Jan. 7, 2010 - Happy New Year © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
With our toes just over the threshold of 2010, we look forward with faith that this year will be a life of blessings. What is faith? “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of Things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1 KJV
“By faith, Noah, being warned of God of things, not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. Hebrews 11:7 KJV
As we fast forward with Christ into the future we will neither be imprisoned by the past, or fearful of the future. 2010 is the year to embrace the present and enjoy the journey.
JESUS said, “…I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” John 10:10 KJV
2010 IS A GREAT TIME TO BE A SENIOR CITIZEN! Focus is being placed on the bulging over 50 group. Barbara Mascio is the founder and president of Senior Approved Services, LLC. She is an active advocate for the right of all seniors to receive excellent care. She has developed the industry’s first consumer-driven survey process for the purpose of helping seniors avoid contracting with less than desirable companies.
USA TODAY warned “Heart attacks more common in winter.”
Shoveling snow may be a strain on the heart as the cold weather causes blood vessels to narrow. Now is a great time to dress warmly, and use common sense in your activites! If you need great books to read while sitting in front of a warm fire, Dr. Nieca Goldberg has written, WOMEN ARE NOT SMALL MEN – life-saving strategies for preventing and healing heart disease in women, and A COMPLETE GUIDE TO WOMEN’S HEALTH.
It’s possible to be heart healthy at any age! Eat heart healthy. God is so creative. The tomato is an example of eating 5 portions of fruit and vegetables each day. The heart and the tomato are both red and have 4 chambers. Grapes hang in clusters that have the shape of the heart. Each grape looks like a blood cell and all the research today show that grapes are also profound heart and blood vitalizing food.
Fish, lean meat, chicken may be added to our fresh fruits and vegetables for the heart healthy diet. Vitamins, particularly leafy greens can help avert heart attacks. Eating sweet potatoes, and other vegetables may help keep your eyes healthy by reducing the risk of cataracts, and macular degeneration. Vitamin C and E plus beta carotene and zinc boost the possibility of good eye sight. A balanced daily diet of 3 small meals and 3 healthy snacks will keep that red blood pumping through a healthy heart. The heart is the core of our being. So, we not only eat healthy but we love, live victoriously, and with zest!
Mark Middleton on the staff of the internet social site, GROWING BOLDER said, “The internet is the greatest bridge ever built.” During the winter, while you spend more time indoors, you would enjoy checking out Growing Bolder TV & Radio.
As you make your personal list of New Year’s resolutions, remember it’s never too late! I’m in the process of reinventing myself again. I’m working on a new book, a new look and plans to fly higher.
It’s amazing how our priorities change with age. My own New Year’s resolution – To strive for a deepening love affair with God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Also, to cultivate deeper relationships with my family and friends. Being a senior, I am more interested in relationships than things.
MY NEW YEARS WISH FOR YOU IS THAT YOU BECOME HEALTHIER, HAPPIER, AND HIP IN 2010!

Jan. 14, 2010 - Laughter Is The Best Medicine © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
Do you have the winter blues? Maybe it’s time to laugh. Laughing can make you happy. It’s both physic and physical pleasure. Laughter is sensual, stimulating and liberating. A response to someone’s laugh heightens the emotion. Laughing stimulates the Hormones that elevate moods.
Barbara Mascio, founder and president of senior approved services, is a professional clown, Jamdealie D. Light. She brings joy and laughter to those seniors that have isolated themselves within institutional settings. The 80 million baby boomers merging with the senior boom has created a huge need for elder care with infused laughter. Laughter attracts joy, releases negativity, and leads to miraculous cures.
Norman Cousins had been diagnosed with an incurable disease. He decided to heal himself. For 3 months all he did was watch funny movies and laugh, laugh, laugh. The disease left his body, and his doctor declared him well. Laughter really is the best medicine.
Psalms 126: 2-3... “Then our mouth was filled with laughter, And our tongue with singing. Then they said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them. The Lord has done great things for us. And we are glad.”
Laughter is the spice of life. Laughter works on the soul like medicine. Make a special effort to laugh today. I remember enjoying the Broadway Play Menopause. I laughed so hard my stomach was sore for days. That's what you call a belly laugh! If you determine to find the light side of life, and begin to giggle and laugh, your mood will move up! Spontaneous laughter bubbling from the soul is the music of life.
Laughter reduces pain and allows us to tolerate discomfort. It reduces blood sugar levels, increasing glucose tolerance in diabetics and none diabetics alike. It helps your blood vessels function better, causing them to relax and expand increasing blood flow. Laughing is good for your heart and brain, two organs that require the steady flow of oxygen carried in the blood. It offsets the impact of mental stress. Laughter improves your job performance, especially if your work depends on creativity and solving complex problems. Its role in intimate relationships is vastly underestimated, and it really is the glue of good marriages. It establishes a positive emotional climate and a sense of connection between two people. It synchronizes the brains of speaker and listener so that they are emotionally attuned.
As you enjoy your day, choose the amusing! It’s your life! You have the gift of choice...
Choose to laugh! Choose to watch a funny movie. Choose to laugh with friends. Choose to laugh when times are frustrating. Choose to laugh for healing. Choose to be happy.
I love the humerous story told to me by Dr. Ron Eaker, author of HOLY HORMONES.
A 90 year old man went to his doctor for a checkup, and left after being told, he was in excellent health for his age, except for a slight hearing loss. The doctor saw him on the street the next day arm and arm with a beautiful young lady, and asked him incredulously, “What are you doing?” The old fella replies, “Doc, yesterday you told me to get a hot mama and be careful!” The doctor shook his head and cried, “NO, I said you have a heart murmmer, so be careful!”

Jan. 21, 2010 - New Visions © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
Once you were a young whiper-snapper, How about now? Are you an "I-take-a-napper?" Do you hold onto your youth 59 tightly you get cramps in your hands? On this road oflife, have you turned down wrinkle Street and into driveway of middle-age bulge?
At 80 years old. Moses of the Bible was just getting started into the most exciting time of his life. He was called into leadership when the voice of God spoke through a burning bush, asking him to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt. Moses found new purpose for his life.
"And Moses was an hundred and twenty years old when he died; his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated" Deuteronomy 34:7 (KJV)
Embracing this time of middle-aged change, let's think more about what we gain and not the tosses. Sure, you may have lost hair, waistline and memory, but gained self-time, wisdom and a new appreciation of life.
After 50 years of life, you have become a treasure. YOU may be a matriarch or patriarch to live, learn and love with four generations alive in your family, Who is your burning bush? who is your mentor? It is now time to pass the torch and become a mentor for a younger person, if you need a new vision, a new dream, I recommend you read, "The Power Years" by Dr. Ken Dychtwald.
This book is a user's guide for the rest of your life. It teaches the older generation how to pursue their dream, deepen their relationships and achieve financial freedom.

Jan. 28, 2010 - The Fabulous Fabric Of Life © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
In our lives the threads of God, Family, Friends, Country, Love, Life and the pursuit of happiness entwine into fabulous fabrics of living. There will be sad times and glad times! The interweaving of these times will create a strong multicolored fabric.
Jesus said, “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” John 10:10 KJV
There are times in life when the wrinkles in the fabric of life can be good. For instance, 2007 is in a peculiar wrinkle in time when older can be better. Father Time and Mother Nature do not put on us an inevitable sentence of being old. Living old is a choice.
Third Age International proclaims the First Age: Childhood; Second Age: Family and Career; and Third Age: The rest of your Life. (This is a time in life to follow your passions, dreams, and give back to society.)
Every Fabulous Fabric has its own uniqueness. As you age never lose sight of your own uniqueness. You’re goal is to be the best you. You do not want to be someone else. Many Fabulous Fabrics feels so divine and have a mesmerizing shine. Many Fabulous after 50 people also has a mesmerizing shine.
“If only you would prepare your heart and lift up your hands to him in prayer! Get rid of your sins and leave all iniquity behind you, Then your face will brighten in innocence.” Job 11:17 New Living Bible
Deidre Scherer produces art by working in fabric and thread. She has addressed the issues of aging and mortality by building a series of images based on elders and mentors in her community. Scherer notes, “Families and friends who support a loved one at the end of life witness the most powerful of life’s events. These are images of death that present dying as a natural part of life and that start a cultural dialogue and deeper reflection.”
Teddy Roosevelt felt the texture of the fabric of life when he said, “Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorius triumphs, even thou checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much, nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.

Feb. 4, 2010 - We are Prisoners of Hope © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™ Are you feeling insecure? March 20, our 4 year anniversary of the War reminds us that our world is unsafe. How do we cope with an ever changing life? From the Living Bible, I keep Phillippians 4:6 in my heart. “Don’t worry about anything; instead pray about everything; tell God your needs and don’t forget to thank Him for his answers.”
Calvin Coolidge said, “If you see ten troubles coming down the road, you can be sure that nine will run in the ditch before they reach you.”
Worry is counterproductive. The word worry comes from a Greek word meaning, “to divide the mind.” The worried mind is torn, worn and has no peace. Worry muddles the mind just as drugs, alcohol, and disease. Worry is an inside job. Worry could be compared to a rocking chair. You want get anywhere, but you will have something to do.
While preparing for Easter a few weeks away, I though about the chicken and the egg, which brings new life. Did Jesus raise chickens? He said, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God’s messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let me.” Matthew 23:37 The Living Bible.
I grew up on a cotton farm and my mom raised a few chickens to provide the family with eggs for breakfast, chicken for dinner and barter for the rolling store.. The vision of a hen gathering her brood of babies under her wings and covering them with her feathers when a dog came near or they were in harms way, is as clear in my mind today, as if it was flashed on a super sized movie screen.
I understand Jesus desires to protect us as the mother hen protects her chicks. Psalm 91:1-5 KJV “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. (One must be ‘up close and personal’ to be in the shadow of the Almighty.)”
“I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God: in Him will I trust.”
“Surely He shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.”
“He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.”
“Thou shalt not be afraid…”
I’m glad Jesus used the metaphor of the mother hen. During this time of war and terrorist threats, we look to Him for peace. As we meet each day and its challenges while traveling through shock, anger, loss and fear of the unknown, we know that whatever happens, with God, our future is filled with hope.

