Jan. 6, 1994 - The Power Of Positive Thinking © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
"You do not need to be defeated by anything ... You can have peace of mind, improved health and a never-ceasing flow of energy... You can modify or change the circumstances in which you live, assuming control over them ... You will become more popular, esteemed and well-liked individual," from Norman Vincent Peale's book, "The Power of Positive Thinking."
Norman Vincent Peale died Christmas Eve, 1993, at age 95 more excited about life than when he was younger. Speaking at age 90, his enthusiasm was contagious.
As I watched him hold the audience in the palm of his hand with unequivocal attention, I was amazed. He was certainly a good role model for his book "Enthusiasm Makes the Difference." The message of the book, "Enthusiasm - The priceless quality that makes everything different" allows one to have zest-packed living.
He left us with 40 books, to remind us of his optimistic message of Christian hope and faith.
"Books are embalmed minds," from Christian Nes-tell Bovce.
President Clinton called Peale "an optimist, who believed that whatever the antagonisms and complexities of modern life brought us, that anyone could prevail by approaching life with a simple sense of faith," from USA TODAY.
Norman Vincent Peale made a difference in this world. The inner man and his ministry to people became greater as he grew older. Norman Vincent Peale grew older without getting old.
Wise old King Solomon said, "The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness." Proverbs 16:31.
The aging of a righteous person is honorable.
Henry David Thoreau said, "None are so old as those who have outlived enthusiasm."
Norman Vincent Peale certainly did not outlive his enthusiasm. His enthusiasm reached out and grabbed you when he was speaking from the pulpit of New York City's Marble Collegiate Church, through the microphone, by radio or television, or through his writing.
Two ways to be "Fabulous after 50" is to think positive and be enthusiastic!

Jan. 13, 1994 - The Age Of New Beginnings © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous After Fifty™
The half century birthday gives one the feeling of embarking on a special journey of new beginnings. To begin this journey we must go to the nucleus of our hearts and spirits to let the real person shine through. This calling of the "age wave" will be a constant source of replenishment of peace, if we allow our creator to be our compass to find our own guideposts of fulfillment.
If we listen with "laser-listening" our hearts will hear the sweet songs of September in our lives. Only then will we revel in the possibilities of aging. Nature puts on a dazzling tranquil show in the Sand Mountain, Alabama area, my home. God takes his brush and paints the landscape vibrant scarlet, deep purple, sunshine yellow, and glowing orange to make the landscape postcard beautiful. Just as the autumn of the year brings euphoric changes and excitement, so does the autumn of one's life.
Joseph E. Antonini, Chairman and CEO of Kmart told the 1993 Age Wave Summer Institute, "Life stage is more important than age!"
Maddy Kent Dychwald, Vice President of Age Wave Inc. believes 50-years-old is the best age. She expressed emphatically, "It's the time you've been striving for all your life."
Empty nest, maybe a second career you enjoy, grandparenting and more leisure time adds pizzazz to life. During the "fall of the year and the fall of one's life," one begins to feel a certain amount of exhilaration and excitement. Many empty nesters have more money to spend, more time to travel and be romantic and motivation to feel good, look good, renovate and redecorate. The empty nesters say, "It's our time to fly! " I'm inviting you to get excited about being strong enough to have lived 50 or more years of live. Congratulations! You have survived the tides of disease and accidents.
Elizabeth Dole, our National Red Cross President, living past the big 50 birthday, confided to Carey Kinsolving of the Religious News Service, that "Christianity is more than faith, more than believing, more than trying to have a mission field. The essence of it is having that personal relationship with the Lord."
The secret of being fabulous after 50 is to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ!

Jan. 20, 1994 - Now Possible To Interchange Lifestage For Age © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
The word de-age was used by Frances Lear at the Age Wave Institute. At 70 years of age, Lear is a successful entrepreneur.
De-age concept, sees people over 50 years as they really are - vital, vigorous, intelligent, attractive people with an active interest in life. This concept is coming out of the cyclic lifestyle of the older and grayer generation. Many people start new careers at the age of 70. It is not uncommon for the new elders to fall in love at the age of 60. A large group of older people go back to school at 40 and 50 years. We are interchanging lifestage for age.
The past generations in America have protrayed the over 50 Americans as frail, frugal and winding down their lives. Attitudes are changing as modern mature people become more vigorous and economically powerful. People standing in the door of the burgeoning mature population are experiencing a unique moment in history. As the baby boomers migrate up the lifeline, our society will turn their attention from youth to the vigorous, powerful older generation, numbering over 140 million.
At the threshold of 1994 the average live expecancy in America is 75 years. The senior group that will have the ability to experience their mature life to the fullest are the Christians filled with the Holy Spirit. Jesus told his disciples (John 14) that he would leave them, but he would give them the Holy Spirit
"But the Comforter which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my xame, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you." (verse 26)
The Holy Spirit is silent, invisible, but real. He enters your life when you receive Christ into your life by faith. Jesus said the Holy Spirit is the Comforter. He loves you. He will encourage you through your mind and heart. He is like another Jesus living inside you. He will help you have wisdom in facing your problems. The Holy Spirit is the Divine Tutor. If you will listen, He will teach you! He will guide you into successful aging.
Being filled with the Holy Spirit is a plus in being Fabulous After 50!

Jan. 27, 1994 - Book Gives Advice For Staying Active © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
Periodically, I will review for my readers a book that has given me a positive attitude about aging.
"Dr. Walter M. Bortz II, M.D., one of America's most respected authorities on aging, explores the capabilities of the human mind and body to continue an independent, energetic existence for one million hours," in his book, "We Live Too Short And Die Too Long." It is Bortz's best estimate that our biogenetic maximum life span is 120 years - approximately 1 million hours."
Of course we aren't to this Utopia at this point. Today the average life of Americans is 75 years. However in his book, Bortz gives substantial evidence that our bodies have the capability to live longer. Let me whet your appetite for this book by listing the twelve chapter titles. 1. One Million Hours 2. Why Things Grow Old 3. The Failure of Medicine 4. Prevention's Problems 5. Aging Is A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy 6. Use It or Lose It 7. Snow On The Roof, Fire in the Furance 8. New Tricks and Old Dogs 9. What Man Lives By: Exercise, Diet and Sleep 10. Self-Efficacy 11. The Last Passage 12. The Greening of Graying
Bortz gives eight steps to successful aging.
1. "Do at least 30 minutes of sustained, rhythmic, vigorous exercise four times a week. Seek out patterns, times, places and contacts that make exercise as much a part of your day as eating and sleeping. 2. "Eat like a bushman. Return to the habit of eating what nature first laid on our tables: fruits, whole grains, vegetables and lean meat. 3. "Get as much sleep and rest as you need. Make quiet time a major priority. Exercisers, in particular, must acknowledge that their bodies require respite from workouts and the general clamor of the day. 4. "Maintain your sense of humor and deflect anger. Make each day an opportunity for optimism for yourself and others. A positive mindset creates the expectation that something good is about to happen and opens the door to new options for success. 5. "Set goals and accept challenges that force you to be as alive and creative as possible. Nature operates in such a way that growth and living are nearly synonymous. When one stops, so does the other. Creativity is not confined to the first part of your life. In fact, accumulated knowledge and experience should make the later decades even more congenial to new accomplishment. 6. "Don't depend on anyone else for your well-being. A well-developed sense of self efficacy is the crucial link to a long and meaningful existence. We all need to maintain mastery, autonomy and independence in our daily lives. 7. "Be necessary and responsible. Live outside yourself. Beyond independence, we also need to see each day as a chance to help someone or something. Associate with other active, involved individuals. Sharpen your sense of duty of the earth, which nurses us all. 8. "Don't slow down. Stick with the mainstream. Avoid "the shadows. Stay together. Universal law dictates that natural order is ordained by only one mechanism - a well-directed, purposeful flow of energy. Aging need not be characterized by loss. Maintaining your energy flow is the antitdote."

Feb. 3, 1994 - Lessons To Be Learned From Super Bowl Players © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
Chatting about this column with a lawyer from Dallas, Texas, seated next to me at the Super Bowl, he said to me, "the same excellence and motivation that brought these two teams to the top could apply to aging."
As we watched running back Emmitt Smith, No. 22 plow through the defensive line time after time, it was evident he was in to physical form. His hard work and total fitness program empowered him with great strength. Like Smith, the aging person would be empowered to enjoy a longer, better quality of life through hard work, while implementing a total fitness program of daily exercise, nutritious food and positiive attitude.
While the two top football pro teams in the nation, the Dallas Cowboys and the Buffalo Bills, battled on the playing field, my new friend from Texas made the statement, "These teams think they are winners. More aging people would be winners if they thought they were winners." Your mind set about aging is important. The rich conversation with a Texan who was well informed about the winner of the Super Bowl, made the first half of the ball game pass quickly.
As both teams rushed off the field to the locker rooms, my new friend explained to me that coach Jimmy Johnson knew how to motivate his team. He revealed to me that he expected the Cowboys to play much more exciting football in the last half. "The last half of life can also be played more exciting if older people are properly motivated to live their best and be their best," he encouraged.
The spectacular half time show rocked the Georgia Dome. When Naomi Judd joined her daughter, Wynonna on stage for the first live performance since 1991 to sing the last song "Love Can Build a Bridge," the dome lights were darkened and over 75,000 fans turned on the flashlight provided. The words "Love Can Build a Bridge" filled the dome like dense fog, while 75,000 points of light nickered and 2,000 Atlanta performers filled the football field.
The magic of love touched me along with 75,000 other people enjoying this rich spiritual experience.
"... put on love, which is the bond of perfectness." (1 Timothy 6:11)
To play in the "Super Bowl of life" the "Fabulous after 50" must strive for personal excellence for superior living wrapped in the magic of love.

