As I anticipate winter, I imagine landscapes transformed with pristine white snow. In the South, we get only a dusting of snow; however, we enjoy the pictures of snow that beautify the other parts of the world.
As 2009 pops up over the horizon, can we say as we dared to dream, did we enjoy the journey of 2008, and are we flying to new heights of excellence? It's important that we look forward to the season of bliss in 2009! The beginning of abundant living begins in the soul and heart.
III John: 2, "Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper, and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth."
As the winds howl outside it's time to think about having hot tea. The only thing cozier than sipping a steaming cup of hot tea during winter is sharing that moment with someone you love. As winter chill whistles outside, let the candlelight dance throughout your home making it warm with a shimmering glow. As you nestle into a warm bed it's a delicious moment to read God's love letter to you, the Holy Bible, before going to sleep.
The upcoming winter months are a great time to share a bit of bliss by writing the people you love handwritten letters. Sharing your soul with how you feel about them. Even though we have e-mail, nothing compares to the pleasure delivered by a handwritten personal letter. While you're snowed in, take time to share your love with personal notes to the people in your circle of life.
I love the four seasons in Alabama. I thank God for the seasons and look forward to winter melting into the beautiful spring season.
Oscar Hammerstein said," A song is not a song 'till you sing it and love in your heart wasn't put there to stay. Love isn't love 'till you give it away!"
A new year is motivating. I start a new calendar. I have new ideas. I feel renewed in my spirit. I look at the mistakes of 2008 and meditate on how to improve in the New Year.
My goal during 2009 is to enjoy daily quiet time with my creator, reading His love letter to me, the Holy Bible, praying the listening to His still small voice in my heart. The purpose of a quiet time is to strengthen my personal relationship with Him. He has promised in His word He will direct my path. Putting Jesus in control of my life for 2009 gives me freedom to lie in love, joy and peace.

Feb. 12, 2009 - Learning From The Past And The Lord © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
Being a teenager during the 1950s gave me the experience of wearing poodle skirts, cancan petticoats, black and white saddle oxfords and Bobbie socks. With Elvis Presley as my music icon and the crew cut my favorite haircut for boys, life was rocking.
In Albertville, our favorite teen hang out occurred at Golden's drug store, a great store with a short order counter for Cokes and burgers. A movie at the Carol and Princess Theater with friends and my brother Buck, eating popcorn and drinking Cokes, gave me a huge treat.
Living on a cotton farm on South Broad Street in Albertville, I experienced pure joy going to work behind the candy counter every Saturday and Christmas season at V.J. Elmore's 5 and 10 Store. My income was $3 per day. At lunch, I walked across the street to the White Palace and bought a hamburger, Coke and pie for $1.37.
Now, in 2009, facing the economic crisis, I know as a people, we will change our focus to God, family, friends, home gatherings around the table, church, being more thankful and appreciating the important tings in life.
Moving into the "love month" of February, we again focus on the important things in life. God is love!
Romans 8:35 KJV: "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, of famine or nakedness, or peril, or sword?"
We are facing hard times in America. At the same time, we can focus on God's word for comforting times.
"For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come. "Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
As these verses sink into our souls, we will follow our new president's advice of "Change fear to hope!" The love of Christ is our hope.

As the world turns in February 2009, we face wars, global warming, economic slow down, natural disasters and the winter blues.
We should thank Abraham Lincoln. He said, "With the fearful strain that is on me night and day, if I did not laugh I should die." Lincoln made this statement during the Civil War, between the North and South, in the United States. He was a student of the Bible, so he knew the Bible said, "A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit drieth up the bones," (Proverbs 17: 22 KJY).
The legendary comedian Red Skelton said, "No matter what our heartache may be, laughing helps you forget it for a few seconds." Country music star, Willie Nelson, sings a song called "It's Always Now."
If you are foxy after 40, fabulous after 50, sensational after 60, sexy after 70, feel like two 40-year-olds after 80, still growing after 90 or loving life at 100, now is the time laugh. Laughter is a mechanism everyone has. Laughter is part of universal human vocabulary. It is linked with activation of the brain, producing endorphins after a rewarding experience. It has been shown that laughter helps protect the heart. Some studies show laughter boosts the levels of immune cells.
A study involving 40 children scheduled for surgery showed that children who had a clown present had significantly, less pre-surgery anxiety.
One way to beat the winter blues is laugh! Experts say most healthy children laugh 100 times a day, while adults only laugh 15.