Feb. 11, 2010 - Sex Is God's Idea © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
Romance is the heart of the universe! Jesus is the bridegroom, and believers are the Bride of Christ. The family of God is the cosmic family, kin to the trinity. The cosmic family is the salt of the earth and the light of the world.
Matthew 5: 13-14, “The bridegroom said to his bride, “Ye are the salt of the earth, but if the salt have lost his savor, wherewith shall it be salted…?” “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.”
Many couples during midlife, are deeply in love, and enjoy great sex.
Several churches are sponsoring married couple retreats, encouraging spouses to enjoy lots of hot sex. Intimacy fills the emotional tank with love, and draws a couple into a closer relationship. Transparency, trust, and love seals a relationship for eternity. The best thing a senior couple will do for their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren is love each other.
The interaction of femininity and masculinity adds zest to life. As long as the ageless couple stays fit and lit, it hardly matters the number of years they have lived. When there is exciting sexual chemistry, life again become young. Sex is wired into our DNA. It is the most powerful force in the human race.
A senior woman preparing herself for a special date with her husband turns into a Goddess. She looks agelessly magnificent. A radiant smile accompanying a flirtatious posture will complete her attraction. As she honors her husband with undivided attention, she enjoys the pleasures of monogamous loving sex. It is a gift from God.
And the senior men will say with John G. Diefenbaker, “While there is snow on the roof, it doesn’t mean the fire has gone out in the furnace.”
THE HOT NEWS: No kids in the house, no pregnancy tests, time and desire to fill the senior couple with bodily closeness gives excitement and thrill to our grand finale. Couples who feel good, look good, and are rejoicing will have no problem being attractive and available.
Many couples over 75 are into overdrive. If you were sexy at 25, it is likely you are sexy at 75. The old adage, “use it or loose it” is certainly true with our sexuality. Researchers, beginning with Kinsey in the 1940’s indicate that older people are sexier and enjoy sex more than previously thought. The dimensions of adventure in the physical sexual act are heightened by the bonding of sexual partners. The question could be asked, “Are sexy people healthier, or are healthy people sexier?”
As I travel around the country I find many senior couples acting like teen-agers. I will call them keen-agers! Couples are going to the gym, looking fit, fabulous and feisty. The keen-agers are blissful as they hold hands, frolic on the beach, or go to the kitchen, participating together created a sumptuous meal.
“Dr. Bernard D. Starr and Dr. Marcella Bakur Weiner found in their research that men and women continue to be sexy and sensual in later live.
The Starr-Weiner Report, reported: 97 percent like sex; 75 percent think sex now feels as good as or better than it did when they were young. 72 percent are satisfied by their sexual experiences; 80 percent that sex is good for your health. (1)
(1) Age Wave; Dr. Ken Dychtwald, Ph. D. and Joe Flower, Copyright 1989, Jeremy P. Tarcher, INC, Los Angeles page 44-45
Sex is God’s idea. He is happy when you enjoy it. Todd Friel, host of the syndicated radio show "Way Of The Master," says,” sexual intimacy was created as a taste of what it’s like to be in ‘right relationship’ with God. (2)
Most senior Christian couples consider sexual activity a natural part of life. Passion is the heart of a sexual relationship.

Feb. 18, 2010 - 7 Rules To Age By © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™ 1. FAITH in a higher power! When hard times come into our lives, it’s important to experience a mature faith. An intimate time alone with Bible, and prayer each day will bring a feeling of being “up-close and personal” with God.
2. FUN is fine. God gave us the pleasurable experience of laughter, free spirit, and joy to dilute the difficult times of life. Are you aging Sunnyside up?
3. FAMILY is a support group that gives us strength. The bonds are strong, giving us courage to live life to the fullest. Make each day a banquet. Don’t take one breathe for granted.
4. FOREVER YOUNG is a positive attitude of longevity. Movie star Ester Williams is still swimming and a business owner at 85. Negative expectations about aging may be self-fulfilling and downright dangerous to your health.
5. FORWARD THINKING is always a plus when putting changes into place that will make your aging life better. Life is so full of possibilities, it becomes an adventure. Don’t put limits on yourself. Success is doing something you love. You don’t find yourself. You create yourself.
6. FABULOUS ATTITUDE will fuel your life with passion and power. The one thing we have control over is our attitude.
7. FIND FRIENDS: A true friend is always there for you, in good times and bad. Successful people make everyone in their circle of life, friends! A friend is like a rainbow always there for you after the storm!

Feb. 25, 2010 - Worry Zapper © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
“Finish every day and be done with it…You have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in: forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day: you shall begin it…serenely, and with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense.” ...Ralph Waldo Emerson
With the economy slow down, the environmental crisis, and wars added to the stress of everyday life, many people worry. Worry is like rocking in a rocking chair, you rock but you get nowhere.
The Bible tells us in Philippians 4: 6 (modern language) “Entertain no worry, but under all circumstances let your petitions be made known before God by prayer and pleading along with thanksgiving.”
Fear can be paralyzing as well as fatal. There is an old story about Nick Sitzman, who worked on a train crew, a notorious worrier and feared the worst about everything. One day the crew planned a birthday party for the foreman. Everyone left the train for the party except Nick Sitzman who was working in the refrigerator boxcar.
Accidentally Nick was left locked in the refrigerator boxcar.
When Nick realized he was locked in he screamed, hollered, and banged on the walls, and door. Finally, he found a knife and wrote on the wooded floor, “It’s so cold, my body is getting numb. If I could just go to sleep. These may be my last words.” The next morning the crew found Nick Sitzman dead although the temperature in the refrigeration boxcar was 55 degrees.
During this negative atmosphere of the media, the feeling that the world that we have known is crumbling around us, it’s time to create new ideas, allow God to work through each of us to renew, reinvent, and revitalize our lives, community, county, and world.
“Instead of weeping when a tragedy occurs in a songbird’s life, it sings away its grief. I believe we could well follow the pattern of or feathered friend.” Robert S. Walker
As America goes green, we are all recycling. Aging Americans are also recycling themselves. We are widening our horizons, pushing the envelope of life, taking calculated risk for higher goals, getting excited about life adventures, trying new things, and making new friends. Recycling creates synergy, and energy pushing life beyond normal into the extraordinary.
Known for her personalized mail order gifts, in 1951, Lillian Vernon launched a catalog business that started in her kitchen with $2,000 of wedding money. Lillian Vernon became the first female business woman to be listed on the American Stock Exchange with 5300 employees and $287 million in revenue. This pioneer woman is humorous and strong. She is not a worrier.
With Jesus on the throne of our lives, we have faith to let go and let God. Replacing worry with faith and fear with hope! “The spirit of the Lord is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound.
To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God to comfort all that mourn;
To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.” Isaiah 61:1-3 KJV

Mar. 4, 2010 - The Teachings of Experience © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
Making the most of the second half is a life-long commitment to the teachings of experience, that stimulate your passion, dreams, and faith to achieve the greatest return and ignite the Spirit within.
I laugh at the word "Retirement." I intend to keep my goal focused to keep America moving and off the couch. The flame of the future is a new mental posture, a new, more positive Era for aging. Age doesn't dull one's luster, because the shine comes from within. The blooming baby boomer's passion has been ignited to be educated, entertained, and empowered by the Holy Spirit. Mid-life women are remarkable women. Teachers for future generations, they celebrate challenges of conquering stereotypes, and barriers surrounding aging.
Decide the goals and objectives that you must reach along the way. Create measurements to determine your direction. Decide what you want your life to stand for. Celebrate your successes. Give and receive love. Longevity comes from a sense of community. All great works are those that console, inspire and benefit others. Be forgiving. Forgive yourself, first; then develop the habit of forgiving others. Remember, we are all doing the best we can to solve the problems we see with the tools we have at the time.
Practice Gratitude. Optimism springs from gratitude. The ability to be thankful for the past and present permits us to be hopeful for the future. Develop acceptance. Life exists as we see it and also as we envision it. Accept where you are today. Also, accept that you can grow beyond past disappointments and embrace the potential of the future. Develop a relationship with God. The healthiest, happiest people recognize the vastness of the intricacy of this universe. To wonder at the creation is a step toward honoring the Creator. Your desires fuel your destiny. Who you are at the very core of your being will fuel your purpose. Construct a destiny worthy of your best efforts and use these tools.
We are the President of our own future, and the star of our own life. Be intimate with God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit through prayer, worship, and the reading of His love letter to us the Bible to become the person He created in you..
"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path." Psalms 119:105 KJV
This intimacy with the triune God will empower you to re-passion life to add purpose and meaning; re-think options to add a sense of contribution; reconnect with community to enhance self-quality; re-focus lifestyle for an energetic future; re-assess values for life security; re-design health for body, mind and spirit; re-equip career for hands on experiences and teaching.
Have a fabulous and sensational second half of life.
"And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it." Psalms 90:17 KJV

Mar. 11, 2010 - Participate In The Dance Of Change © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
Do you remember when a web site was a spider’s home? You are considered the older generation if you first think of a rodent when you hear the word mouse. If you told me twenty years ago that I would write this column with my hand on a mouse, I would have thought you were from the planet Mars.
How amazing that our great postal service is now called “snail mail.” Communication with e-mail is so much faster. When I was a child, RAM referred to a male sheep, and a BYTE left teeth prints. Memory was what grandma had lost. My grandchildren work with the computer with great ease, while I struggle with the mastery of computer skills.
Come surf with me the crest of the “AGE WAVE,” into the “AGE AGE,” which is the beach of longevity and creative change. It’s imperative that the over 50 crowd participate in the dance of change in order to celebrate the grand finale of life. Remember, today is the youngest day of the rest of your life.
Aging is constant change like shifting shadows. The shades of change can be exciting, magic, and fruitful as we focus on the positive effects. Age may become a building dance of intrigue and new horizons.
The kaleidoscope of change brings on new vitality. Jesus said in the LIVING BIBLE, John 10:10, “My purpose is to give life, in all its fullness.”
Our world is changing so fast, at times we feel as if our lives are in a rocket zooming into outer space. Enjoying the ultimate relaxing summer will give new energy to participate in the dance of life’s changes. The freedom of summer makes life a celebration.
Memorial Day ushers in the grand Summer Season. You’ll be grilling and chilling at back yard barbeque parties, with cool-down drinks and breezy suppers. Travel, vacations, cruises, give new experiences, a chance to meet new people and explore new places.