Feb. 10, 1994 - Humor And Faith Adds Fun To Growing Older © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
The fountain of aging is overflowing with savvy, well-educated, fulfilled Christian people. This gray haired power group is cutting loose, having fun, spending time doing things they enjoy.
The intoxicating joy of the positive power of Jesus Christ will lavish a youthful dew over aging. Through the wisdom of the Holy Spirit, this successful aging group realizes that the Family is God's masterpiece. From the vantage point of a half century, strengthening family ties and building strong relationships are of utmost imortance.
God takes center stage! With God center stage is our lives, we have the security to poke fun at aging. As did Dr. Penne Laubenthal in her poem "Mid-Life Crisis."
Laubenthal teaches a course in bibliotherapy, "Literature: The Healing Art" at Athens State College. Her class studies the methodology and research appropriate literature applying their learning by reading, writing and sharing.
Living, dying, coping with change - these are the challenges of human existence, and these are very serious subjects indeed. But in bibliotherapy class they also experienced the healing power of honest laughter and learn about the value of humor in restoring balance and perspective to our lives. They laughed at stories, at each other and at themselves.
Laubenthal brought to class "Mirror Mirror: The Terror of Not Being Young" by Elissa Melamed, a psy-

Feb. 17, 1994 - Focus On The Lord In Hard Times © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
From the vantage point of 50 years of life, the 50-something person has experienced hard times as well as good times. In the Bible, Malachi reminds us that (God) ... "shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and He shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness." Malachi 3:3 KJV
Mary M. Long, from Chattanooga, Tenn. wrote the poem "Focus On The Lord" during one of the refining periods of her life. She would like to share it with those of you who are feeling overwhelmed today.
Focus On The Lord...
When you, awake in the morning, And your heart is full of fear, Focus on the Lord, Because, He is very near.
When your thoughts run wild, with doubt and despair, Focus on God's Word. The scriptures tells you, he's always there.
As the darkness goes on and on, And you can't see the light, Focus on God's Grace, It will keep you through the night.
When you are very, very, weary, And feel all hope is gone. Focus on God's Mercy. He will heal you and make you strong.
When things are overwhelming, And you are at the end of your rope. Focus on God completely, And He will grant you hope.
Just keep your eyes focused, on the Savior above. Let Him hold you in his hands, And surround you with His love.

Feb. 24, 1994 - Seven Secrets To Successful Aging © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
The '90s is the right time for the golden opportunity to be 50-something and beyond. Every person has the desire to be fabulous after 50. Age may become a building dance of intrigue and new horizons. An exciting life, spiritual growth, vitality and productivity is an attitude, not age. The ageless person makes the top of life an unforgettable vibrant note with these seven secrets of successful aging as a mind set.
1. Establish in your mind our own perfect aging set point. How old do you think you are? It happens between our ears. Faith Popcorn, founder and chairperson of Brain Reserve Inc., a market-forecasting firm, has coined a new phrase, "Down-Aging." The down-aging phenomenon is the "refusal to be bound by traditional age limitations." This marketer and trend forecaster is finding in her extensive research, some people who are 50 years of age, are acting and looking like 40 years young. Many people at 65 are beginning a second half of life that is more exciting than the first. Our society is moving from age to life stage. The way you feel, look and enjoy each day is more important than actual years lived.
2. Be appreciative of your 50 years of experience. The results of the age wave, age-age and the process of down-aging stimulate the over 50 crowd to a state of motivating sense of anticipation. The eager elders will explore new opportunities in the coming decades. Positive social changes for older people will give new zip, zeal and enthusiasm in response to our new life. Instead of becoming old, worn out, depressed and ready to retire from life. Older Americans will break free to a new dimension of life.
3. Know the value of being God's child. Spiritual growth isn't over until it's over. God wants you to be alive, significant, unleashed and fulfilled. Cheryl Russell, author of "100 Predictions for the Baby Boom the Next 50 Years," reveals the middle-age boomers are discovering faith in Christ. A personal relationship with Jesus Christ makes life richer at any age.
4. Practice personal excellence for superior living. Exercise is the golden egg of aging. Dr. Walter M. Bortz II, in his book "We Live Too Short and Die Too Long," says "exercise extends not only your life, but it's quality as well." Paramount to fitness is a balanced diet. Nutritionist Pam Smith, author of "The Food Trap," gave me permission to print her own Ten Commandments of Great Nutrition. I. Thou shalt never skip breakfast. II. Thou shalt eat every 3 to 4 hours. III. Thou shalt always eat a carbohydrate with a protein. IV. Thou shalt double your fiber. V. Thou shalt trim the fat from your diet. VI. Thou shalt believe your mother was right; eat your fruits and vegetables. VII. Thou shalt get your vitamins and minerals from food, not pills. VIII. Thou shalt drink at least eight glasses of water a day. IX. Thou shalt consume a minimum of sugar, salt, caffeine and alcohol. X. Thou shalt never, never go on a fad diet. The ageless person needs a proper diet of natural food and spiritual food. Along with proper exercise and diet, sleep is important to your good life. Sleep gives the body needed time to regenerate and rejuvenate Your body is a marvelous machine. Keep it fit growing mentally and spiritually. Keep moving.
5. Be spiffy at 50 and over. Looking your best is fun for the pace setting person who makes life an adventure. Uncork the magic of self-confidence with your total appearance, your body language and your expertise. "And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our bands upon us; ..." Psalms 90:17 KJV. Perception is reality. Personality and appearance is important. How we feel about ovneives is paramount to good mental health. A positive response from others builds our self-esteem. Yes, being spiffy at 50 is high on the priority list of the vanguard new senior citizen.
6. Make each day a pearl. Drop the baggage of yesterday. Do not pick up the burden for tomorrow. At the end of your life you will have a string of pearls.
7. Have a passion for eternity. The hope of heaven is therapeutic as we travel life's road. Heaven is "a city whose builder and maker is God.
"Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. "In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were no so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. "And if I go prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye will be also." John 14:1-3
A positive on-going approach to aging during the age-age creates an indisputable sense of anticipation for the ageless person.

Mar. 3, 1994 - Each Moment Can Be Great And Special © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
The marriage of experience and maturity should lead to an enriched life.
Wise old King Solomon said, "Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth." Proverbs 27:1 NIV
One never deals with anything but the moment. The past is gone. The future is uncertain. But, each of us can concentrate upon the moment to fill it with greatness. That is precisely what Lloyd Darnell, my fellow toastmaster, did one January morning during his quiet time. While meditating about life, he wrote this poem.
Life... I sat upon a hilltop, In the quiet morning hue, Considering life's complexities, So many - yet so few.
For what is man's great destiny? For what is it that we yearn? Can it be that mortal man, Has many things to learn?
The sun springs from the mountain. The grass is wet with dew. I look above and see the sky, A beautiful azure blue.
This is life if we can know it. This is the way to go. We need to know the meaning, As life goes to and fro.
Onward to our destiny, Onward to our dreams, Dispel the old anxieties, As sunlight brightly streams.
Throughout our life with others, With whom we go forth each day, With cares and woes all packaged up, And not put on display.
Forget all adversities, And reach out for God's Love. Establish new priorities, As we scan the skies above.
Potential is within us, But never lose the sight, Of God's helping hand before us, To guide us to the height, Of Love and understanding .
To everyone we meet. Life is ours. God made it so. There's nothing else so sweet.

Mar. 10, 1994 - 'Just For Today' List Will Help With Aging © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
Ladies Home Journal quoted 62-year-old Elizabeth Taylor giving advice about life, "Go out there and embrace life. Swallow it, relish it, live it."
Seven ways to embrace, swallow, relish, and live life are: 1. Just for today - I will love the Lord, my God, with all my heart, with all my soul, with all my mind, and my neighbor as myself, 2. Just for today - I will taste happiness. Abraham Lincoln once said that folks are just as happy as they make up their minds to be. Happiness Is not a matter of externals, It comes from within. 3. Just for today - I will keep my body totally fit. I will exercise, eat properly and get enough rest. I will not let my heart be troubled. I will reduce stress. 4. Just for today - I will have a quiet time with my creator. I will meditate on God's Holy word, pray and listen. I will grow spiritually as I read material that will expand my mind and soul. 5. Just for today - I will be enthusastic and have a positive attitude. I am not a victim of aging. I will turn my 50 years of experience and maturity into a slow dance of enjoyment and fulfillment. 6. Just for today - I'll move my life In the direction the Holy Spirit leads, by making plans and following plans. 7. Just for today - I will be good to myself, building high self-esteem; consequently high self-worth will empower me to encourage others. Every person seeks for high self worth, because we are made in the image of God.

Mar. 17, 1994 - Shamrock Used To Represent Trinity © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous After Fifty™
Are you wearing green today? Do you know why? Americans started celebrating St. Patrick's Day in the year 1845 to honor the patron saint of Ireland. One of the legends is that he used the shamrock to illustrate the idea of the Holy Trinity.
The Holy Trinity is God three in one, 1. God the Father, 2. God the Son, 3. God the Holy Ghost. The Holy Trinity is the fullness of life for the Fabulous after 50. The Holy Trinity makes intimacy with God possible. We have the precious privilege to go into the very presence of our Abba Father, the creator and controller of the universe, through the door of Jesus Christ.
Before Jesus ascended into Heaven to sit at the right hand of the Heavenly Father, He said, "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you... " Acts 1: 8 KJV
The Holy Trinity is the miracle in the life of the aging person. The March winds will blow moving the leaves back and forth; and the winds of God's Holy Spirit will move into our aging lives directing our paths. When I think about the turbulence of the March wind, I am reminded of the sometimes turbulent life of an aging person. The storm-winds of aging can make us fly higher if we head into the wind with the miracle of the Holy Trinity.
Have you ever flown a kite? The kite rises against the wind. An over 50 person has never advanced life and flown higher in a dead calm. Thank God for storm winds of life that keep us pressing onward and looking up to Him. The fabulous after person will learn to head into the wind with sheer delight because in the time of stress and strain we get revelation of God.
Hard times drive each of us to God. They make us desperately aware of our humaness and our own helplessness. Human tragedy, cold with hopelessness and moist with tears brings us into the supernatural reign of a higher power.
This St. Patrick's Day as you head into the storm winds of aging, fly higher!