Mar. 19, 2009 - Today Is Always The Present © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
The word "March" comes from the Roman word Martius. This was originally the first month of the Roman calendar and was named after Mars, the God of war. The Anglo-Saxons called the month the stormy or rugged month. March winds blow in the spring season.
We've all flown kites against the March wind. What fun! Running with the wind blowing against our face, feeling the tug of the kite as the it flies higher and higher. It's a lovely time to run with your grandkids as they laugh and squeal. A colorful kite flying in the March wind is an exhilarating experience for all.
One of the flowers most associated with March is the Narcissus, or daffodil. Named after the boy in Greek mythology who was changed into a flower, Narcissus is also know as the Lent lily because it blooms in early spring and the bloom usually drops before Easter. It is the main daffodil species of Britain.
We celebrate St. Patrick's Day with the Irish by wearing green, displaying shamrocks, coloring the rivers green, holding parades and drinking green beer. National Friendship Week during the windy month of March is a fabulous time to connect with that special circle of friends.
Eleanor Roosevelt said, "Many people will walk in and out of your life. But only true friends will leave footprints in your heart." Life brings many changes, particularly for people over 50 - an empty nest, aging parents, grandparenting, the loss of a spouse through death or divorce, retiring or changing careers.
The winds of change affect us emotionally, physically and spiritually. If the winds of change are blowing you into new territory, count it all an adventure. This is the time to stretch and grow. Dare to embrace change and dream big. God, through his perfect love, renews us day by day.
As a graduate of the Dale Carnegie Course, I have learned to live in "day-tight" compartments. This means recognizing that yesterday is gone forever, tomorrow may never come, but today is a present.
For each petal on the shamrock, this brings a wish your way. I wish you good: health, good luck and happiness for today and every day.

As we face hard times, let us remember Helen Keller's quote, "Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadows."
Struggling to celebrate life while making hard adjustment in lifestyle empowers Americans during change and challenge. The Bible, The Message translation, gives us Proverbs 15: 17 in modern language, "Better is a bread crust shared in love than a slab of prime rib served in hate." Keeping our face to the sunshine, we will work hard to make life better.
When we celebrate life, our celebration often centers on food. Think about it . We celebrate birthdays, graduations, awards, milestones in life, holidays and more with special cakes, foods and presents.
We celebrated the accomplishment of the film industry recently with the Oscar awards. An extraordinary amount of preparation went into this beautiful extravaganza. The stars were dressed to the nines on the red carpet. The women's dresses were extraordinary with jewelry to match. The famous chef, Wolfgang Puck, with a large staff, presented fabulous food at the grand banquet. The ballroom was filled with zip. zeal and charisma.
We share some of this energy as we escape into a movie to enjoy their entertainment.
Comedian Jerry Lewis won the humanitarian award at the Oscar celebration this year for his work each Labor Day for Jerry's Kids, those suffering from muscular dystrophy. He has made a difference in many lives, by raising millions of dollars. As he accepted the award, he shared, "I shall not pass this way but once." He was glad he could make a difference.
Jesus commanded us to love one another. With Jerry Lewis, we could adopt the attitude, "I shall pass this way but once!" Let us keep our face to the sunshine, love one another and celebrate life.