Mar. 18, 2010 - What Do You Think ? © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
“…For as a man thinks, so is he.” Proverbs 23:7
As we travel this road of life, our desire is to accelerate. We feel urgency that each moment is precious. Our souls reach out for rich relationships, beauty, music, laughter, fun, meaningful work, and a spiritual connection with God.
“Everything that’s coming into your life you are attracting into your life. And it’s attracted to you by virtue of the images you’re holding in your mind. It’s what you’re thinking. Whatever is going on in your mind you are attracting to you.” ...Bob Proctor
We are what we think. We choose to be positive or negative, enthusiastic or dull, active or passive. Positive thinking and a positive attitude propels each person to success and happiness: however, it’s impossible to feel good with negative thoughts. Life experiences have taught the people living in the third age of life to control their thoughts with mood shifters.
What are your mood shifters? ---- Music, (listen, sing, dance); Social activities, (place yourself into a social atmosphere of your choice); Beauty, (nature, flowers, sunsets); Work, (if you have a passion for your work, it will be fun.) LOVE, (God is love, the highest frequency.)
As I interview people over 50, their greatest desires are Love, freedom, and power. What you love, what you think, creates your reality.

Mar. 25, 2010 - Lady Bird's Heart, Felt The Bloom Of Life © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
Lady Bird Johnson traveled the road of faith. During her life her heart felt the bloom of life. She lived large. At 94, she traveled the colorful, flowered interstate to where it met the streets of gold. We will always remember her as the person who beautified our nation with flowers. Her love for the environment now blooms each spring and summer in a carpet of flowers in the roadside parks, along busy highways, and city street planters.
As I travel the country speaking, promoting positive aging, I am reminded of Lady Bird every time I enjoy lovely flowers along the interstate highways. I especially love the red clover.
Her late husband, President Lyndon Johnson, said, “When Lady Bird drove by, the tulips bowed to her.”
President George W. Bush said of her at her death – “President Johnson once called her a woman of ideals, principles, intelligence, and refinement. She remained so throughout their life together, and in the many years given to her afterwards.”
In 2002 the oldest living first lady wrote in her diary, “My heart found its home long ago in the beauty, mystery, order and disorder of the flowering earth. I wanted future generations to be able to savor what I had all my life.”
Lady Bird leaves a legacy of deep devotion to her family, (the late President Lyndon Johnson, two daughters, Linda Robb, and Luci, 7 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren); and the environment.
A few years ago, I attended my local book club luncheon. The hostess for the luncheon in her home contacted all the living first ladies and asked for their favorite recipe. She prepared all these favorite dishes for our lunch.
Lady Bird sent her CHOCOLATE NUT DROP COOKIES. May I share her recipe with you?
1 cup butter I teaspoon soda 1 teaspoon salt 2 cups light brown sugar 4 squares chocolate ½ cup eggs (2or3) 2 cups walnuts, chopped 1 cup milk 2 teaspoons vanilla 3 cups cake flour
Cream butter; then add the sifted brown sugar gradually and cream until light and fluffy. Add the well-beaten eggs. Cream - Sift together the dry ingredients and add with milk alternately and mix until smooth. Add melted chocolate, chopped nuts, and vanilla. Fold into mixture. Drop by teaspoonfuls on oiled baking sheet one inch apart. Bake at 375 degrees for 12-15 minutes. Makes six dozen cookies.
She was certainly a virtuous woman, and her life is to be celebrated. The Bible, Proverbs 31: 10–31 gives us a portrait of Lady Bird Johnson’s life.
“Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.” Proverbs 31:10 KJV
“Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that fears the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.” Proverbs 31:30,31 KJV
Our beloved Lady Bird Johnson certainly exemplified the woman who aged outside the box with power, style, and vitality.

Apr. 1, 2010 - Grandparents Live On After Death © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
It’s amazing how memories are indelible on a young child’s mind. I grew up living next door to my father’s mom and dad. Spring brings back memories of my mama Todd, pampering beautiful potted plants on her front porch. She loved planting her spring vegetable garden. She knew the seeds planted in the fresh plowed ground would yield fruits and vegetables for her large extended family. Of course she also made pear preserves for the breakfast table from the huge pear tree in the yard.
She kept a washed clean flour sack hanging low on the wall so all the grandchildren could reach in and grab a tea cake as they ran around the spacious old farm house. On Sundays and holidays her large kitchen table was always full of southern country cooking. Of course fried chicken remained the main course. The grand finale was her specialty, Chocolate or coconut cake, with homemade ice cream. Everyone always expected her delicious fruit fried pies.
After church, celebrating the resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday was a grand day around Mama Todd’s table. The thirteen grandchildren got fidgety as our Paw Paw who stuttered, prayed a very long prayer blessing our food and thanking God for Jesus our savior. My grandparents enjoyed many talents and had much love for their grandchildren! They were continual Bible students. Mama Todd played the piano, and Paw Paw sang like a mocking bird.
My Mama Todd reminds me of the virtuous woman in Proverbs 31:13,20, “She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands…She stretcheth our her hand to feed the poor; yes, she reacheth forth her hand to the needy.” As we grow older, a sight, sound, word, song, even smells, will create a mental memory that is so precious to relive. I learned from my Mama Todd how to enjoy simple things in life!
Now that I have 10 grandchildren of my own, I understand the love connection! Playing with the babies, watching the young children in their Easter frocks, hunting colored eggs in the yard, and enjoying the chatter and laughter fills my emotional tank with joy. The older grandchildren flowering with the beauty of youth, reminds me that my life will continue after my death.
Easter is a time to rejoice. Jesus is risen!
“My grandchildren make me realize I will live on after my death.” Constance Baker Motley - 1921... Wife, mother; state senator, borough president; civil rights lawyer and Senior U.S. District Judge - one child, two grandchildren.

Apr. 8, 2010 - Sowing Seeds of Kindness © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
Spring is a perfect time to sow seeds of kindness in the garden of life. If we could visualize the full extent of kindness to lift the sprit, we would scatter more kindness seeds. A kind word or deed, a look, touch or special smile casts a magic spell of love to the recipient.
Albert Schweitzer said, "Constant kindness can accomplish much. As the sun makes ice melt, kindness causes misunderstanding, mistrust, and hostility to evaporate."
My mom was a wife, mother, homemaker, and the major role for women of her generation. When she experienced living alone in her later years, she chose kindness as her career. She loved to bake fabulous homemade pound cakes and layered yellow cakes covered with chocolate fudge icing. The aroma of the baking cakes filling her home, and the anticipation of sharing gave her intense joy. Most people enjoy freshly baked cakes. She learned if she cooked two cakes per day, she could make two social calls and be welcomed with enthusiasm.
Taking a freshly baked cake to someone who was ill or sad became her favorite kindness. She often would visit with her sick friend, and enjoy a piece of cake and a cup of coffee. Along with her cake she served words of cheer. Her doctor, dentist, banker, and church socials could always expect her delicious cakes. This act of kindness brought her favor. She became known as THE CAKE LADY. She also baked cakes for anyone celebrating, a birthday, graduation, new job, baby, or wedding. Every holiday when the family gathered, her cakes were the favorite food. Praise abounded, as we enjoyed her delicacies. She became very excited about baking cakes for the family, especially Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. After her death, I realized that was the time she shined, was praised, and given hugs.
I remember the time she took 5 of her great granddaughters into her cheerful, cozy kitchen and taught them how to bake her cakes. After the baking lesson, flour had been spilled on the flour, great granddaughter's dresses, and in their long flowing hair. Giggles and happiness filled the air.
The Bible says, "Be not weary in well doing," Why? That which you sow, you will also reap; that which you send out, comes back; and what you give you get. An abundance of kindness begins with one simple "kernel".
A few years ago a movie, PAY IT FORWARD, touched my soul. All kindnesses were passed forward to the next person in one's life who needed kindness. What a great practice for us today in our everyday life as we plant seeds of kindness into other people in our garden of life.

Apr. 15, 2010 - Blooming Boomers © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
April showers are blooming May flowers. My showy, purple and pink, funnel-shaped petunias are at the peak of their beauty. Their fragrance fills me with joy as I watch from my deck the yellow finch enjoying the bird feeders on the lawn.
We plant seeds or small plants and watch them grow into beautiful flowers. It also takes fertilization, pruning, and proper watering. Especially with roses it takes patience to allow them to grow into full bloom.
With almost 80 million baby boomers riding the “Age Wave,” living longer and better, they are blooming into a new generation of ageless people. I call them the blooming boomers. Explosion of knowledge, innovation, and passion is allowing them to grow into full bloom as they approach 50 and beyond.
These blooming boomers are causing a sea change in the way we age. They are aging outside the box with power, style and vigor. A generation ago, people begin to slow down at the big 5-0, and retire at 65. Today the boomers are blooming, starting new careers, following a passion, reinventing themselves, growing spiritually, mentally, and socially.
The boomers are blooming because this is the best time in history to age. Celebrating life after 50 has become colorful, and fragrant with possibilities. The blooming boomers are feeling divine with a mesmerizing shine, because they are discovering the art of living well.
Jesus said, “…I have come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” John 10:10.
Paul tells us in Philippians 4:4 KJV “Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.”
Alabama’s First Lady, Mrs. Patsy Riley, a blooming boomer, a dedicated Christian wife, mother of 4, and one of the most active, compassionate, and gracious women I’ve met. She is a Steel Magnolia who wears many hats very well.
“Who can find a virtuous and capable wife? She is worth more than precious rubies. Her husband can trust her, and she will greatly enrich his life. She will not hinder him but help him all her life.
She finds wood and flax and busily spins it. She is like a merchant’s ship: she brings her food from afar. She gets up before dawn to prepare breakfast for her household and plan the day’s work for her servant girls. She goes out to inspect a field and buys it; and her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She is energetic and strong, a hard worker. She watches for bargains; her lights burn late into the night. Her hands are busy spinning thread, her fingers twisting fiber. She extends a helping hand to the poor and opens her arms to the needy. She has no fear of winter for her household because all of them have warm clothes. She quilts her own bedspreads. She dresses like royalty in gowns and finest cloth.
Her husband is well known, for he sits in the council meeting with the other civic leaders.
She makes belted linen garments and sashes to sell to the merchants. She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs with no fear of the future. When she speaks, her words are wise, and kindness is the rule when she gives instructions. She carefully watches all that goes on in her household and does not have to bear the consequences of laziness.
Her children stand and bless her. Her husband praises her. There are many virtuous and capable women in the world, but you surpass them all!
Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last, but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised. Reward her for all she has done. Let her deeds publicly declare her praise.” Proverbs 31:10-30 The Living Bible