Mar. 24, 1994 - Faith Is The Water In Fountain Of Youth © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous After Fifty™
"What is faith?
It is the confident assurance that something we want is going to happen. It is the certainty that what we hope for is waiting for us, even though we cannot see it up ahead. Men of God in days of old were famous for their faith." Hebrews 11: 1-2 Living Bible
Dr. Thomas S. Haggai, inspired me when I heard him speak on faith. He gave the definition of an atheist - "a person dressed up with nowhere to go."
God gave us faith for our own sake. He gave us hope of abundant life on earth and assurance of eternal life in heaven.
Haggai gave three qualities of faith. 1. "Faith gives you uncommon insights. God has given us ourselves. It's important for us to make ourselves better so we can be our best. Faith makes us comfortable with ourselves. Faith makes us sensitive to other people." 2. "Faith gives you uncommon courage." Paul encourages us in Romans 8: 31, "... If God be for us, who can be against us?" 3. "Faith is uncommon forgiveness." Holding a grudge is a constant boomerang. There is no burden heavier than a grudge; therefore God's way is to forgive a person the moment of the act not after they have asked for forgiveness.
Faith is the water in the fountain of youth.

Mar. 31, 1994 - Visit To Holy Land Special For Columnist © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous After Fifty™
"The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing birds is come, ..." Song of Solomon 2:12 KJV
"The flowers appear on the earth" has a new meaning to me this week.
Last week I enjoyed the unique opportunity to walk among the absolutely gorgeous wild flowers in the Holy Land where Jesus walked, two thousand years ago, feeing the power of His presence the first day of spring. My brilliant red tulips were Greeting me when I walked up the front walk to my home in Albertville, after returning from the Holy Land.
Indeed spring is here, and God's new life and flowers covers the earth. Embracing the grandeur of God's land of "milk and honey" during the spring season, I tuned my ears to the birds singing as I prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, soaking in the warmth of the sun, the fragrance of the garden and the power of prayer in this place.
The Holy Land is 1/5 the size of the state of Tennessee, yet all history radiates from this land. God is good at taking small things and making them great. He can do a lot with a little. He can take an aging person and make your life greater than you have ever dreamed. Even the Dead Sea at the bottom of the earth sings a song of life. Watching the sun rise over the salt dunes, the birds were singing a magnificent melody of life. The palm trees were waving good morning to the sun. The sun greets the palm trees with the hope that life has just begun.
The bright red flowers get into the act, waving up and down in the salty air, saying yes, yes, to life. The reflection of the rising sun on the Dead Sea, screams life! The resurrection of Jesus Christ screams life. He is the "day star" of our hearts. II Peter 1:19 KJV

Apr. 14, 1994 - Zeal For Life Takes Away The Years © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
Zeal for life is the beginning of true beauty. Life is no spectator sport. You must jump into each day with gusto, making your life exciting and full. The zeal of the 1990's is portrayed by the beautiful women who can brag about being over 50.
Gloria Locke will admit her age because, "older is better." Gloria is a gorgeous woman, who shows Tennessee Walking Horses in great style. I asked this successful businesswoman, who plays tennis, takes dancing lessons and teaches handicapped children to ride horses, "How do you stay so young?" Gloria threw back her stylish head and gave me a million dollar smile. "I like myself and I don't want to look old. So I work at being the best that I can be." Another thing she acknowledged, "I stay active. I'm always doing something. With my passion for life, I can do more than 5 ordinary people.'' She continued, "You know I married an older husband. That makes me feel younger!" "If my husband wants to take me out, I say, 'I'll be fresh as a flower in an hour." Beautiful Gloria Locke is one woman this author expects to live 120 years.
Dr. Walter M. Bortz II, M.D., states in his new book, We Live Too Short and Die Too Long, that the human body is created to last 120 years or one million hours.
The Bible tells us that Jesus was "clad with zeal as a cloak." Isaiah 59:17 KJV. What is zeal? Webster's New World Dictionary gives the definition, "intense enthusiasm."
Crowds flocked around Jesus because of his great charisma and enthusiasm If you have any intention of being "Fabulous after 50" you must follow the footprints of Jesus. As you fall in love with Jesus, you will have a strong desire to spend time with Him, become intimate with Him, and get to know Him. Put Jesus center stage your life. He is light! He will illuminate your stage. Knowing God through daily quiet time with Him will empower you to sail in the future with confidence.
"And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us...."Psalm 90:17 KJV.

Watching the beautiful, multicolored monarch butterfly flit from one flower to the other, my spirit became weightless. The soundless and unhurried movements of God's gorgeous creature gave the garden a sense of relaxation and timelessness. The dappled sunlight danced on the fragile wings of my inspiration.
My thoughts were caught up in the metamorphosis of this beautiful creature from a cocoon, to a large swollen body with tiny shriveled wings, and finally an exquisite mature butterfly.
We could parallel the Christian life with the life of a butterfly. The cocoon stage is when we are born again and Christ wraps us in His blanket of love. Then we become hungry for His Word and begin to study the Bible, communicate with Him through prayer and begin to grow, spiritually. Through the struggle and pain of growth, in His perfection and in His timing, we become mature Christians and beautiful like a monarch butterfly. Mature Christians, like a butterfly, shed multicolored beams of God's love.
"And let the beauty the Lord our God be upon us..." Psalms 90:17 KJV
How does a mature person become a mature Christian, shedding multicolored beams of God's love to the world? How do we let the beauty of God rest upon us?
"Come near to God and He will .come near to you..." James 4:8 NIV

Apr. 28, 1994 - Fly Above Storms Of Life Like The Eagle © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
God can use the analogies of the eagle to lift you up from the discouragement of getting older! God often uses the things of nature to teach His Children about Himself and the universe. God used the eagle, "King of Birds," to teach us about strength, beauty, and freedom.
Exodus 19:4, God compares the eagle with Himself. "You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to Myself."
Strength - The eagle is a finicky eater. He searches for the fish, lamb, squirrel, etc. that he wants to eat. He then kills his prey with his strong talons (claws). He flies high to his nest and eats his food while it is still warm. One of the characteristics of strength is a proper diet. The eagle aging person needs a proper diet of natural food and spiritual food. To be strong in our later years, we must eat a proper diet, and feed our souls on God's Word daily. The enormous strength of an eagle gives him the ability to fly above the storms. The eagle can see the storm approaching because his eyesight is eight times more powerful than humans. God has equipped the eagle with an infallible sense of direction. The aging Christian person enjoys a God given spiritual insight and His wisdom to see, storms of life approaching. The eagle sits patiently, unafraid as the great storm approaches. When the winds begin to howl and the rain begins to fall, the eagle launches flight from his nest high on a cliff. He will spread his majestic six to ten feet wing span, lock his wings into ascending position, and fly into the storm, using the strong winds, as he flies round and round until he flies up over the storm. As the warm sunshine baths him, he looks down upon the storm.
My prayer for my readers is that you will always have the strength of God to fly above the storms of life and fly in sunshine. The storm winds of life can make us fly higher if we head into the wind. Have you ever flown a kite? The kite rises against the wind. Thank God for the storm winds of life that keep us pressing onward and upward to Him.
God's mercy is concealed within every storm cloud. His grace flows beneath every cross-current. As the winds of adversity blows high, God will strengthen the spiritual fiber of His Children. Human tragedy, cold with hopelessness and moist with tears bring us into the supernatural reign of God.
Beauty - The word used to describe the beauty of the eagle is majestic.
Kenneth Price, in his book "The Eagle Christian," has a excellent definition of "The Majestic Eagle."
"Majesty is defined as the greatness and dignity of a sovereign and his grandeur. It is not a term that is used loosely with things of beauty, wealth, or strength, but is reserved only for those who possess all these things and more. The eagle, in flight, is all these things. His mastery of the awesome force of the wind, his beauty in flight, his strength in battle, his compassion for the young and his all-encompassing eyesight are but a shadow of God."
To be "Fabulous after 50," you must be more than beautiful, you must be Majestic, through the positive power of Jesus Christ!
Freedom - Back through the pages of history, the eagle has been a symbol of freedom. The bald eagle is the picture on the Great Seal of the United States of America, the land of the free.
The "Fabulous after 50" person will feel the freedom, strength and confidence of the eagle as she allows the spirit of the Lord Jesus to be the center of her being.
"For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death." Romans 8:2 KJV
"Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." II Corinthians 3:17 KJV