Apr. 2, 2009 - Lovely Treasures Lie Within Ugly Seeds © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
Hold a flower seed in your hand. Visualize the exquisite flower that will bloom from that seed. The brilliant color. The distinctive fragrance, the perfection and beauty of that flower is a miracle.
The splendor or the colorful array of spring flowers gives me a renewed vision of God's superior creativity. Traveling the highway viewing the many shades of green tells me one of God's favorite colors must be green. The ugly seed had to be planted in the ground. Inside that seed is a treasure. The seed is destined to die, the hardshell to fall away and then the new plant will grow into a magnificient flower.
In John 12: 24 (KJV), Jesus said, "Verily, verily. I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit."
Celebrating the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus this Easter ignites hope in our hearts. He was the first seed to die, to be planted into the ground and rise to a new glory and splendor.
As I place the fragrant, white Easter lily in my home this Easter, it reminds me of the new life I receive through the resurrection of Jesus. The hope of eternal life through Jesus Christ is renewed in my heart.
Are you still holding the ugly flower seed in your hand? Look at it. The Bible tells us that God's children are earthly vessels filled with heavenly treasurers. Just as the treasure, the flower is liberated from the seed, Jesus was liberated from the grave and so will we be liberated from death to life. Celebrating the Easter season is a glorious time of hope and renewal.
"The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of the birds is come ... " Song of Solomon 2: 12 (KJV).
One of the most celebrated moments in my life is the remembrance of kneeling at the base of an old tree in the Garden of Gethsemane on Good Friday in 1994. The Christian tour to The Holy Land had been a mountain top experience, but praying where Jesus prayed before he was nailed to the cross was overwhelming for me. I wept great tears of joy!
This Easter, the ugly seed has bloomed into brilliant flowers; the winter has passed and the grandeur of spring lights up the earth; while the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus fills us with joy! Joy takes the friction from life. We could compare celebrating the metamorphous of the ugly seed into a magnificent flower to celebrating life after 50. My personality is to celebrate life. This trait must be programmed into my DNA. Maybe it is in more ways than one.
Christ said,. "I have come that you might have life and have it more abundantly." John 10:10 (KJV).
I celebrated life in my childhood, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s. Every decade has been a jubilee. Now I'm suddenly 70. Beginning the high tide of the "Age Wave," at 70, I plan to escalate the grand finale of my life by soaring like the birds to new heights of excellence. I love the grand finale of a Broadway musical. Orchestras lay their greatest piece in the grand finale.
As we golden oldies celebrate this magnificent season, we magnify our grand finale.

May 21, 2009 - Graduation Brings New Opportunities © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Golden Years - Fabulous after Fifty™
I had the great privilege of joining my extended family at Auburn University to celebrate my oldest granddaughter's graduation. Oh, the joy of a goal accomplished. The keynote speaker, accomplished athlete and successful businessman, Bo Jackson, told the graduates to "set your goals high. Set them on the top shelf."
My grandfather was a stutterer; however, he could sing like a mocking bird and did not stutter. During the 1940s and 1950s, he directed the choir at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, in Boaz.
When Bo Jackson started at Auburn University, he stuttered. He has conquered his fear of public speaking. He has been on the public speaking circuit for the past 10 years.
The university's second Heisman Trophy winner encouraged the graduates to "get outside the box. Make, things happen. Be your own person." Inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1996 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1998, Jackson told the graduates to "step outside your comfort zone, take chances, grasp opportunities and take control of your life." Jackson lives with his wife, Linda, and their three children in Chicago. He certainly planted his footprints in the sands of time. He challenged the 2009 Auburn graduates to plant their own footprints in the sand.
Congratulations to all 2009 graduates!