Apr. 22, 2010 - Be A Burning Bush © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
While searching his life, Dr. Ward Tanneberg, author of "SEASONS OF THE SPIRIT," realized that Moses of the Bible had become his mentor.
At 80 years old, Moses was just getting started into the most exciting time of his life. It’s better to be 80 years young than to be 40 years old.
Moses was called into leadership when the voice of God spoke through a burning bush. After 40 years of living in the wilderness near Sinai, the mountain of God, he was tending the sheep one day and a burning bush caught his attention. “Suddenly, the angel of the Lord appeared to him as a blazing fire in a bush. Moses was amazed because the bush was engulfed in flames, but it didn’t burn up. ‘Amazing,’ Moses said to himself. Why isn’t that bush burning up? I must go over and see.’
Exodus 3:2,3 NEW LIVING TRANSLATION, BIBLE
When Moses walked over to the burning bush God told Moses to take off his sandals, because the ground on which he was standing was Holy Ground.
Through the burning bush God told Moses he was sending him to Pharaoh of Egypt to deliver His people the Israelites into their own spacious land flowing with milk and honey.
Moses was an old man who got a new vision! He became passionate about life as he discovered fresh meaning and purpose. Passion is flammable. It ignites high goals, new dreams, abounding energy.
This mission from God extended Moses’s life to 120 years. “And Moses was an hundred and twenty years old when he died; his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated.” Deuteronomy 34:7 KJV
Like Moses you may be over 65 years of age. Two-thirds of all those who have ever lived to age 65 are alive today. What an army of profound wisdom as each one becomes a burning bush or a mentor for others.
A mentor according to Webster, “A wise and trusted teacher guide and friend.”
The U.S. Government has projected that the number of elderly in America will double in the first two decades of the 21st century (by 2030). We are standing on Holy Ground to become mentors proclaiming that after 65 years of life you have become a treasure.
You may be a matriarch, or patriarch to live, learn, and love with 4 generations in your family. It is now time for you to become a burning bush for the younger generation. It only takes a spark to get a fire going. The fire of ageless living is to be yourself, engaged in life, empowered to practice the presence and passion of God. I consider life after 65, bonus years. I have the attitude, it’s now or never to make a difference in someone’s life, community, state, nation and world.
Moses taught us that life is truly inexhaustible! Believing we are standing on Holy Ground, marching to eternal life with Jesus Christ as our savior, we rejoice.

Apr. 29, 2010 - Be Radiant With The Radiance Of Jesus © By Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
It’s your time to shine. Did you know there are scripture that encourage us to be radiant? Psalms 34: 5 The Revised Standard, “Look to Him, and be radiant.” Have you thought about the meaning of radiance? - (1) shining brightly, (2) filled with light; bright, (3) showing joy, well being; beaming as a radiant smile, (4) radiant energy.
Brides that I have observed are radiant on their wedding day. Christian’s are the Bride of Christ. It thrills me when I see a radiant Christian who lights up the life of others. The Bride of Christ should radiant beams of light, laughter, and love.
“Those who are wise – the people of God – shall shine as brightly as the sun’s brilliance, and those who turn many to righteousness, will glitter like stars forever.” Daniel 12:3 THE LIVING BIBLE
The radiance of Hollywood would be dull compared to God’s children as their light covers the world.
“And let the beauty of God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.” Psalms 90:17 KJV
As we mature in wisdom, aging Christians radiate beauty and boldness. Everyone is beautiful in their own unique way. You are of great worth at any age, because God made you special. He planted inside you your own DNA. You are filled with seeds of talent. God designed you for a special plan in life. He has planted seeds of greatness in you.
Henry Ford said, “You can do anything if you have enthusiasm. (God within) Enthusiasm is the yeast that makes your hopes rise to the stars. Enthusiasm is the spark in your eye, the swing in your gate, the grip of your hand, the irresistible surge of your will, and your energy to execute your ideas. Enthusiasts are fighters, they have fortitude, they have staying qualities. Enthusiasm is at the bottom of all progress. With it there is accomplishment, with out it, there are only alibis!
Nehemiah 8:10... After Ezra, the scribe read the law of Moses to the Israelites, he said, “Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions into them for whom nothing is prepared, for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
Life is precious! We live this life on earth with ups, and downs; sorry and gladness; success and failure; health and sickness. It’s important to remember Ezra’s message, whatever happens we have hope in Jesus. Celebrate life while sharing with our fellow man. Our real joy comes from the Lord and that is our radiance! The special savored moments of fun, intimacy, pleasure, celebration, give us a glimpse of what heaven will be like. Joy is rooted in the heart. Joy is a very good feeling, happiness, and delight. Joy takes the friction out of life.

May 6, 2010 - National Day Of Prayer © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
Praying in one accord, sends a powerful message to God! As Americans unite in prayer, May 6, 2010, for THE NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER, supernatural power will be released from the throne of God.
What is prayer? Prayer is simply a conversation with God! Luke 11, one of Jesus’s disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray…”and he said unto them. When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name, They kingdom come. They will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.”
Jesus didn’t say, when you pray say “My Father,” no, he used the plural “Our Father.”
God is my Father, your Father, and our Father. “…The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous (person) availeth much.” James 5:16 KJV
As we prepare to pray as a nation in one accord, it’s important for each individual to humble himself. A powerful way is to pray with the scripture. For instance one could pray Psalm 139:23-24, “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
To prepare yourself for prayer for the nation, I suggest you take 3 minutes of silent prayer to connect with God and accept his grace for your unforgiven sin. God’s love letter to us, tells us in II Chronicles 7:14 KJV, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways: then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”
Praying in one accord empowers God to pour out His blessings on us as a Nation. As Dr. Charles R. Swindoll prays for our nation aloud, Americans will pray silently with him, sending powerful words to the throne of God.
Please keep a copy of this prayer to pray with Dr. Swindoll.
PRAYER: “Almighty God, we pause to reflect on your character as we seek wisdom for such a time as this. In these unsafe days, You remain all-powerful and able to protect. In these uncertain times, You remain all-knowing, leading us aright; In the unprecedented events we’re facing, You remain absolutely sovereign. Our times are in Your hands. Therefore, our dependence on You, is total, not partial …our need for Your forgiveness is constant. …our gratitude for Your grace is profound. …our love for You is deep.
We ask that You guard and guide our President and all who serve the people of these United States. May uncompromising integrity mark their lives. We also ask that you unite us as truly ‘one nation, Under God.’ May genuine humility return to our ranks. And may that blend of integrity and humility heal our land.
In our Lord’s name we pray, Amen.

May 13, 2010 - Wings Of Paradise © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™ With the arrival of summer and the beautiful awakening of nature, we are delighted with the feeling of new life. We get a new appreciation of our world’s natural environment. We experience new hope. We feel God’s presence.
When my book, FABULOUS AFTER 50, was published, I was honored to participate in the AGE WAVE CONFERENCE in Toronto Canada sponsored by FOCUS ON THE FAMILY. This conference gave the participants cutting edge information on the almost 80 million baby boomers beginning to reach 50. If you are 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, or 100 it is your time to shine. We are called the NEW OLD. We are living longer, better and enjoying these bonus years of life. It is our time to fly like a butterfly.
Watching the beautiful, multicolored monarch butterfly flit from flower to flower, my spirit lightened. The soundless and unhurried movements of God’s gorgeous creature gave the garden a sense of relaxation and timelessness. The dappled sunlight danced on the fragile wings, inspiring me. My thoughts were caught up in the metamorphosis of this beautiful creature: from a tightly wrapped cocoon, to a large swollen body with tiny shriveled wings, and finally to an exquisite mature butterfly.
We could parallel the Christian life with the life of a butterfly. In the cocoon stage, we are born again and Christ wraps us in His blanket of love. Then we become hungry for God’s voice and begin to study the Bible, communicate with Him through prayer, and begin to grow spiritually. Like the butterfly in its swollen body/shriveled wings stage, through the struggle and pain of growth, in God’s perfection and timing, we become mature Christian - beautiful like a monarch butterfly.
While visiting Toronto, I was treated with a trip to the Canada side of Niagara Falls, and a unique live butterfly conservatory. The Falls displayed God’s beautiful creation as snow was falling over the vast nature wonder. While viewing this spectacular event an exquisite rainbow appeared over the falling water. The live butterfly conservatory, indoor tropical garden and unique displays of butterfly’s was named WINGS OF PARADISE. The curator of this magnificent world of butterflies told us he started collecting butterflies when his father and mother brought a present of a butterfly nature kit home from a trip when he was 8 years old.
The butterfly is a symbol of FREEDOM, LOVE, FRIENDSHIP AND NEW LIFE. Think about all the songs, art, collector’s items, and threads of butterflies woven into the fabric of our American life.
At the end of the tour, the curator of WINGS OF PARADISE read to our group the poem, ALWAYS HAVE A DREAM, by Amanda Bradley.
Always Have A Dream...
Forget about the days when it’s been cloudy, but don’t forget your hours in the sun. Forget about the times you’ve been defeated, But don’t forget the victories you’ve won.
Forget about mistakes That you can’t change now. But don’t forget the times your luck has turned.
Forget about the days When you’ve been lonely, But don’t forget the friendly smiles you’ve seen.
Forget about the plans That didn’t seem to work out right, But don’t forget to Always have a dream.
During these lazy, hazy days of summer when you’re enjoying a rainbow after a rain, or a butterfly flitting from flower to flower, remember to dream big dreams.