May 5, 1994 - Now Is The Time To Stay Lean © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous After Fifty™
Aging during the "Age-Wave" is a High Sea Adventure! According to Ken Dychtwald, author of "Age Wave," the largest segment of our society will be over 50 years of age by 1996, when the leading edge of the baby boomers reach 50.
Youthfulness and vigor will characterize the "Middle-Age Mass" of the '90's! A "fit" body cannot be bought! It takes knowledge of nutrition, exercise, discipline, time, and hard work. If this author could market a "fit" body for "X" number of dollars, I would be a rich woman. However, since I can't sell you a "fit" body, I , will give you some helpful hints on "Personal Excellence" that will empower you to live a full life.
Growing older without getting old can be attained through a positive attitude, a youthful, healthy lifestyle, and working hard toward a goal of personal excellence. I'm inviting you to get excited about being strong enough to have lived fifty or more years of life. Congratulations! You have survived the tides of disease and accidents. The "Win-Win Age-Wave," gives opportunity for the feeling of invincibility. With the proper exercise plan, diet, and positive attitude, the aging generation can retard or repel the ravages of disease, aging, gravity and stay healthy and firm.
Exercise is the golden egg of aging! The best exercise is the one that You Will Do! The desired result being, better health, more strength, stamina, power and energy in minimum time. Will we take our golden opportunity?
This is the decade of instant oatmeal, quickie divorces, microwave ovens, fax machines and computers; therefore, many people over 50 are having a hard time being disciplined when it comes to exercising.
USA TODAY in an article by Mike Snider, "U.S. tends to take it easy on exercise," says "If the USA got a grade for exercise, it probably would be 'D' for darned little." Data from the Centers for Disease Control, Atlanta, shows only 16 percent of women 65 or older exercised regularly in 1990. However, fit bodies only come from a workable plan, discipline and hard work.
It is your responsibility to determine your best exercise program to live your own personal lifestyle to the maximum. Exercise will put a smile on your face and an excitement in your walk no matter what your age. The market is flooded with possibilities for "fitness." It's up to you, how and when you exercise. Many doctors recommend walking as one of the best ways to exercise. Walking only costs you time and effort.
Catch the passion for the golden egg of exercise as I tell you some of its benefits.
1. Increased Energy - A high energy person who feels life to the end of the fingertips is engagingly energetic. Exercise demands this marvelous machine to work harder. The heart beats faster, lungs stretch, blood vessels dilate, you sweat, energy fuels mobilize, and blood flows more freely. You Are Energized! Energy is the power surge that gives the older person pizzazz. Energy breeds energy! 2. Cardiovascular Conditioning - The big pump that keeps today's smart mature people moving is strengthened by exercise. A half hour of exercise at a consistent intensity three times a week is ideal for cardiovascular conditioning. A "fit" heart will transport oxygen with greater efficiency to all parts of the body. A healthy heart gives the body more stamina as it maximizes nutrient supply. 3. Higher Metabolism - Exercise, being the latest anti-aging breakthrough, motivates the over 50 crowd to burn fat faster and look fit from head to toe. 4. Increases Brain Function - Dr. Walter M. Bortz II, MD, one of America's most respected and acclaimed authorities on aging believes exercise improves the circulation to the brain which stimulates the formation and release of noradrenaline. When the brain is bathed with high levels of noradrenaline nerve growth is stimulated. The way to keep sharp is to keep active mentally and physically. 5. Stress Buster - Stress affects people in different ways. Common denominators in most people who an severely stressed out are panic and a feeling that their lives are out of control. Some of the symptoms are knotted stomach, head ache, pounding heart, inability to concentrate, nervous gestures, and insomnia. The habit "worry-hurry" will lead to stress. Stress is the road to pain. Exercise is a good "Stress Buster"! It re-energizes the body, mind and spirit. Exercise is a source of relaxation and renewal. Jesus is also an excellen "Stress Buster." He said, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give your rest." "Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls." "For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." St. Matthew 11: 28-30 KJV 6. Toned Bodies - Time and tone can fuse to create an appealing older person. Fifty and beyond is "Prime Time" to fight the loss of elasticity in muscles with exercise. Mainteance is the key! Exercising your body will create a new sense of fluidity and movement. 7. Summary of Positive Effects of Exercise - Dr. Bortz in his book "We Live Too Short And Die Too Long,'' gives a list of the credits which exercise exhibits in the human body - "Body weight, blood pressure, HDL cholesterol (the beneficial kind), blood clotting, respiratory function, heart muscle strength, muscle mass, bone density, obesity, intestinal function, sexual capacity, glucose tolerance, immunologic capacity, and behaviorial characteristics such as cognition and memory."
The years after 50 are not years to relax and retire from life.I suggest we throw retirement out of our vocabulary! Exchange "oldtimer" to older and better. Forget about being on your last legs and run forward to your golden years. Exercise until you change creaky to flexible. Now is the time to stay lean and active! Do not allow age to cool or dwindle you! Respark and rekindle your life with daily exercise. You Can Do It!
Exercise makes the most of your best! Keep Moving! Exercise - the golden egg of aging is available to all! Reach out and take it!

May 12, 1994 - Stay Young, Excited By Looking Forward © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
She portrayed perfect balance and control as she thrilled the audience with her blue ribbon ride. With Betty Robins in the irons, the former World Champion Walking Horse, "Valid Consent," made another victory ride.
After she showed her horse, the power surge of adrenalin, excitement of the show, and the thrill of winning, gave Betty a glow of youth dew when she came to join us in the box seats around the horse show arena. Enjoying the euphoric feeling, I congratulated her on her excellent ride. "What is your secret for staying young, excited about life and full of energy?" I queried. The smiling face she had earned through many years of smiling, easily formed into a gleeful grin. Her eyes sparkled. "I always have something to look forward to." She informed me. "I look forward to showing Tennessee Walking Horses; writing books; designing furniture for a Chinese Furniture Company, and spending time with my husband, Howard."
My friend Betty is a good example of a high energy level and love for life during the mature years. Energy breeds energy! Attention! An anti-aging breakthrough! Energy is the power surge that keeps the upthrust of the "Age Wave" moving forward. ("Age phrase, coined book Age Wave.)
Norman Vincent Peale believed the Bible is the Book of Energy! Christians that walk in the Spirit of God are putting themselves into God's Power Surge - that life force that is built into the universe. The Bible is indeed a map for health of the body, soul and spirit.
III John 2 - "Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth."KJV
Looking at that priceless more, we realize that a few basic steps will renew our energy.
(1) Good Health is the trump card of aging and energy! (2) Exercise is the golden egg of aging! So, Keep Moving! (3) Enthusiasm captures the energy and excitement of life. (4) Self-efficacy is the energizing power to stay in control of your life, with Jesus on the throne.
Energy and strength intertwine into a rope of hope for the "Fabulous after 50." God compares that energy and strength with the eagle, the "King of Birds," an ageless symbol of strength.
"But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; faint." Isaiah 40:31 KJV

May 19, 1994 - New Type Of Grapefruit Shows Insight To Beauty © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
"Homli" read the sign at the produce counter. "My dad is King orange, and my mom is Duncan grapefruit. Gosh I'm 'Homli'." Laughing, I joked with the produce manager, "That is a good name for those ugly deformed grapefruit." "Take one home and try it," he encouraged me. "Homli has a unique taste. It is a cross between a grapefruit and orange. You will like it," the manager said. The produce manager was right! The beauty of that grapefruit was on the inside. This is true of many people I meet.
Corrie ten Boom, survivor of the Nazi concentration camp, was not packaged like a movie star; however, when I read her book, "The Hiding Place," the beauty of her soul shined through like a sparkling jewel. Like the new produce "Homli," looking at Corrie ten Boom from the outside did not give a clue to the richness of the inside.
"Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised." Proverbs 31:30 KJV
Jeannie Williams, columnist for USA Today, said, "The voice for the 21st century could well be that of Peggy Noonan, whose wise new book, 'Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness* is out..."
Noonan, Reagan's speechwriter, has gone back to her Bible. In her book, she gives optimistic advice, " '...give your love and know your God and do your work, and be good to your troupe,' all those people who give your life meaning."
Following Peggy Noonan's advice will move our beauty to the inside as our life becomes more meaningful. Feeling good about our ageless life, we realize that dreams do not turn gray. We know the soul grows fat while the body where we live may have a few aches, pains and wrinkles. Age cuts beauty into life with light and shadow, like a rare collectable jewel.
As I was listening to my car radio, I heard a song which said, "I'm just an old chunk of coal, but I am going to be a diamond someday." Are you sparkling today, or has satan dulled your luster with fear of aging? Age can grind you or shine you.

Jun. 2, 1994 - Jackie 0.: Role Model For Aging Women © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
"The grave was never intended for the spirit - only for the body."
With this truth in mind, I experienced joy knowing that Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Camelot's Lady Quinevere, had gone to be with him in heaven.
However, I cried at her funeral. She had been my role model during the time she portrayed glamour, dignity, and courage as "First Lady of the United States." Through all the years that followed, the news media kept the public informed about our first lady of courage. When she died at age 64, I felt like I knew her personally.
When the person who knew her best, her son, John F. Kennedy Jr., gave three statements that captured the essence of her life, I knew we lived on common ground. At the funeral of his mother, John F. Kennedy Jr. said of her, "Love of words; bonds of home and family; and the spirit of adventure were the essence of her life."
President Clinton gave a graveside eulogy. He said, "She taught us by example about the beauty of art, the meaning of culture, the lessons of history, the power of personal courage, the nobility of public service, and most of all, the sanctity of family." Jackie was extremely family oriented. She once said, "If you bungle raising your children, little else matters in life."
Sen. Edward Kennedy paid this great lady of strength and dignity a high compliment in his eulogy when he said, "Her two children turned out to be extraordinary, honest, unspoiled and with a character equal to hers. And she did it in the most trying of circumstances. They are her two miracle. Her love for Caroline and John was deep and unqualified. She reveled in their accomplishments, she hurt with their sorrows, and felt sheer joy and delight in spending time with them. At the mere mention of one of their names, Jackie's eyes would shine brighter and her smile would grow bigger."
Thirty one years ago, my husband and I sat in our livng room with our three-year-old daughter, Karen, and our one-year-old son, David, and watched Jacqueline Kennedy, bravely hold the hands of her preschool children, John Jr. and Caroline while their father and our President was buried. We felt then the words of Sen. Edward Kennedy's eulogy at Jacqueline's funeral, "...during the four endless days in 1963, she held us together as a family and a country. In large part because of her, we could grieve and then go on. She lifted us up, and in the doubt and darkness, she gave her fellow citizens back their pride as Americans. She was then only 34 years old."
Today, scanning the newspapers reporting her death and burial, I picked up words describing her - intelligence, simple elegance, grace, glamour, dignity, courage, calm power, doting mother, adoring grandmother, global charmer, accomplished horsewoman, jet-setter, professional editor, and graceful recluse. Her close friend, Tempelsman said of Jackie, "Her life was filled with adventure and wisdom, laughter and love, gallantry and grace."
President Clinton said farewell to a first lady at Arlington Cemetery with the statement, "God gave her very great gifts and imposed upon her great burdens. She bore them all with dignity and grace and uncommon common sense." "May the flame she lit, so long ago, burn ever brighter here and always brighter in our hearts."
As we reflect on the life of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, 1929-94, we realize she is the epitome of the ageless woman, of strength and style. I stand a little taller today as I draw inspiration from her life. Her spirit will always dwell with us; because "the grave was not intended for the spirit."