We are aging during an awesome time in history. The United States government has projected that the number of elderly in America will double in the first two decades of the 21st century, by 2030. Two-thirds of all those who have ever lived to age 65 are living today.
On thing we do treasure as we age is our freedom. America, the land of the free, will be celebrating our treasured independence on July 4.
When I think about liberty, 2 Corinthians 3: 17 KJV comes to mind. "Now the Lord is that spirit, and where the spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty".
Abraham Lincoln's powerful dedication of the military cemetery at Gettysburg inspires us today, "That we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain. That this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom. And for that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth." I love the inscription on the wall of the Lincoln Memorial, in Washington, D.C.. "With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation's wounds."
Life in the United States of America should be celebrated every minute of every day. Don't wait until someday to enjoy your life in this great land of the free. The party is July 4, celebrating Independence Day. Celebrate your life as it happens, your interests, talents, your failures and opportunities, the people you love and your spirit. Icons of freedom squeeze our hearts as we focus on our precious freedom. July 4. "Old Glory" long may it wave.
The flag is how America signs her name. Today the American flag flies on the moon, sits atop Mount-Everest, is hurling out in space. "The Bald Eagle," the king of the birds, has the honor of being the symbol of freedom, power and immortality.
"The Statue of Liberty," in New York Harbor continues to be liberty enlightening the world. It functioned as a lighthouse from 1886 to 1902. At that time the U.S. Lighthouse Board was responsible for its operation. It was the first lighthouse to use electricity. The interior of the pedestal contains a bronze plaque inscribed with the sonnet "The New Colossus," by Emma Lazarus.
"Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, with conquering limbs astride from land to land; here at our sea-washed sunset gates shall stand a mighty woman with a torch, whose flame is the imprisoned lightning and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand glows world-welcome; her mild eyes command the air abridged harbor that twin cities frame. 'Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!' cries she with silent lips. 'Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of our teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamb beside .the golden door.""
The Liberty Bell gained iconic importance in the golden anniversary of Penn's charter, the quotation "Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto the inhabitants thereof." From Leviticus 25: 10, was particularly apt. The crack in the Liberty Bell, which rendered the bell un-ringable, appeared on Washington's birthday in 1846.
The rose was proclaimed the national flower of the United States of America by Congress on Sept. 23, 1986. On Oct. 7, 1986, then President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation in the Rose Garden at the White House. Reagan said during the signing. "For the love of man and woman, for the love of mankind and God, for the love of country. Americans who would speak the language of the heart do so with the rose."
Uncle Sam is a cartoon character that symbolizes the United States. Uncle Sam's costume is decorated with stars and stripes and a top hat. This costume was created in cartons in the 1830s. An 1800s clown. Dan Rice, made the costume popular. Congress passed a resolution which recognized Uncle Sam as a national symbol in 1961.

As we age, we become wiser from life experiences. Each stage of life has its own rewards and wonderful life lessons. Our desires and needs change as we age. It would be wonderful to have our youthful looks and energy; however with proper passion, diet, exercise and great health care, good looks and energy will continue to be a positive force.
Men often get better looking with age being called the silver foxes. Thank God women have make up, hairdressers and the possibility of great style with clothes.
Managing your own appearance and energy to make you feel comfortable in your own skin, and mayby enthusiasm, will give you favor and positive feedback with relationships.
People who survive accidents and disease to experience a rich older life, really enjoy the bonus years. With less family and financial responsibilities, older people often follow a dream. Dreams do not turn gray. This is a good time to relocate to a more suitable environment. One who enjoys the arts, books and young people often move to a college town. A person who is a sports fan has the time to follow their favorite teams. Many older people love to travel and enjoy new places and adventure. Often grandparents move near the beloved grandchildren to watch them grow up.
Growing older is empowering. Wisdom, time and money to spend all have the possibility of giving one a chance to volunteer and make a difference. Maturity gives one a chance to look in the rearview mirror of life and determine values, desires to accomplish in the last half of life and leave their own legacy. Zeal, zest and vitality fill lives that are passionate about life. Zeal is excitement with power. The new old who begin a new career with zeal never work because they love what they do. Zest, eager interests with enthusiasm, puts radiance on the face and personality of an older person to give positive energy and a youthful look.
Focus on the positive side of aging. Give your grand finale all the gusto you have. Do all the things you've always wanted to do. Enjoy the people in your life. Be happy, laugh and have fun. You will feel comfortable in your own skin and appreciate the time you have left.
A positive attitude will make becoming a member of the silver group a stepping stone and not a stumbling block. Along with silver hair, a silver lining to aging is enhanced by great habits. Aging is cumulative. The culminations of the little things we do everyday and the way we treat our bodies will determine how successfully we age. Good habits carry over to our aging years. Listen to your body. Keep those muscles in motion. Planned daily exercise helps us prevail by increasing our strength and resilience. Be active, attractive and healthy.
Consistently healthy eating adds fuel to life. Factoring in faith, hope and love will make life worth living.
Keep the stars in your eyes and the hope in your heart. Stay interested, motivated and involved.