May 20, 2010 - What Will Your Life Colors Be? © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
Recently, listening to my XM radio in my car, I turned to channel 71, jazz. The name of the station is Watercolors. The morning talk show host asked the question, “what color are you feeling this morning?” I thought about that question and knew that I felt like the color red. It was a red hot summer day, I was praying to a red hot Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and I was wearing red shoes.
What color are you today? Are you in a blue mood, or a cheerful mood? Are you feeling euphoric or melancholy? The one thing we have the ability to control is our attitude, our mood. Is your mood black or colorful? It’s your choice! I’m inspired when I enjoy the beauty of nature.
“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth His handwork.” Psalm 19:1 KJV
I look at the universe and I’m amazed that we have a God that loves color. This earth is filled with wonderful colorful creatures, fish, flowers, plant life, seas, and sky. What a magnificent array of color. Life would be boring in black and white.
The Sistine Chapel in Rome Italy is a splendid example of the colorful beauty of the famous art work of Michelangelo. What a privilege I enjoyed 1963, to view the Sistine Chapel. It is so spectacular I still have a vivid picture in my memory. In 1508, Pope Julius 11 summoned artist Michelangelo to Rome to paint the Sistine Chapel. This titanic task of working alone, painting 340 magnificent biblical figures and scenes on a complex curved surface of about 10,000 square feet took 20 months.
Though painted under duress, on his back, with painstaking attention to detail, and fraught with difficulty, five centuries after his death, Michelangelo’s art in the Sistine Chapel is considered one of the greatest masterpieces of history.
Just as the circumstances of Michelangelo’s work imbued his art with passion, so the pain and difficulties of our lives can contribute passion to our masterpiece. We choose the impact our live contributes. We have all the tools necessary for a work of genius: the canvas (our life), the gifts, the time, the energy. We may have many more years to create a masterpiece.
What will your life’s colors be? Will the effects of your life choices extend beyond your last breath, the last stroke of your brush, the last etching of your chisel? Who will benefit from your canvas of contributions to the world? What are those contributions?
Paint your picture of aging with the gusto of Michelangelo. Faith is the paint that will make your aging picture glow with light and exciting color.

May 27, 2010 - The Mark Eunice Kennedy Shriver Made On The World © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
What do you remember about Eunice Kennedy Shriver? The thoughts running through my mind like a silver string is (1) love for people with mental disabilities (2) enthusiasm, (3) charisma, (4) determination, (5) drive, (6) bubbling with life, (7) spiritually connected, (8) politically involved, (9) a devoted family member.
Shriver is known best for her creation of SPECIAL OLYMPICS, which sponsors competition for disabled athletes. Her passion for people with mental disabilities came from loving her mentally challenged sister, Rosemary.
In July 1968, the first SPECIAL OLYMPICS were held at Soldier Field in Chicago. President Obama sent condolences to the family saying, “She was a champion for people with intellectual disabilities.”
Born 1921 the fifth child of Joseph and Rose Kennedy’s 9 children, this spirited lady lived through many tragedies. Brother, Joseph Kennedy, 29, was killed in World War 11. Four years later her sister Kathleen Kennedy, 28, died in a plane crash. 1963 President Kennedy, 46, is shot in Dallas TX. While campaigning for President, brother Robert Kennedy is shot in California. 1995 mother Rose Kennedy dies at age 104. 2005 Shriver lost her beloved sister Rosemary Kennedy. 2006 sister Patricia Kennedy Lawford dies at age 82.
Her younger brother, Sen. Edward Kennedy, wins the prestigious presidential Medal of Freedom this week. He said of his sister, “She understood deeply the lessons our mother and father taught us – much is expected of those to whom much has been given.”
Married to Robert Sargent Shriver Jr., the couple had 5 children. She was a great role model for her children and 19 grandchildren. Eunice Kennedy Shriver’s indomitable spirit will always shine!
Several Bible verses come to my mind when I think of this woman’s legacy.
Psalms 34: 5 The Revised Standard Edition of the Bible
“Look to Him and be radiant: so your faces shall never be ashamed.” Daniel 12:3 The Living Bible
“Those who are wise – the people of God – shall shine as brightly as the sun’s brilliance, and those who turn many to righteousness, will glitter like stars forever.” Psalms 90:17 King James Version
“And let the beauty of our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.”

Jun. 3, 2010 - Red Sunset: Good Weather The Next Day © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
Weather systems typically move from west to east, and red clouds result when the sun shines on their undersides at either sunrise or sunset. Prior to the invention of the mercury barometer, it was very difficult to gather numerical data of any predictive value. The only instrument of any reliability was human experience. Weather folklore has been practiced for centuries. There are variations of weather folklore, but they all carry the same message.
A red sunset usually means dry weather the next day. A red sunrise caused people to prepare for stormy weather.
Matthew 16: 2-3 (Jesus) replied, (to some Pharisees and Sadducees that wanted to test him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.)
“When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather: for the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the sings of the times.”
In North America:
Red sky at night, sailor’s delight, Red sky at morning, sailors take a warning.
Denmark/Norway:
“Morning red gives wet days, Evening red gives sweet days.”
Timothy D. Haston, an Alabama Poet, gave me permission to print THE RED SKY.
“Seems it was January, from the east, the Lord sent us a glorious red sky. Its beauty called me outside. The chill pierced my face, buy my eyes could not leave that red sky. He sent it for a reason. As I gazed upon his red mornin’ sky, I thought of a fine friend and a talk we had ‘bout how it’s our job to search for meaning and reason in things that happen along our path.”
“See, true beauty don’t come from a perfect sky. A glorious sky comes with the blemishes of clouds and imperfections. As in life, true beauty don’t come from the perfect life, it comes from the challenge of trouble and thin times. We grow, become stronger, and closer to the Lord.”
Lord let me thank you for hard times, red morning skies, and all your promises. The closer trouble in our lives brings us to you, and the talks and the life we share with our friends.

Jun. 10, 2010 - The Nobility of Aging © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
The process of aging brings nobility and elder grace to many senior citizens. Several years ago, I traveled to Palo Alto, California to attend Dr. Walter M. Bortz 11, conference entitled DARE TO BE 100. After reading his book, WE LIVE TOO SHORT AND DIE TOO LONG, my attitude about aging totally changed from negative to positive. So, it was a no brainer for me to make a special effort to attend his seminar.
Meeting Dr. Bortz and his beautiful wife for dinner, the fragrance of success, happiness, and joy exuded from their enthusiasm for life.
Inspired by this wonderful couple, I realized the gift of years is to be enjoyed one day at a time. With wild anticipation I experience the nobility of aging in the spirit of hope and faith, as each new day, hour and minute is a new beginning and is to be celebrated. Each minute is a miracle that cannot be repeated. It is an encrusted jewel to be savored. If I had my life to live over, I would laugh and love more. I would enjoy every single minute while it exists.
Aging is a grand adventure. Life is for living. My prayer is that my legacy will be that I spoke a word of encouragement to someone; I lifted the spirit of someone depressed; and spread words of love, faith and hope. I hope my nobility of aging may be that I invested in the lives of others.
As I age, my desire is to have the attitude of a Jewish girl in a concentration camp. “From tomorrow on, I shall be sad; from tomorrow on, but not today. Today I will be glad, and every day, no matter how bitter it may be. I shall say, from tomorrow on I shall be sad, not today.”
The light of Jesus shining through a person with elder grace sparkles just as a cut gem reflects beautiful colors in all direction.
I enjoyed meeting President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan a couple of times during their time in the White House. They exemplified the nobility of aging. They were a lovely couple and so much in love with each other. Their lively positive energy was contagious. The Gipper called his first lady, pee-wee power house. When they entered a room, it was filled with their sprit of joy.
I am thrilled to be aging during the beginning of the new millennium, because people are living longer and better. Dr. Walter M. Bortz, declares if we take good care of our bodies and don’t contract a fatal disease, or have a fatal accident, it’s possible to live 120 years or 1 million hours.

Jun. 17, 2010 - Flat Purse Fat Soul © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
We are living in a different world than we experienced two years ago.
Our bubble of prosperity has burst, and we are learning new innovative ways to live. In my opinion one positive change is the family moving back to the dinner table at night to eat a home cooked meal, reconnecting with each other while talking about their day. Eating the dinner meal with the family had almost become a lost art, with the booming economy!
I enjoyed breakfast this morning with some of my cousins who grew up with me as an extended family that worked the cotton fields together. We reminisced about our grandparents cooking big meals Sunday after church from the garden, orchard, cows, poultry, and pigs grown on the farm. My grandmother, a great cook, loved having the whole family plus the preacher’s family gathered around her long table laden with sumptuous food. There were a dozen grandchildren who wiggled and giggled as my PAW PAW, who stuttered, prayed a long blessing on the food.
During the meal, the lively discussion centered on religion, politics and the price of cotton. After a fine meal MaMa Todd served homemade ice cream, after one of my uncles had cranked the ice cream freezer with his strong farmer arms. She also cooked yellow layered cakes with fudge icing, and white layered cakes with coconut icing. Her fried apple pies were her specialty.
After lunch the men sat in the living room or on the front porch, discussing the word affairs, while the women cleaned the kitchen, discussing home and hearth, children, and husbands. The children enjoyed a big yard to play red rover, red rover, or knock the ten can. The squealing and laughter filled the afternoon air like musical chatter. Belonging to a family of love and laughter fills the emotional tank with joy!
PSALMS 128 KJV - “Blessed is everyone that feareth the Lord; that walketh in his ways. 2. For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands; happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee. 3. Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table. 4. Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the Lord. 5. The Lord shall bless thee out of Zion: and thou shalt see the good of Jerusalem all the days of thy life. 6. Yea, thou shalt see thy children’s children, and peace upon Israel.
During this season of challenge and choice, positive efforts are being made to save our planet, and our families. Each person has ideas and plans to make our world better. It’s time to take charge and make things happen.
Such as actor Kevin Costner’s new invention to clean up the oil spill. During World War II the people of America banded together to accomplish whatever needed to be accomplished. It’s amazing to read some of the stories of survival during the Great Depression. Our purses may be flat; however our souls are fat as we get new motivation to create solutions.

Jun. 24, 2010 - Friendship is Divine © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
During my senior lifestyle, I treasure friendships. Emerson said, “the only way to have a friend is to be one.”
The value in friendship is often found in positive reciprocity, the ability to express feeling without being judged, mutual compassion, honesty and empathy. Friends are stimulating! “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend. Proverbs 27:17
The freedom to be myself with friends is divine. There is a chemistry of true communication when several friends are gathered for a meal. An impressive body of research proves that great friendships enhance a feeling of well being, thus is good for your health.
It’s sad according to a study documented in the June 2006 issue of the journal AMERICAN SOCIOLOGICAL REVIEW, Americans are thought to be suffering a loss in the quality and quantity of close friendships since at least 1985.
What does the Bible say about friendships?
Proverbs 17:17 KJV – “A friend loveth at all times…”
John 15:13 KJV – “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
The Bible tells us that “the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David.” Being a senior citizen, many of us have felt this kind of closeness with a friend. It is definitely a feeling of pure joy!
Talk about Divine Friendships! Deuteronomy 34: 10 tells us the Lord knew Moses face to face! And, in James 2: 23 Abraham was called the Friend of God.
A true friendship story. During the heartbreak of a divorce, my true friend came to my rescue. Being the tour guide for a trip to Europe, she persuaded me to participate. What a wonderful trip and perfect timing for my recovery. While in Parish France, her luggage was not put on the cart with the rest of the luggage being transported to the airport. When she discovered her luggage was not traveling with us, she contacted the Hotel, and they assured her that the luggage would catch up with her. Each day the luggage did not materialize, and I would share my clothes with her which included underwear, shoes, outer clothes, and makeup. What fun we enjoyed mixing and matching my clothes until the end of the trip.