Jun. 9, 1994 - Seven Stress Busters To Defuse Stress © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
Stress effects people in different ways. A common denominator in most people who are severely stressed out is panic and a feeling that their lives are out of control. Some of the symptoms are knotted stomach, head ache, pounding heart, inability to concentrate, nervous gestures, and insomnia. The habit "worry-hurry" will lead to stress. Stress is the road to pain.
• 1. EXERCISE is a good "stress-buster." It reenergizes the body, mind and spirit. A businessman walks two miles at 5:30 each morning. This habit gives him more exercise and a chance to think in low-pressure surroundings. Exercise gives you increased energy, cardiovascular conditioning, higher metabolism, increased brain function, and a toned body. • 2. PRIVACY AND BATH is the number one favorite "stress buster." A long leisurely bubble bath behind closed doors is mood-changing. Time to calm down and think, relax in the water, bath oil, perfumed soaps, wash away the cares of the day and lift your spirits. • 3. LAUGH AND LIVE life to the fullest. Laughter allows the steam to escape from out of the pressure cooker. Wise old Soloman said, "A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones." (Proverbs 17:22 NIV) Laugh, your life may depend on it. • 4. LIVE LIFE IN THE NOW. If you focus on the thing that is important to you, now, life will not pull you in a million directions. You only have the responsibilty to deal with the moment. Make that moment great! • 5. MEDITATE INSTEAD OF MEDICATE. Keeping your mind calm and focused on your creator will give you strength and desire to enjoy life. He created you and has unconditional love for you. • 6. TASTE HAPPINESS. Abraham Lincoln once said, "folks are Just as happy as they make up their minds to be. Happiness is not of externals, it comes from within." • 7. PRACTICE GIANT FAITH. The hope of abundant and eternal life through Christ will add quality and years to your life.

Jun. 23, 1994 - Run Toward Your Goliath With Great Style © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
Being spiffy after fifty is fun for the woman who makes life an adventure. The pacesetting, fifty something woman who thinks she is attractive exudes self-confidence! Uncork the magic of self-confidence with your total appearance, body language and expertise.
"And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it." Psalms 90:17 KJV
"People are not afraid of getting older. They are afraid of getting ugly," Wanda Dalby, Senior Sales Director for Mary Kay Cosmetics, informed her skin care class.
Wanda is 50ish, fabulous and female. She runs toward the goliath of aging with great style. With her classic, stylish, confident appearance she is on the cutting edge of looking a cut above the average woman. The eye catching straw hat decorated with a bright yellow sunflower, strapped to her shoulder, caught my eye. Upon closer observation, I realized this hat served as Wanda's "backpack. Underneath the gorgeous hat a neat round back pack was attached. Being a traveling lady, this was a neat way to carry a purse leaving both hands free. This stylish, easy to carry back pack has become Wanda's signature.
I questioned Wanda how she could look so "Fabulous at 50ish?" She laughed, "Somehow, someway, I got locked in at 28 years old in my mind." "I think I am 28," she said. "In my mind I am 28. When someone asks my age, I often say 28, before I think how many years I have lived." "Its amazing to feel 28. I love feeling 28 and having the intelligence, maturity and confidence 50 years of living gives me."
Wanda gave me some words to think about when she told me, "If you think you're old, you are. What you think about you bring about." One of Wanda Dalby's secrets of being 50ish, fabulous and female is she dresses for successful aging. Dressing for successful aging is our forte! Yes! Yes! We are the ambassadors for Christ! (II Corinthians 5:20)
Creating a polished image; sparkling with charm and love; wrapped in an aura of passion, puts an aging woman in the winners circle. Yes, it is important for your appearance to demand respect! Yes, it is important for you to work to make your own personal style the best that it can be! Sure, you can be a "Nifty at Fifty" '90's woman, whatever your age!
Individual elegance demonstrates your beauty, style, and shouts "I'm an interesting person." When you step out into your world at 50, your peers will think you have stepped out of a time warp. Run toward your goliath, aging, with great style, BEING - 50ISH, FABULOUS AND FEMALE.

Jul. 7, 1994 - Remodeling Our Lives Into Beauty © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
Have you ever remodeled your house. There must be a master plan in tearing out the old and building back the new. The excitement of remodeling a house that has become outmoded, inconvenient, and unserviceable, adds zest to life. Our lives could be compared to our homes.
As we become older and wiser we realize that certain areas need tearing out and rebuilding. Our creator has the master plan to remodel our lives, to give the Holy Spirit a comfortable, enjoyable place to reside.
When we remodeled our home a few years ago, I watched the workmen make a strong new foundation for a new wing. I thought, when we remodel our lives, the foundation should be made stronger with more knowledge of God and the feeling of His presence. The carpenters tore out walls that had been weakened by termites and replaced them with strong new walls. Likewise, the walls of our lives that have been eaten by the termites of busyness, mediocrity, or complacency must be replaced by new boards of wise use of time, excellence and enthusiasm.
We replaced the clouded windows of our old house with new ones. Remodeling our lives involves putting new windows in the rooms filled hate, frustration, and selfishness to let the warm sunlight of God's love beam inside. The roof is a big project when remodeling a house. Throwing away the old shingles of insecurity, fear, hopelessness, then replacing with new ones, faith, love and peace will make life feel new.
When the house is remodeled, we take good pieces of furniture and refurbisish and shine each one. We may even add new furniture. Our lives are filled with good pieces of furniture such as love of God, country, and people; so, we will refurbish, polish and shine each one. Then we will add new furniture - joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance. With proper alterations our homes become charming, comfortable places to live.
God, the master planner, will remodel our aging lives into beauty and charm.
"By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures." Proverbs 24:3-4 NIV
"Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing." Psalms 92:13-14 KJV
To be Fabulous After 50 let us give our lives to God the master planner to be remodeled.

Jul. 14, 1994 - Throw Disuse Out The Window © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
To be realistic, there are wounds and blessings of aging. The popular attitudes are deterioration, disease, retirement from life, loneliness, and grief. As a result, many aging people are depressed, have low motivation, and low self-esteem. The mental picture seems to be, vegetating in a nursing home, or passing the last days in a hospital.
On the contrary, my research proved to me that the No. 1 enemy of aging is disuse, plus a negative attitude. For instance, if a broken leg is put in a cast, in a few weeks of disuse it will wither and start to die. This is exactly what happens to a person who puts life in an aging cast after 50. When the cast is removed, the leg that was broken looks much older and less useful than the good leg. Disuse has taken its toll.
This is what happens to an aging person who does not continue to grow, go and become. Disuse will take its toll, as that person begins to deteriorate body, soul and spirit. Disuse brings on aging. Being young and being old are states of mind not dates in time. God empowers His children to add life and quality to our years.
Gravity, sun and time may wrinkle the skin, and depression, worry, a broken spirit, and failure to dream may wrinkle the soul, but God empowers His children to rise up from within and climb their own mountain to a higher plateau. The words from a needlepoint pillow jumped out at me, "The older the violin, the sweeter the music."
The Fabulous After 50 bunch will make life a high sea adventure. Disuse will be swallowed up in the sea of travel, reading, communicating, higher achievement, sensual times, happy times, family, spiritual growth, sensitivity to real life.
I heard Norman Vincent Peal address an audience when he was ninety years young. Though his body was slower, his giant spirit reached out and hugged me with words of hope, enthusiasm, and possibilities. Norman Vincent Peal gave positive hope to millions of people after he turned 50. His books, radio and television programs, preaching, personal counseling touched millions of lives in a positive manner. Dr. Peal's aging journey was joyful and productive. He did not allow disuse to dwindle, diminish, or shrink in any way.
As you travel your journey, take Dr. Peal as a role model and throw disuse out the window.

Jul. 21, 1994 - A Personal Relationship With God Fills All Holes © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
Mary, a 50-something wealthy widow, made an appointment with a clinical gerontologist. She bared her soul, saying, "I have wealth, friends, travel advantages, a lovely home and an active church life, however something is missing." The counseling psychologist asked, "What's going on with you and God?" "Nothing," Mary replied. Not having a personal relationship with God was leaving a big hole in Mary's life.
Those of us who have the privilege to experience late life, have the opportunity and challenge to embark on a new adventure. The adventure of an ever-deepening love affair with God and life, puts pizzazz into mature living. The primary spiritual task of later life is an intense love affair with God. More vitality and love are the offsprings of a love affair with God.
A cosmic love affair deepens and intensifies as years go by. In my own mind, God has saved the best life for the last. Why?
(1) We experience wisdom, (...the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. James 3:17 NIV) (2) We have the opportunity to experience deeper faith. Our total body, soul and spirit believes in a God bigger than life. (3) We accept God's grace. His unmerited favor. (4) We have learned to forgive. Forgiveness sets us free from hate, anger and stress. (5) We have learned to enjoy the moment. In God's wisdom, He allows us only one moment at a time with which to deal. (6) We fall into the all-consuming loving arms of God because, His love is unconditional. Unconditional love produces freedom. (7) We anticipate Heaven.
Mary's mature years had become boring, bitter and jaded; because, she had pushed God to the perimeter of her life. As a mature adult we have the choice to make our lives richer by a deepening of our faith, or poorer by an abandonment of living faith.
A book that will get your spiritual juices flowing is Jane Marie Thibault's book A Deepening Love Affair, (The Gift of God in Later Life.) Printed by The Upper Room, Nashville, TN.