What do you remember about Eunice Kennedy Shriver?
The thoughts running through my mind like a silver string are love for people with mental disabilities, enthusiasm, charisma, determination, drive, spiritually connected, politically involved and a devoted family member. Shriver is known best for her creation, Special Olympics, which sponsors competition for disabled athletes. Her passion for people with mental disabilities came from loving her mentally challenged sister, Rosemary.
This spirited lady lived through many tragedies. Her brother, Joseph Kennedy, 29, was killed in World War II. Four years later, her sister, Kathleen Kennedy, 28, died in a plane crash. President Kennedy, 46, is shot in Dallas, TX. While campaigning for president, brother Robert Kennedy is shot in California. Rose Kennedy dies at age 104. In 2005, Shriver lost her beloved sister, Rosemary Kennedy. In 2006, sister Patricia Kennedy Lawford died at age 82.
Married to Robert Sargent Shriver Jr., the couple had 5 children. She was a great role model for her children and 19 grandchildren. Eunice Kennedy Shriver’s indomitable spirit will always shine!

I noticed along the side of the road bright red lilies blooming, renewing the summer weary landscape. I remembered my grandmother always having bright orange day lilies growing in her yard all summer.
The September rains always triggered the dormant bulbs to the late bloomers, Oxblood lilies. Some gardeners call these beautiful blooms, schoolhouse lilies, because they never fail to bloom about the time the children start to school each fall. You may find these gorgeous blooms in neglected flower beds or at abandoned homesteads, because their deep roots enable the bulbs to withstand poor soil, severe temperatures and humidty. Each year the brilliant oxblood lilies hold their heads high on the slender foot-tall green stalks to shout, "I'm alive."
The indestructible spider lily also blooms, siren red, at the peak of the storm season, earning its name hurricane lily. The extended season of the tough nectar-bearing blooms draws beautiful butterflies to your garden. Butterflies tend to favor gardens that produce late-blooming lilies that provide nectar for adults and a place to lay eggs. We are thrilled when the Monarch butterflies choose our garden for a home.
Planting the oxblood lily bulbs now for the next fall season will give you hope, happiness and a hefty dose of courage! Looking at the stunning beauty of the oxblood lilies, my thoughts race to the baby boomers turning 50, that are entering the autumn of life. Like the fall lilies they are the independent, strong type.
I'm sure you have people in your circle of life who have taken the experiences of long life and bloomed into bright flowers. When you look into the mirror, do you say three-fourth of my life is over or is your attitude I will make goals and create the last quarter of my life extraordinary? The pinnacle of my life will be, full of joy, making a difference, leaving a legacy, blooming with elder wisdom and grace.
Let us spend our time focusing on hope for the future, not regrets of the past. Focus on our blessing not our wrinkles.

When we view the American Flag we think of liberty, and freedom. The American Flag flies on the moon, sits atop Mount Everest, is hurling out in space. Originally the American flag consists of seven red and six white stripes and 13 white stars representing the 13 original colonies, against a blue background, showing a new constellation among the nations of the world.
It is believed Betsy Ross created the first flag. Betsy Ross worshiped at Christ Church in Philadelphia. Her pew was next to Washington's. In June 1776 brave Betsy was a widow struggling to run her own upholstery business, which included sewing flags. George Washington showed her a crude design of the flag which included a six pointed star.
When Betsy demonstrated a five-pointed star with a single snip of the scissors, the committee which consisted of George Washington, Robert Morris, and Colonel George Ross, commissioned her to make the first American flag. On June 14,1777, the Continental Congress, seeking to promote national pride and unity, adopted the national flag. "Resolved; that the flag of the United States of America be thirteen stripes alternate red and white, that the union be thirteen stars, while in a blue field, representing a new constellation."
The media, newspapers, magazine, and people are exploding with negative conversations about America, 'and our Flag! Let's eliminate the negative and accentuate the positive. People and Freedom are the two main strong points of America.' Freedom motivates the American people to be creative. This creativity has the ability to bring order to chaos, and positive results from a negative situation.
John Maxwell said, "The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The leader adjusts the sails."
American's are now adjusting the sails to move America forward in the sea of life. As long as we have faith, love and character, we will prevail. This freedom to vote has been won th rough the vision and hard work by our forefathers. We cherish this right as we go to the polls each year. The divine spark of courage will bring American people to the forefront to proclaim what is right about America. We will work to right the things that have gone wrong, not just talk about them.
In the movie, "The Scent of a Woman" actor Al Pacino, said, "The worst thing you can do to a person is to amputate their spirit."
Americans will not allow the negative rhetoric of the news media to amputate our spirit or remove our flag from being America's signature. We will adjust our sail and head into the wind.