Jul. 1, 2010 - The Significance Of The 4th Of July © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
American’s kick off summer with back yard barbeques, picnics, walks on the beach and fireworks, celebrating our freedom on the fourth of July.
Independence Day commemorates the Continental Congress’ adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The document primarily written by Thomas Jefferson served as a formal announcement that the 13 American Colonies were no longer part of the British Empire and would henceforth be free and independent states.
Freedom is a precious word for all Americans. The Bible proclaims, “…where the spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” 2 Corinthians 3:17 KJV
1812 conflict broke out over British’s attempt to regulate American ships. 1813 Maj. George Armistead asked for a flag so big that the British couldn’t miss it. Mary Young Pickersgill of Baltimore was commissioned to make the flag. Mary and her thirteen years old daughter constructed the flag from 400 yards of the best quality material. Cutting 13 stars which measured two feet from point to point, eight red and seven white stripes, 2 feet wide, the flag was sewed together. (30 x 42 ft) $40 was the cost.
As the sun rose over the battle of Baltimore, the British could see the bright, beautiful, brilliant American flag declaring victory. 2010, this symbol of freedom proudly flies in every nook and corner of America to proclaim our liberty.
When I see the American Flag, hear the song AMERICA, and live my life with freedom of choice, I praise God for liberty! The General Congress of Philadelphia proclaimed, “These United Colonies are, and of right ought to be free and independent states.” This glorious proclamation gave birth to a jubilee every 4th of July.
Throngs of people waited outside to hear the results of the vote of the Congress of Philadelphia. The bell in the steeple of the State House, imported twenty-three years previously from London to the Provincial Assembly of Pennsylvania rang out! On the bell was written from scripture, “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land, unto all the inhabitance thereof.”
Celebrate liberty this 4th of July 2010!

Jul. 8, 2010 - God In My Boat © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
The sign on the left side of the 12-foot, 145-pound aluminum boat, “MISS GUNTERSVILLE LAKE,” reads WHEN GOD IS IN MY BOAT AND IN MY HEART, I’M SAFE. This security took the late Bill Harris from Guntersville, Al, miles through rain, hail, wind, lightning, high waves, and mechanical problems, safely to Chicago and Lake Michigan and back to Guntersville.
Retired businessman, Ray Hubble enjoyed being Bill’s mate on many of his boat trips.
I interviewed the two men shortly before the 25th trip. At 85 Harris remembered he started taking these trips when he turned a half Century old. He said at 50 it’s time for adventure. His mate, Ray Hubble, declared Captain Harris has the stamina of an 18 years old man.
I asked Bill to share his secrets of being ageless. He grinned his broad grin, leaned back in his chair and informed me, “I exercise everyday on my bike. I do not smoke or drink alcohol. The Lord has blessed me with good health. I love life. I love every minute I am in my boat! No person has ever touched the stirring wheel of my boat. I have loved taking it 55,000 miles in the past 30 years. That’s twice around the world.”
“My boat is powered by a 30-HP Yamaha outboard motor. On the left of the motor is my tag, the size of an automobile tag. The tag reads, ‘MY HOME IS IN ALABAMA.’ The sign behind the boat reads, ‘GOD IS MY C0-PILOT.’”
Captain Harris told me many stories about his adventures on the Mighty Mississippi River. He informed me that he remembered being in his boat in 1977 when the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley died. While interviewing these two great adventurers, I felt energized from their charisma! I experienced a feeling of youth caught from their youthfulness. I learned from them – love of life and love of God will produce a life of exciting adventure.
Bill smiled at me and said, “next to God and my wife, I love my boat. God is always in my boat with me.”
Jesus loved to fish! He said in Matthew 4:19 KJV,“…Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Bill Harris enjoyed his boat, fishing for fish and fishing for men on this earth. He is now in heaven enjoying fishing with Jesus.

Jul. 15, 2010 - A Thought Has The Power To Change Our Senior Lifestyle © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
As we open our minds to the idea that being a senior is fun, fabulous and fulfilling, the adventure of living and loving the senior years will evolve! Elder wisdom brings about the beautiful time in life when you know your strengths. Knowing your strengths, you follow the road paved with your strengths. Long years of living have honed your strengths, making you feel bolder enjoying those strengths.
I remember as a child, my grandmothers had great skills in serving scrumptious meals. I especially enjoyed the delicious desserts. One dessert I remember were homemade fried apple pies. Both of my grandmothers are in heaven, but I still taste those wonderful pies in my memory. The joy of my grandmothers was their expertise in cooking and sharing meals with their extended families. Praise and love from their children and grandchildren filled their emotional tank.
Senior years are sacred years, because we are becoming who God intended us to be. He has guided our lives, pruned us, given us blessings, allowed us to be seniors, so we are glad to shine and be a lighthouse for the younger generation.
Life is living. Being a senior does not mean you stop growing. It’s a perfect time to put the finishing touches on what God has created in you. It is time to pull together all the things you have learned about yourself and become God’s masterpiece.
We have bonus years. Author Lydia Bronte wrote, in her book called “The Longevity Factor,” that our generation has put fifteen years onto our lifespan. If you change your thought patterns to “I am becoming”, not “my life is almost over” you will change the way you think about aging. You will realize you are moving to higher ground. Our bodies are the house where our spirit lives. When we change our format with each new realm of knowledge, every new experience, and excitement for the future, our spirits do not age.
Sure there are times when our bodies fail. I inherited my grandmother’s heart condition. She died at 48 years young. But, due to the pace maker planted in my heart, God has allowed me to live longer. Difficult situations we go though make us tougher, gives us more empathy for others, and we become more like Jesus.
My family shows Tennessee Walking Horses in competition. One of our main contenders was named LIVE AND LEARN. As we age we learn to live with the attitude life is still vital. We learn to live on the promises of God. Life is limitless with Him! If the aging process slows you down a bit, it probably is a good thing. At a slower pace we take time to observe nature, talk to God, and enjoy our grandchildren.
Carl David’s book BADER FIELD, is a warm personal story of family, David David Art Gallery, and true love. When Carl David lost his “P0P” who he adored, to a heart attack, he said, “I will journey through the rest of my life with the sole remembrance that I must take advantage of every single minute while it exits.”

Jul. 22, 2010 - Time Is Life © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
Take charge of your time, because time is your non-renewable resource.
Your time is your life! No one can spend it but you. Decide when your prime time of day is and schedule a quiet hour. I like my quiet time in the morning, with a cup of java, God’s love letter to me the Bible, and my journal. In the freshness of the morning, I feel alert; the magnificence of the universe feels my soul! During the month of July, my favorite spot for my quiet time is in a flower garden. The droplets of dew on the colorful flowers give me a vision of God’s magnificent, incredible creativity. The fragrance, color, butterflies, and a bucket full of sunshine lifts my spirit to the sky. If I’m enjoying my vacation at a beautiful resort on the ocean as I am today, I feel no limits and no boundaries to my rising enthusiasm about life. Spending time with my son and his family as he presides over the 2010 Alabama Wholesale Grocery Association Annual meeting gives me wings to fly into a cloud of happiness. What a thrill having my quiet time interrupted by happy squeals of grandchildren splashing in the pool.
The Bible invites each of us to “BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD.” To be still and listen in the quietness of your time with God enriches your soul and consequently your life. I have filled many journals for the past fifty years with words from God, prayers and answered prayers. I read the journals and understand God’s timing in answering prayers.
We are God’s children, and He loves us with an everlasting love. You understand that time spent with someone you love is golden. He loves to spend quality time with us anytime, anyplace!
I’ll share with you a story written in my Bible about my son David now forty eight years young. In my quiet time May 5, 1981, I read from Psalm 91, King James Version of the Bible.
1. “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress; my God; in him will I trust. 3. Surely He shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. 4. He shall cover thee with His feathers, and under His wings shalt thou trust: His truth shall be thy shield and buckler. 5. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; 6. Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. 7. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
I felt disquieted in my spirit about my teenaged son. So I wrote in the my journal “Lord I trust you with David.” David was 19 years old and was enjoying the company of several of his friends on Saturday night. He was driving a little sports car with a tee top.
At 2:44 am I received a phone call that David had turned over his car.
Verse 11 read, “For He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.” At 2:49 I wrote beside this verse, “Lord, I claim this verse for David.”
God answered my prayer; David was not hurt in this accident. He now has a family and three children of his own.
We all have 24 hours a day. We cannot save them, and we have total authority of how we spend each minute. Do you feel God deserves one hour of your time each day to enjoy a quiet hour with him to be still and know Him?

Jul. 29, 2010 - Aging Gracefully With Dignity © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
Staying healthy is a trump card for successful aging. To be consistently healthy, it's important to practice healthy eating and daily exercise. Maintaining a safe weight while building muscle and brain power will keep one's energy raging! Vim and vigor will be your reward. Building on the platform of healthy aging, we strive to be the best that we can be. I want to be the best that I can be. All that God's created in me. Like someone else I cannot be. I just want to be me. Art Linkletter and Mark Victor Hansen, have published the book, "How to Make the Rest of Your Life the Best of Your Life." Life is an adventure. The grand finale should be spectacular! Jerry Seinfeld says, "never stop having fun." The very popular animated BEE MOVIE, was written and produce by Seinfield. He also voiced THE BEE. Like Seinfield, let the kid in you play as you age. Lighten up physically, mentally, and socially. The happy kid will become a happy ager. 70 years old comic, George Carlin, said, "I like being 70, my ideas are richer" Experience is a good thing. We grow riper! The person I choose as an example of aging with grace and dignity is the Queen of England. The British people have voted her as "the greatest living Britain, 2007." This 81-year old granny has been Queen of England for 55 years. She wears her crown with dignity and style. She is the epitome of grace and charm. SHE IS AGELESS. As we age time is priceless. We can't save it. We can only spend it. Travel the remainder of your life in health and wellness. Remember to love and laugh.