Jul. 28, 1994 - Growing Older Without Getting Old © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
Growing Older Without Getting Old...
The "Age Wave" is coming! Of that no one will deny. The older crowd is growing in number. It's our time to fly.
Jesus is the answer, as we walk this glory road. We're only getting better. We're not getting old.
Exercise is the golden egg, that will retard our aging. We walk, jog and jazzercise, to keep our energy raging.
With proper diet and attitude, we golden oldies believe, we retard the ravages of age, gravity and disease.
The T-shirted woman moved briskly past where I stood. The T-shirt shouted, "It took 70 years to look this good."
Personal excellence for superior living, will always fill our world, with love, joy and giving.
What's our secret for getting older without getting old? Positive thinking and enthusiasm. It's the oldest secret ever told!
Jumping into the sea of aging, with wild anticipation, exhilaration, excitement, and adventure, will be our reputation!

Aug. 11, 1994 - Discouragement Is Leukemia Of The Soul © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
Every person at some point in time struggles with discouragement. Pressure from our fast lifestyle seems to drain our energy and courage on a daily basis. Being 50 and over often discourages us, when we think life has passed us by, and we have not accomplished our goals. Or, we may look to the future with fear.
Often we gain inspiration from another person. This week I enjoyed The Alabama Writer's Conclave on the campus of my old alma mater, The University of Montevallo. At the author's dinner, the president recognized a classy lady author celebrating her 94th birthday. She was wearing a golf airplane wings pin. When asked about the pin, she shared with us that she had been the first woman to receive her pilots license in the U.S. At 94 years young, she is in the process of publishing a book. "What's age got to do with it?" she laughed.
Not only do we look to role models for inspiration and encouragement, we take words of encouragement, thanks, appreciation and cheer from friends to keep our soul from feeling sick from discouragement.
However, God is the great encourager. Not only has God promised to be Savior and Lord; but He is involved in our daily lives, always working in, around and through us. To have faith in God is the greatest encourager. "...If God be for us, who can be against us?" Romans 8:31
Discouragement is one of satan's most diabolical tools against you. He wants to keep you from reaching your full potential during your golden years. Satan wants to give you leukemia of the soul. Don't allow satan to discourage you. God is greater!

Aug. 18, 1994 - Wisdom Is The Trumpcard Of Aging © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
Moses was in his eighties when he wrote the 90th Psalm. He said, "Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom (Psalm 90:12 NIV)."
It's interesting to me that God tells us to number our days aright, not our years. He gives us small bites of days to live. We only have to deal with the moment. I encourage you to grab each day as a challenge not a threat. One way to "gain a heart of wisdom" is to follow the Lord wholeheartedly.
Caleb, one of the spies Moses sent into the promise land to explore the land, is a prime example of following the Lord wholeheartedly and gaining strength and wisdom with age. Caleb said, "I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh Barnea to explore the land. And I brought him back a report according to my convictions, but my brothers who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt with fear. I, however, followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly. So on that day Moses swore to me, The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance and that of your children forever, because you have followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.'"
"Now then, just as the Lord promised, he has kept me live for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the desert. So here I am today, eighty-five years old! I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I'm just as vigorous to go out battle now as I was then." (Joshua 14:7-11 NIV)
Caleb proves to each of us that it is possible for the greatest achievements of our lives to occur in old age. His life also shouts, "Christians do not retire from life!" Caleb's life proves that age isn't our problem. It's our attitude. We have been programmed by society that at sixty-five we are not useful anymore. This invisible media force pushes the valuable, wiser, older people out of the mainstream of life.
However, the "Fabulous after 50" of the 1990's are changing the way society feels about getting older. Older is Better! Age is not a choice; however, we have control of our attitude. I encourage you to take Caleb's attitude. (1) Grab each day and make it grandiose. (2) Follow God wholeheartedly. Wisdom is the trump card of aging.

Aug. 25, 1994 - Retard The Ravages Of Age, Gravity And Disease © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
With proper diet, exercise, and mental attitude, the "Fabulous After 50" have the opportunity to retard the ravages of age, gravity and disease. Nutritionist Pam Smith, author of The Food Trap, has given me permission to share with my readers her "Ten Commandments of Great Nutrition."
I. Thou Shalt never skip breakfast. II. Thou shalt eat every three to four hours. III. Thou shalt always eat a carbohydrate with a protein. IV. Thou shalt double your fiber. V. Thou shalt trim the fat from your diet. VI. Thou shalt believe your mother was right: Eat your fruits and vegetables. VII. Thou shalt get your vitamins and minerals from food, not pills. VIII. Thou shalt drink at least eight glasses of water a day. IX. Thou shalt consume a minimum of sugar, salt, caffeine and alcohol. X. Thou shalt never, never go on a fad diet!
Following Pam's "Ten Commandments of Great Nutrition" and the USDA's recommendations for daily nutrition requirements, "The Fabulous After 50" crowd should look good and feel good. The USDA suggests we eat each day six to 11 servings of breads, cereals, and other whole grain products; two to four servings of fruits; three to five servings of vegetables; two to three servings of meat, poultry, fish and alternates; two servings milk, cheese, and yogurt and avoid too many fats, sweets and alcoholic beverages.
Eating healthy will help you look and feel your best. Glowing silky hair and clear skin are by-products of a nutritious balanced diet. Your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate), the rate at which your body burns calories, may decline two percent every decade. This aging process is known as the "Middle Age Spread." To offset the fact of decreasing metabolism, you must modify diet and increase exercise.
Even more important than diet is our water intake. We could live without food for several weeks, but without water we would die in a few days. More than half the body weight is water (digestive juices, blood, urine, lymph, and perspiration.) Our organ functions and cell processes depend upon water. It is a lubricant, basis of mucous secretions, saliva and fluids that bathe the joints. Water helps regulate digestion of food and body temperature. The body needs to replace lost fluids of two to three quarts per day. Your tap water is the most reliable source. However, juice, milk and soup will help make up that two to three quarts minimum. Coffee, tea, and cola are not ideal for the purpose of replacing lost fluids because they have a diuretic effect.
To be full of "sap" and electric energy, eat smart, exercise, and think big. You will have a fun-raising day.

Sept. 1, 1994 - Add Vigor And Power To Fabulous After 50 © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
As the first of the baby boomers migrate up the lifeline into the second half of life, the senior boom will begin. The "Age Wave" is coming! We are changing our paradigm from number of years to quality of life. We are changing our paradigm from the image of people over 50 being frugal and winding down to people who are vigorous and economically powerful.
The last half of life can be played more exciting if older people are properly motivated to live their best and be their best. Great communication skills and leadership skills are invaluable in reaching your goals in life.
In my own life I needed greater communication and leadership skills, but did not have the time for a classroom situation. Therefore, I joined Toastmasters International, Talk of Sand Mountain, Club No. 5137, District 48. I am having tremendous fun, learning to speak, listen, and develop self confidence with the spirit of camaraderie, and the energy of mutual support from friends in a workshop atmosphere. The mission of the club is to "provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth." "Through its member clubs, Toastmasters International helps men and women learn the arts of speaking, listening and thinking - vital skills that promote self-actualization, enhance leadership potential, foster human understanding, and contribute to the betterment of mankind."
Participation in each club meeting is 100 percent. Each meeting prepared speeches of five to seven minutes are presented. Table topics is an impromtu speaking exercise that will help you learn to "think on your feet." Table Topics helps you in such situations as interviews, seminars, business meetings and conversations. Also everyone serves in key positions at meetings, including Toastmaster, Topicmaster, Evaluator, and Time Keeper.
The program builds upon what you have learned in the past. It starts with an "Icebreaker" speech on a subject that you are an expert - yourself. In the nine speeches that follow the "Icebreaker" to earn your (CTM) Competent Toastmaster Award, you learn organization, proper body language, voice variety, proper word usage and how to persuade and inspire your audience.
If you are interested in increasing your communication and leadership skills join one of the clubs in your area. You may call Randy Lang at 891-6260 or 878-4933 for more information.

Sept. 8, 1994 - A Smile Will Erase The Lines Of Aging © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
"Thinking a smile all the time will keep your face youthful," Frank Gelett Burgess.
I enjoyed a conversation with a "Fabulous After 50" woman at the National Walking Horse Celebration in Shelbyville, Tenn. She and her husband own a former Grand World Champion Tennessee Walking Horse. Her warm friendly smile on her face. Style is her forte. Her perfectly groomed, golden blond hair, glistened in the sunlight. The interesting, upbeat conversation grabbed my attention. Her radiance transformed her into an ageless woman.
Many "Fabulous After 50" people succumb to plastic surgery when they observe "crow's feet," "turkey necks," or "drooping eyelids." There is nothing wrong with plastic surgery, but a smile is cheaper and less painful. A smile is the best face-lift. Radiance from the spirit within will transform the face into a more youthful expression. Joy lifts the face into a glow of happiness.
Being connected with GOD, (the source of all power); SELF, (the unique you, God created special); and ETERNITY, will illuminate God's Shekinah Glory shining through your aging face. Shekinah -- God's supernatural light or cloud.
"But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord." (II Co. 3:18 KJV)
I like being in my fifties. The smile on my face mirrors the joy of surviving 50 years; feeling young inside; experiencing the pinnacle of creativity; enjoying satisfying relationships; savoring lasting friendships; and praising my God. I'm glad a smile, radiance from within, continuing joy, and real happiness give people after 50 a face lift.
Mark Twain said, "Wrinkles should merely indicate where smiles have been."

