay chimneys produce great anticipation.

The Christ Child's birth indeed gives each person love, hope and peace. I express my sincere wish for a blessed Holiday Season.

Lord, thank you coming to this earth to give life.

"In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth.'' Genesis 1:1 KJV

Do you remember Christmas Eve 1968 when the Apollo 8 Capsule orbited the moon? Astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell Jr. and William Anders sent holiday greetings from space to planet Earth. They read the first ten verses of the book of Genesis to the largest television audience in history to that date. These astronauts were given a rare vision of the vastness of the universe and omnipotence of God.

The fabulous Christmas season gives each of us the same vision given the astronauts. It expands our horizons and deepens our love. God is love. The atmosphere is thick with love during the Christmas season. Love clokes each of us like a soft, warm blanket. Love brings out the best in people. Love gives constructive energy, hope and zeal.

Have you ever seen more zealous people than at Christmas? Zeal has been described as excitement with power. Love, hope and zeal brings out the steel in our soul to make us strong to live this life victoriously. The challenge for uie "Lace Over Steel" woman of today is to keep the spirit of Christmas alive all year long.

As we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, our hearts are full of thanksgiving, joy and praise to Him, the Greatest Gift of all to us and the whole world.

May He bless you and your family this Christmas with joy unspeakable!

Dec. 27, 1988 - Ending 1988 with Joy! ©
by Shirley W. Mitchell, Lifestyles - Lace Over Steel™

"...in thy presence is fullness of joy..." Psalms 16:11 KJV

Let's face it, for the working woman things don't always work out the way we hope or plan. There is much pain in the fabric of life. But with God at the helm of our lives we are full of joy even in the cold winter weather or bad times.

Robert Louis Stevenson said, "The best things are nearest; breath in your nostrils, light in your eyes, flowers at your feet, duties at your hand, the path of right just before you." Robert Louis Stevenson gives the Lace Over Steel woman a clue to being joyful.

Someone told me, "a little joy goes a long way." I went into the grocery store to buy a bottle of Joy dishwashing detergent. When I walked inside, an employee asked, "May I help you?" "I came to pick up a bottle of Joy. "I responded. He smiled, "You look like you have plenty of joy." With a twinkle in my eyes, I grinned, "I am joyous today, but I need a bottle of Joy dishwashing detergent to wash my dishes." The young man joked back with me, "A little joy goes a long way."

Driving my car back to my home, with the yellow plastic bottle of Joy dishwashing detergent resting in the brown sack in the seat of my car, I thought about the statement, '"A little joy goes a long way." Thinking about the synonyms for joy, I began to understand why "a little joy goes a long way." Words like pleasure, happiness, transport, ecstasy, bliss, mirth, festivity, charm, delight, blessedness, gladness, elation, exultation, felicity, rapture, gaiety, merriment and hilarity give us a clue to the reason the oil of joy takes the friction out of life.

Indeed a little joy goes a long way. Joy is contagious. End 1988 with JOY!