Aug. 5, 2010 - Vim, Vigor, Vitality © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
Vital agers who are aging outside the box will continue to work after retirement age, because we are living longer and with more vim, vigor, and vitality. The aging of America may be good for individuals, communities, states and the USA. For instance in California, by 2020, the 60-plus population is expected to reach 8.7 million. Especially in the educational system, California is becoming more “mature-worker friendly” with the EnCorps Teachers Program. Many states are in the process of changing the government retirement policies to allow greater flexibility.
The new paradigm for experienced retirees’ is to move into a field of work for which they have a passion. With less family responsibilities, and a wealth of knowledge and experiences under their belt, many states want new retirees’. This pool of workers has much to offer a company.
A huge advantage to baby boom retirees is the ability to work through the ever popular, ever expanding internet. The internet is an open door to the world. World wide communication, markets and opportunities is an exciting way to expand an individual’s world and finances.
No time to relax for NBC’s TODAY SHOW’S 4th hour, over fifty gals, Hoda Kotb and Kathy Lee Gifford as host of the effervescent morning show. They are fine, fun and forever young!
Baby Boomer women view the dual liberation of empty nesting and retirement as providing new opportunities for career development, community involvement and creating a life they enjoy.
I’m finding each stage of life has its perks. As the almost 80 million baby boomers cash in on their perks, their lives become richer and more fulfilled.
Health concerns are more important for the baby boomer group! Indications from a Del Webb and a Met Life study indicate that fitness and being close to quality health care are increasingly important concerns. For these boomers, amenities like fitness centers and classes might be more important than a fancy golf Course.
Many retirees are moving near college campuses to take classes, take advantage of great libraries and theatre opportunities. We all know it’s important to keep growing synapses in our brain. A healthy adult brain has 100 billion nerve cells, or neurons, with long branching extensions connected at 100 trillion points called synapses. Smart baby boomers never retire from growing new synapse.
Find joy in retirement by creating your best life yet. As the soap opera says, “we only have ONE LIFE TO LIVE.”

August 12, 2010 - Reinventing Life After 50 © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
If you are fabulous after fifty, you belong to the Boomer Wave of positive aging. That special fiftieth year should be a jubilee! It’s prime time to renew your shine! Don’t live locked into the chains of ageism! Find every golden moment and share the glimmer.
I remember walking to the mailbox the day I received my first AARP Magazine, and thinking, I’m a half century old. Immediately I changed that thought to I’m 50 years young, so I will aspire to make the last half of my life stellar! I immediately begin to make plans to reinvent myself. I opened my mind, believing the twenty first century is the best time to be vital, sexy, and have fun after fifty years of living. The positive energy released by that thought began to change the way I lived.
When I enrolled in college, I separated myself from my younger life and formed a new adult life. At fifty, I needed to separate myself from the person I was to this point and create a refreshed, new version. I focused on my spiritual life, good health and appearance. I set aside a morning quiet time of meditation, to study God’s word and pray. This special time ushered into my life a feeling of confidence that empowered me to live my life with hope. I developed a deeper love affair with Jesus.
To live a successful older life, it’s imperative to live a healthy lifestyle. My first step, I obtained the services of a physical trainer in a wonderful gym. As the pounds melted away, I was motivated to buy new stylish clothes. Changing my diet to healthy foods, I gained more energy. With the plentiful cosmetic counters, and well trained hair stylist, the new millennium offered me a new look. This up dated look lifted my spirit. It’s hard to believe that being fifty years young is “cool”.
Romance is the heart of the universe. Many women who have lived through the turnstile of life for 5 decades are still sexy and very much in love with their husbands. The couple depends on humor, affection, and flexibility to keep their sex lives exciting. Many fabulous fifty baby boomers do not have a sexual famine. In contrast, mid life couples are enjoying sex more, because of more free time to spend together and less responsibility.
Many of the seventy eight million baby boomers have been given a divine touch from God with grandchildren. Experiencing less stress in life and more time to spend quality time with these delightful offsprings, I gained new joy! Being fifty is a new buzz word. Being mature socially, intellectually, and emotionally definitely has perks!
The elder wisdom of the baby boomers is like a giant waking from a long nap. Living of my life of fifty years, I have certainly gained wisdom.
With this new higher way of thinking, I plan to make a difference in someone’s life, my circle of life and the world.

August 19, 2010 - Late Bloomer Fulfillment © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
Answer the call of your true calling. So you’re in the Fall Season of your life. Let the wild side of yourself explore the passion for your true calling.
The great tenor, ANDREA BOCELLI enjoyed practicing law; however he knew his voice was special. He is now sharing his talent with huge audiences. This late bloomer is thrilling millions with his gift. If you have a special gift you have an obligation to yourself and others to share your talent. Robin Black author of IF I LOVE YOU, I WOULD TELL YOU THIS, said, “Do it, whatever it is. If you have a dream, go ahead, take the risks, and make whatever sacrifices you possibly can.”
Life is like basketball – ups, downs, and rebounds! If you are fabulous after fifty maybe it’s time for you to rebound as a late bloomer! There are many fabulous after fifty rebounders – exercise gurus, marathon runners, beauticians, writers, health care providers, and the list goes on and on.
Jesus said, “I have come that they might have life, and they might have it more abundantly.” John 10:10
I have known of “killjoys” looking for the bad and the worst in growing older, but Jesus is the bringer of joy. He is the eternal radiation of the splendor of God. He is the bright and morning star.
Rev. 22:16 Jesus said, “I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.”
I love the sunrise each morning! It is a symbol of God’s presence, hope and a new beginning each day. The Morning Star always leads us towards life and ushers in a new day. Just as the sun in the sky draws water from the earth, the son of God in the heavens draws sinful hearts unto himself to fill them with living water. If you are a fabulous after fifty late bloomer, desiring to let your true calling shine through, follow the charismatic characteristics of Jesus.
Luke 4:18 Jesus said, “THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME.”
Jesus enjoyed a divine endowment, an attractive personality with power and charm, and His presence drew crowds of people.
It’s never too late to follow your passion!

Aug. 26, 2010 - Enjoyment Spontaneously Overflows Into Praise © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™ One of the keys that unlocks successful aging is praise and thanksgiving! C.S. Lewis said, "...all enjoyment spontaneously overflows into praise." This statement motivates seniors to enjoy life. We are never to old to have fun. It is our choice. Examine the life of the late comedian Bob Hope. He lived to be 100. He enjoyed his wife, career, people, laughter, giving laughter away, travel, friends, food, and entertaining American troops. This month we will focus on praise and thanksgiving! "But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people, that you should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light." I Peter 2:9 KJV Is your aging life a chorus of praise? If so, join the symphony of baby boomers and senior boomers who are celebrating with Psalm 96. "Sing unto the Lord a new song: sing unto the Lord all the earth. Sing unto the Lord, bless his name; shew forth his salvations from day to day. Declare his glory among the hethern, his wonders among the people. For the Lord is great, and greatly to be praised: ,,," verses 1-4 KJV Those of us who are 50 years old and beyond praise God for the bonus precious time he has given us. Patsy Riley, First Lady of Alabama, said, "Don't waist a day. You don't get the opportunity to go back and repeat life." I praise God that he has given us the awesome experience of stepping over the threshold of a new millennium. God said in Isaiah, "I created you and have cared for you since before you were born. I will be your God throughout your lifetime...until your hair is white with age. I made you and I will take care of you. I will carry you along and save you" (Isaiah 43:3-4 NLT). New millennium seniors are helping write a golden chapter for aging Americans, and all generations who will follow. We are expanding our youth corridor with defensive aging. We are involved with the world around us. We are staying healthy by practicing good habits and proper nutrition. We keep raising the bar to exceed sensational expectations. These golden years are a blessing. We are pushing the aging envelope to the limit to enjoy our grand finale. We are building our aging life on praise and thanksgiving to the God who never ages, but stands outside the box of time!

Sept. 2, 2010 - Seniors: Life Time Students © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™ California's First Lady, Maria Shriver, was asked to give the key note speech at her nephew's high school graduation. The title of her speech, JUST WHO WILL YOU BE, became personal to her. She said to the graduating seniors, "figure out what gives you joy, and do that! Look deep inside yourself to know who you are, not what anyone else thinks you should be. Do what is true to you!" As you "age outside the box," just who will you be? We could ask ourselves this question at any age. Mid-life and beyond is full of change. Many senior adults are becoming aware that learning is fun and rewarding. One out of 10 college students today are over 50. Most colleges offer special classes for seniors and some classes are audited free. The permitted full usage of a college library is a plus. A new kind of retirement community is springing up in America - senior resorts connected to universities. The university environment is a fertile place to be stimulated and stay productive. Colleges usually offer opportunities for theater, concert series, academic courses, health connections, gym, museums and interesting people with which to communicate. Jesus called his followers disciples. That term means learner. Jesus was called "rabbi," meaning teacher. Jesus said, "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me..." Matthew 11:28-29 KJV The renewing of the mind is high priority for aging people. "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of the mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." Romans 12:2 KJV The brain has the ability to generate new brain cells. It is a fact that at any age the brain has the ability to develop new cellular connections. (Synapse) Successful older people develop skills, talents, and interests. Grandma Moses didn't start painting until she was eighty years young. She completed over fifteen hundred paintings in the remainder of her life, with 25 percent of those produced after she became a centenarian. One of our political candidates for the 2008 election for President of the United States of America, 71 years young, Sen. John McCain, is running for the most powerful, stressful job in the world. Traveling across the country campaigning is highly stimulating! Television personality, Barbara Walters, is promoting her new book, AUDITIONS. Enjoying her 70's, she told an interviewer, "I'm at a very good place in my life. I'm very mellow. I'm very happy." We are learning that age is not a disqualifier. Older people do not become less, but more. The FABULOUS AFTER 50 continue to learn about God, one's self, how to intensify relationships and be productive. We are lifetime students. "If you continue to work and to absorb the beauty in the world around you, you will find that age does not necessarily mean getting old." Pablo Casals