Sept. 15, 1994 - Autumn Of Life Splashes Color © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
The Autumn of one's life could be compared to the Autumn Season. Nature puts on a dazzling, show during the Fall Season, in Alabama. God takes his brush and paints the leaves vibrant scarlet, deep purple, sunshine yellow, and glowing orange to make the landscape postcard beautiful. Just as the Autumn of the year splashes bright colors everwhere, so does the Autumn of one's life.
Dori Sanders, author of Clover, and Her Own Place, certainly is experiencing a colorful 50-plus life. She is fast becoming one of the leading black, southern writers of this decade. When Dori isn't writing, she operates a large peach farm in York County, S.C. She and her staff grow watermelons and vegetables to sell in the Sanders' Peach Shed, her family's open-air produce stand. Dori doesn't have time to think about age, as she is a popular television talk show guest and a speaker in demand across the nation. She proves that the quality of life is much more important than the number of years lived.
As I interviewed Dori, I asked, "How do you have such a fresh approach to life?" She answered in her southern drawl, "Each new day is fresh to me. I work in fresh air, with fresh produce. Each new day gives me a new outlook and fresh approach to life."
Each day I know Dori Sanders will get out of bed and embrace life. I have no doubt that she will relish it, and enjoy her day, taking no thought of age.
An empty nest, maybe a second career you enjoy, grandparentlng and more leisure time add pizazz to life. During the Fall of the year and the Fall of your life, you begin to feel a certain amount of exhilaration and excitement. Many empty nesters (parents whose children are living outside the original home) have more money to spend, more time to travel, motivation to feel good, look good, renovate and redecorate. The empty nesters say, "It's our time to sail on our voyage of discovery."
I'm inviting you to get excited about being strong enough to have lived fifty or more years of life. Congratulations! You have survived the tides of disease and accidents. To take God's free gift of years, adding increased spiritual strength and faith, will give renewed life to the Fall of our lives.

Sept. 22, 1994 - Be A Prime Example Of Personal Excellence © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
"I don't put top priority on the five Olympic gold medals I have won, but being my personal best," said speedskater Bonnie Blair. Bonnie's face beamed as she told her audience, "I go out and give 100 percent no matter what race I'm in."
Bonnie Blair inspired me as I heard her speak at a breakfast sponsored by Kellogg's Corp. She adorns the cover of the Kellogg's Corn Flakes, Gold Medalist Commemorative Box. Bonnie is a prime example of personal excellence for superior living.
She said, "I try to be my best in everything I do."
Bonnie's parents put her on ice skates at age 2. She loved to skate. When she was 12 years old her father introduced her as an Olympic winner. Her father's encouraging words planted a seed that grew into an unprecedented winner for women in U.S. History. Speedskater Bonnie Blair, a native of Champaign, Illinois, time after time has proven her metal as she has succeeded five times to be tops under great pressure and true competition.
Bonnie said, "It's a great rivalry. But when I race, my focus is on myself and what I can do better. My challenge was to skate my best race ever."
Those of us who have reached the half century birthday could draw strength from this winner.
(1) BE YOUR PERSONAL BEST (2) BE YOUR BEST IN EVERYTHING YOU DO (3) GIVE 100 PERCENT NO MATTER WHAT RACE YOU'RE IN (4) FOCUS - by being (A) dedicated (B) having a sense of balance (C) willing to take a risk.
Our aging society is becoming tall timber. This is the time to stand tall, like our role model, Bonnie Blair, and become a winner. Though Bonnie is short in stature, she is the greatest American Olympic athlete ever. Aging will represent a big pile of chips in the future; so, get out there and make a difference.

Sept. 29, 1994 - Each Day Is A Special Gift From The Master's Hand © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
As you and I become a surfer on the "Age Wave,'' we will dissolve the fears of (1) Can life be good after middle age?; (2) Will I survive the "jaws of menopause?"; (3) Will I have an exciting sex life after menopause?; (4) Can I be forever 35 in my mind Set?; (5) Is exercise the golden egg of aging?; (6) Physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually will I have zeal for life?; (7) Will I be able to keep my family Ctles strong?; (8) Is a personal • relationship with Jesus :. Christ possible?; (9) Is it possible to know God and face death with faith?; (10) Is there a heaven?
My desire is to climb down into the darkness aging causes you to feel in your soul, and bring you up to the light of the treasures buried this in aging, as you read this column each Thursday.
Why not search for the "Fountain of Youth"? Back through the pages of time the "placebo effect" of the search for the "Fountain of Youth" has caused a positive mind set. It all happens between the ears! A positive attitude and lifestyle go a long way in making you feel and act young. Your age is a state of mind, not dates in time. Each new day is a special gift from the Master's hand to you. He hands you a package of 1,440 new, unused minutes each day to be spent in the manner you choose. At the end of the day, your 1,440 minutes are gone forever. You cannot save them or carry them over to the next day.
"Each new day is a new life," sang gorgeous, radiant, Miss Alabama, 1993, Kim Wimmer. As the melody permeated the air, my spirit caught the message.
The opportunities of today will never be repeated. So walk through every door with enthusiasm. A great way to start the day at the first awareness after a good night's sleep is to resolve in your heart, "This is the day the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it!" (Paraphrase of Psalms 118:24)
Think of what a difference this positive attitude will make in your life. If you cherish the life you live, you will capture the spirit of an ageless person. God in His infinite wisdom gives each of us only one moment at a time. We only deal with the moment.

Oct. 6, 1994 - After 50 Is An Exciting New Period © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous After Fifty™
Say yes to life! Life is an adventure. Being fifty something creates curiosity. We want to learn new things. Seeing a new movie, reading a stimulating book, traveling, meeting a new person, making a new friend, or listening to music activates mid-life discoveries.
I enjoyed an adventure recently riding the Cog Train up the 9-mile Cog railway, 4,110 feet above sea level, to Pikes Peak, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Experiencing the breath-taking view from atop Pikes Peak, I was inspired by the beauty of our country. As I stood at the top of the Rocky Mountain peak, I observed a brass plaque displaying the words of the song, "America the Beautiful."
This popular, American, patriotic song was written on this spot, by Katharine Lee Bates in 1893. She must have been feeling the same inspiration I was experiencing when she penned the words:
O Beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain, For purple mountain majesties Above the fruited plain: America! America. God shed His grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea
Katharine Lee Bates and the other people who climbed Pikes Peak, one hundred years ago, did not have a cog traim to ride. They had the adventure of climbing on foot, riding horses, or horse drawn wagons. Today. Pikes Peak is the center of one of the most popular mountain-resort areas in the United States. Also, the National Weather Service maintains one of the highest meteorological stations in the world, there.
America is a sensational place to celebrate our mid-life discoveries. After 50 is an exciting new period in life. After 50 is a new country for each of us to explore. Youth has more to do with mind and spirit than years lived.

Oct. 13, 1994 - Praising God Is Heavenly Language © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous After Fifty™
The 50-plus people are stars of the '90s. We have the winning edge with a positive attitude, personal excellence and bold faith. I praise God that you and I have survived the tides of disease and accidents. Failing to praise God may be one of the greatest neglects of people deep in the heart of aging. Because, God inhabits the praise of His saints. (Psalm 22: 3 KJV)
Unwavering confidence in God leads to a spontaneous attitude of gratitude and praise, whatever the circumstances. Paul E. Billheimer in his book, "Destined For The Throne," said, "Praise is the spark plug of faith.''
We can pray with the scripture "Praise be to the Lord God, the God of Israel, who alone does marvelous deeds. Praise be to His glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with His glory. Amen and Amen..." Psalm 72:18-19 NIV
One benefit of praising God is exchanging a spirit of heaviness for a garment of praise. The prophet Isaiah gives us the message in Isaiah 61:3 that Jesus came "To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heavliness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He might be glorified." NIV
Just off my bedroom patio, a healthy oak tree is growing, strong and straight. As the vast sprawling root systems grow deep into the fertile soil, the oak tree on top of the ground grows tall and strong, spreading its branches far into the air. A perfect place for the birds to nest. Like the sprawling oak tree, ageless people whose inner lives are growing deep into the spirit of God, will display a strong, straight, powerful life. A pure heart, a holy life, and a simple faith, will cause roots of prayer, Bible study, and revelation to produce a mighty oak in you.
Christians are citizens of heaven! We should be speaking life! "Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God." Psalm, 50:23 KJV
Praise the Lord!

Oct. 27, 1994 - Participate In The Dance Of Change © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous After Fifty™
Aging is constant change like shifting shadows. The shades of change can be exciting, magic, and fruitful as we focus on the positive side of change.
Mr. Malcolm Gillis, of Toney, Ala., at 60 years old holds the world's record for his age group in 1/2 marathon (13.1 miles) running. When I interviewed Mr. Gillis, I asked, "What are your secrets for successful aging?"
"Number 1," he said, "The aging person must stay extremely active, and have many interests in life. "Number 2, eat sparingly. Metabolism slows down after 50. "Number 3, eat little or no meat. I am a vegetarian."
Mr. Gillis travels all over the world to participate in marathons. He enjoys being 60 years young. Every day in life offers a fresh start. Mr. Gillis is not 60 years old, he is sixty years new. To embrace change is to be pioneers of the future. Concentrate only on the future, because that is where you will live the rest of your life.
Participate in the dance of change. Being in touch with yourself, and God, gives you the courage to take risks and grow as your life changes. The kaleidoscope of change brings on new vitality, as that feisty girl or boy of youth breaks through in your personality. If the winds of change are blowing you into new territory, count it all an adventure. This is the time to stretch and grow. Dare to embrace change and dream big!
Aging is like a fortune cookie, it's what's on the inside that counts. Have a royal attitude about the changes aging brings into your life, and you will come out on top.
"Probably the happiest period in life most frequently is in middle age, when the eager passions of youth are cooled, and the infirmities of age not yet begun; as we see that the SHADOWS, which are at morning and evening so large, almost entirely disappear at mid-day." - Thomas Arnold

Nov. 3, 1994 - Search For The Highest Peak Of Life © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
The last decade of the twentieth century heightens my sensitivity. The year 2000 shines in my expectation like the morning star. The last decade before one becomes 50 years young, heightens one's sensitivity. For instance, Christopher Columbus made his first voyage to America in his early forties. He made this voyage For God...For Gold.
Like Christopher Columbus, our mid-life years can prove to be the most provocative, productive, progressive, and positive. I like to call the mid-life years the "fountain of age." These years can be rich with as much growth and experimentation as adolescence; however, with greater wisdom. Our priorities are more focused as we exchange youth for experience.
When Thomas Jefferson was seventy-two, his friend John Adams asked him if he would go back to his birth and live his life again? The years Thomas Jefferson chose to relive were fifty-five to sixty.
Life is not downhill. Life is a series of renewals. Middle-age is one of the times of renewal in life, just as end-, of-the-century shouts renewal. Renewal in mid-life requires different activities, higher goals, and deeper relationships. As we approach the year 2000, and the 77 million baby boomers age, our society will change its emphasis from how to get started to how to finish successfully.
Mid-life will become a time of high achievement from wisdom and experience, instead of retirement, or being put out to pasture for leisure time only. The final stage of life is the reward stage, which comes after death. To anticipate the eventual arrival of eternity, makes one look at aging in a different light. Life's curve is an upward spiral to heaven. Putting God in the center of your heart empowers you to keep learning, doing and advising as you move toward heaven.
Participating in our freedom to vote, Nov. 8, we feel gratitude for Christopher Columbus, Thomas Jefferson, and all the people who have built a foundation of freedom for us to live our lives. We feel praise rising up in our souls to God as we prepare for our Thanksgiving, holiday. With gratitude, praise, and anticipation for the future, we graying, aging will dare to reach our full potential, as we search for the highest peak of life.

Nov. 10, 1994 - Say Yes To The Lordship Of Jesus © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
I was 15. Riding my bike down the rocky path to the barn, long brown hair streaming behind, my fertilizer bag dress flapped my boney knees. I knew in my mind that I was a "Child of the King." Why? The night before, in the silence of my heart and the silence of my bedroom, I had said yes to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
Though I was wearing a dress I sewed myself, from colorful printed fertilizer bags retrieved from the cotton fields, I embraced a feeling of royalty. Now, forty years later, as I write, this reality is indelibly imprinted in my mind. I live with the luxury of being a member of the Royal Family of God. The secret of being "Fabulous After 50" is to be born into the universal, "Royal" family of God as a born again believer, and be a child of the King.
You can jump deeper into life with great anticipation even if you are fifty years young. How? Nurturing an intimate relationship with God's son, Jesus Christ, propels your life into eternal, universal living. Jesus Christ is the life preserver that will save you from sinking into the sea of aging, and empower you to swim victoriously with the hope of eternal life.
I locked in my mind the hope of eternal life, attending a small country church with my family. Each year the members of Mt. Vernon Church were revived spiritually while emphasis was placed on the importance of being born again. Returning home from one of these services, I felt an urgency to secure my soul for eternity with Christ.
We lived on a cotton farm in a square white house with four equal rooms, built by my dad in the middle of the potato patch. That hot August night, lying in my small stuffy bedroom the minister's words were like a laser beam burning through my mind. He had proclaimed from the pulpit, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that Whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16 KJV
The minister assured me the blood of Jesus would wash me as white as snow. An Old Testament Prophet said, "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow, though they be red like crimson they shall be like wool." (Isaiah 1:18 KJV)
In the silence of my own bedroom and in the silence of my heart, I said Yes to Jesus. In my mind, I saw white snow and white wool. I knew my life had been cleansed and there was no scarlet sins staining my life. My sins had been covered by the blood of Jesus, forever! If I died before morning, I knew I would go directly to heaven to be with Jesus, and live forever.
This is the secret of being "Fabulous After 50."

Nov. 17, 1994 - Believe Anything Is Possible With God © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
As life unfolds moment by moment it is a spiral toward heaven. Don't crush the delicate flower of aging by programming your brain that life after 50 is less than great. The "Fabulous after 50" person is fit and feisty, with an indefatigable spirit, and has unrestricted exuberance.
Speaking of indefatigable spirit, brings to my mind Joni Eareckson Tada of Agoura Hills, California. She has been paralyzed from her neck down since she was 18 years old. Joni paints pictures, hold-tag the pastel pencils between her teeth. She praises God for the gift He has given her. As her neck muscles ache from hours of painting, she thanks God for the strength and stamina to paint.
Joni designs a Christmas card each year and sells it throughout the world. I ordered her Christmas cards this year, called the SAVIOR OF THE WORLD. Holding a paint brush between her teeth, she painted packages under a Christmas Tree, with the word "JESUS" spelled with children's alphabet building blocks. Joni writes on the back of the Christmas card, "Imagine the joy of a little kid playing with his new alphabet blocks on Christmas morning. He carefully places the letters to read, 'JESUS.' And there, underneath the with the rest of the packages, a child reminds us of the greatest gift of all. As I rendered this drawing, holding the pastel pencils between my teeth, the joy of Jesus welled within my heart. What gift He is!"
Joni's art work inspires and incourages many people to do as much as they can with their limitations. She encourages people to do things they "can do," instead of concentrating on all the things they "can't do." Many people are buoyed up and encouraged to rise above their circumstances by Joni's example.
Many aging people have the mind set that aging sets limitations on their lives. Let's take Joni's example and believe that anything is possible with God. The ageless 50-plus people will embrace life each moment and live passionately and forcefully through eternity.

Nov. 23-24,1994 - Feel Ripely Appreciative In Your Fifties © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
My friend Norma said, "I feel ripely appreciative in my fifties. I have survived the tides of disease and accidents. I feel stronger - mentally, physically, socially and spiritually. I am more self confident through the positive power of Jesus Christ, and 50 years of living. I like being fifty something."
"I am health conscious. I exercise every day. My desire is to have at least 90 percent of my total body capacity when I die. The noted gerontologist, Nathan Shock, believes true age changes are about 8 percent decline per year, beginning at age 30."
"Though I am fifty something, I have positive ideas and attitude. I feel I am at my creative peak! I am not embittered about aging. I plan to grow old in a positive way. I plan to age creatively, energetically and productively."
"Aging is a plus for a writer. Age and experience just makes me better at my craft. I do not feel diminished or declining. I feel as if my career is on the launch pad. Now that my wonderful children are grown and independent, I don't feel confined to child care; so, I definitely am increasing my focus on career. I like this time in my life."
"At fifty something, I have more friends. (Spiritual Mends, women and men friends, writer friends and family friends.) I feel rich."
"Being fifty something makes me more curious. I have to learn new things. Seeing a new movie, reading a stimulating book, meeting a new person, or listening to music makes life extraordinary."
"At last I have leisure time! Hurray! I like lag time, self time, and solitude. Solitude is a rare and treasured time for me. It is the most incredible luxury."
"After raising a gorgeous family, I love this pausal time of life. I am free to be. I laid a beautiful foundation in my life of family, God and country. Now is my time to build on that foundation."
"My desire is to help remove the stigma of aging from women; so, the younger women who age will not feel depressed."
"I have found my rhythm. I love my husband, but I do not expect him to be my happiness. I am already happy. I enjoy my life. I have my own identity. Self-acceptance is priceless. I like myself."
"I feel a spirit of aliveness within myself. I feel like saying YES TO LIFE! I regard life as an adventure!"
"With hope of eternity through my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, I am euphoric about the future."

Dec. 22, 1994 - Be Enthusiastic About The Ageless Appeal Of Christmas © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
The most beautiful poinsettia arrived at the door of our home last week from a couple of friends. The huge, brilliant red plant added great color and natural pizazz to my Christmas decorating; so, my curiosity about the poinsettia was aroused.
I learned through an article by The Associated Press that "the plant is named for the U.S. diplomat who introduced it to the United States after being dispatched as President John Quincy Adams' envoy to Mexico in 1825. Diplomat Joel Robert Poinsett was taken by the local plant whose name translates into English as FLOWER OF THE HOLY NIGHT."
The poinsettia along with the myriad of holiday traditions puts me in the mood for celebrating Christmas. A personal relationship with the King of Kings, Jesus Christ, unlocks the magic of love for me on His Birthday. The love of Christmas seems to put every human being on a level playing field. There are no little "U's" and big "I's." Love has an equalizing effect. The spirit of Christmas is the thread of love that connects people.
I am enthusiastic about the ageless appeal of Christmas. It is the time of year when the 50-plus people feel ageless and fabulous.
As God wraps his warm blanket of LOVE around your heart, life, home, and world, I pray you see Him in the light of his tenderness and caring. I praise him because, "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." (Romans 8:l) I praise Jesus because he said, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." (John 10:10) I praise God because He "so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