Sept. 9, 2010 - It's Never Too Late © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
“IS IT TOO LATE? Ah, nothing is too late Till the tired heart shall cease to palpitate. For age is opportunity no less Than youth itself, though in another dress; And as the evening twilight fades away The sky is filled with stars invisible by day.” ...Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
The following is a story written for me by a friend.
“When I was 12 years old, I played on an undefeated pee wee football team, the EAGLES. We had not lost a game in either of the years that I played with them. It was great to be successful but there was a lot of pressure on us to keep up the unbeaten record, especially for such young boys.
During the playoffs, we were matched against the second best team in the league. The championship was at stake and many people were there to cheer on their team to victory. During the second quarter of the ball game, as I was attempting to tackle the smallest player on the other team, I injured my face. Everyone agreed that I should go and have x-rays taken. As we were in route to the hospital, I couldn’t stop the feelings of disappointment in being knocked out of the BIG GAME.
When we arrived at the emergency room it seemed as though everyone moved in slow motion. Finally the doctor came in and diagnosed my injury as a broken nose. He told me that there wasn’t anything that could be done. My thoughts were still on the game, so I asked the doctor if I could still go back into the game and play football. Much to my surprise, his answer was yes, provided that I wear a very protective helmet. I was elated.
My father was convinced that our game was over by this time, but I was insistent that we go by the field and see. He finally gave in and when we drove by, we saw players on the sideline and thought the game had just ended. It had not. The game was tied and the players were resting before going into overtime.
As the car rolled to a stop, I jumped out and ran onto the field just as the coach was sending in the defense. He put me in at my normal position of linebacker and the other team did not score on their possession so it was out turn. We took the ball on our on five yard line with four downs to score. On the first play, our running back took the handoff and ran right behind my block and into the end zone. And the EAGLES won the championship.
My reason for relating this story is that I learned a lesson that others could benefit from. Don’t assume the game is over. It could be that you can get back in and contribute to the success of the team.”
This simple story could be a major encouragement to senior citizens who may be experiencing health, social, spiritual, or financial problems.
You are responsible for designing your own future. If you live to be 100 years old, you have the choice to be despondent, and dependent, or get back into the game of life and win!

Sept. 16, 2010 - The Fruit Of The Spirit © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
I fervently believe the seniors of your generation will change forever the attitude for the good about aging. My friend Dr. Walter Bortz II, MD, Gerontologist has a new book THE ROADMAP to 100: The Breakthrough Science of Living a Long and Healthy Life. He will be a guest on my show "Aging Outside the Box®" Syndicated Radio Show 6pm central live, Thursday night, September 23, 2010. The show is archived; therefore you may listen to it anytime.
Congratulations, seniors are living longer and better. We are learning that exercise; healthy food and lifestyle have the ability give us a great quality of life after 50. As a senior citizen, I have learned that getting involved in a cause that is greater than myself, gives my life a deeper meaning. We are rich in wisdom to extend and expand our productive years. To become more wise as I write books, and speak across the nation, I attended the 2010 Aging in America Conference of the National Council of Aging and America’s Society on aging, co-sponsored by the Chicago Department of Family and Support Services.
I enjoyed hearing cultural observer and bestselling author Gail Sheehy who is an expert on life’s passages. For 30 years she has written books about her wisdom on the fundamental issues men and women face as they pass through life. When her husband was diagnosed with cancer, she took on a new role as caregiver. She has a new book, PASSAGES IN CAREGIVING: Turning Chaos into Confidence. She is also a care giving ambassador for the magazine AARP. Gail Sheehy’s wisdom will help many people as they become senior citizens.
The Bible informs us in James 3:17 KJV that wisdom is full of spiritual fruit. “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
As seniors, we have the distinct privilege of passing the fruit of the spirit down to our Grandchildren.
The fruit of the spirit: Galatians 5:22.23 KJV “But the fruit of the Spirit love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, against such there is no law.”

Oct. 14, 2010 - Blessings: Your Children's Children © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
My Thompson Chain Reference Bible was given to me in 1979, by my four best friends, members of my weekly prayer group. This precious Bible has traveled with me down many paths the last thirty one years. It has flown on airplanes, sailed on cruises, lay on my bedside table, and accompanied me to church, used to give speeches, speak on the radio and television. It has served as a place to write inspiration in the margins.
During my quiet time today, I focused on Psalms 128. "Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord; that walketh in his ways." The last verse reminds us that we will see our children’s children and peace upon Israel. I have written beside this Psalm in the margin being blessed with the first names of my grandchildren. During the nineties I have written Michelle, Monica, Stephanie, Melissa, Sarah, Jackson; - 2,000 Lawrence, JoAnna, Julia, Miranda and Braelyn.
This past week-end, I was the first person seated at the wedding of my first granddaughter, Michelle Corcoran bride of Michael Clay. The brightness of her happiness gave an aura of joy to the wedding party, and her beauty was a beam of God’s shekina glory. I enjoyed flashbacks of holding her the first time. I remembered attending her baseball games; the two of us exploring Washington D.C. when she turned 10; and picking her up at the airport to spend her summer vacation with me after she moved out of state. I was brave enough to have her first boy, girl party when she was thirteen in my home.
As my thoughts turned back to the moment, I knew the present was a precious time. After the reception Michelle called me to her side. She gave me a present, a picture of her and her handsome groom. She put her arms around me and whispered in my ear, I felt Granny and Granddad’s presence here tonight. We both cried, as my parents are walking the streets of gold. She said, grandmother this is the first tear I have shed tonight.
My entire family experienced a celebratory mood, as we ate, socialized, and danced the night away.
Psalms 128 became very real to this grandmother on my first granddaughter’s wedding day.
GOD BLESSES HIS CHILDREN...
1. Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord; that walketh in his ways. 2. For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee. 3. Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house; thy children like olive plants round about thy table. 4. Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the Lord. 5. The Lord shall bless thee out of Zion: and thou shalt see the good of Jerusalem all the days of your life. 6. Yea, thou shalt see thy children’s children, and peace upon Israel.

Oct. 21, 2010 - An Autumn Day © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
“On such a day each road is planned To lead to some enchanted land; Each turning meets expectancy, The signs I read on every hand, I know by autumn’s wizardry On such a day can be Only a great dream for me... by Eleanor Myers Jewett
My first autumn road trip for 2010 was certainly a great dream for me, as I headed into the beautiful Tennessee Hills for my oldest granddaughters outdoor fall wedding. The fall foliage lifted my spirits as I observed the magnificent reds that brightened the landscape. The shiny red leaves of the Sumacs, bright red leaves of the sweet gum and black gum trees, mixed with the flaming orange and yellow of the sugar maples made me feel as if I was in a wonderland of color.
Roadside pop-up markets also shared an array of fall colors. Bins of pumpkins, provided bright orange as an array of earth tones spread with the apples, gourds, and corn, for sale. I was enthralled with the marigolds, vari-colored chrysanthemums and zinnias. This Indian summer was heavenly perfect.
The sun was as bright as bright could be, as I drove along the highway full of glee. My thoughts drifted back to my childhood, gathering colored leaves, taking them into the house and putting each leaf under a piece of waxed paper sliding a crayon over the veins of the leaves to leave a beautiful imprint for my room.
I am now in the autumn of my life. Like the autumn leaves, I cannot hide my true colors. With earned grace, and mellowness I turn bright red with enthusiasm to choose life and to celebrate life.
As the harvest moon beamed its bright rays upon the bride and groom as they exchanged their vows to love and cherish each other through eternity, I felt the touch of the Masters hand. A treasured moment.
With La Prevenchere, Brittany France – I hope you have: A September to remember, An October full of splendor, A November to treasure.

Oct. 28, 2010 - Trick Or Treat © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™ Enjoying the mystique of the Fall Season, gives me renewed synergy, energy, and joy. My daily morning walk among the falling colored leaves gave my spirit a lift as well as my heart rate. Remember exercise is “the golden egg of aging.” Anticipating the holidays of the Fall Season, I think about Halloween and Thanksgiving. I love the feasting of families on Thanksgiving day. I can smell the fragrance of the turkey cooking in grandmother’s oven.
Being over 50, we are in our prime to enjoy Halloween with grandchildren, great-grandchildren, or any way we choose. Creativity with costumes, decorating, entertaining, and pulling pranks will add variety to life. Just what is Halloween? How did it originate? Centuries ago, before Christianity became a part of Ireland; the Celts celebrated New Years Eve the last night of October.
Historians think Halloween started in the United States toward the end of the 19th century when the Irish immigrants arrived. The Celts celebrated a festival called Sambain meaning, “the end of summer.” The Celts believed on this night that the powers of evil came out to celebrate their power over good. People would put out sweets and other good things to eat to placate the evil spirits. Many would disguise themselves and roam the countryside.
The Catholic Church, back in the eighth century A.D. declared the first day of November, ALL SAINTS DAY.
However the tradition arose, for the present Halloween Holiday, it has become a big time to play in America. Shopping in the retail stores, we realize how commercialized this holiday has become. Children become excited about dressing up in costume and trick or treating for candy and gifts.
I remember my childhood. I grew up on a cotton farm in Alabama. My family, grandmother, pawpaw, uncles, aunts, cousins, sister, brother and mom and dad, lived in three small houses in a row. We worked the fields together. We were a little clan who loved to be together.
Each Halloween, we would finish picking cotton about sundown. The parents would put the kids on top of the picked cotton loaded on a truck. We played in the cotton excitedly, remembering that this was the night we would trick or treat. Once home, our moms would allow us to wear our working clothes, paint our faces, place a hat on our heads, give us a brown paper bag for treats, then walk us around the neighborhood.
Going inside each neighbors house that smelled of fresh baked cookies, we would receive, peppermint candy, a red apple and a delicious cookie. Next it was time to go to the Halloween party at church with all our friends. Bobbing apples from a galvanized wash tub was the main attraction.
Today Americans enjoy a holiday and a chance to celebrate in many different ways. Halloween is a great time for the FABULOUS AFTER 50 to pretend, play, enjoy children, and have a blast!

Nov. 4, 2010 - Let Freedom Ring © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
The votes are counted. The results are in. The American people used their coveted freedom to vote against strong government power. Again the wisdom of our forefathers who created the two party system and a President for checks and balances proved to be positive.
USA TODAY Nov. 4, 2010, in Susan Page’s article PRESIDENT LOST ‘TRACT’ to voters, stated. “In the wake of a Republican “shellacking” in midterm congressional elections, a chastened President Obama acknowledged Wednesday he had lost the connection with voters that won him the White House.”
Not only am I proud of our judicial system, I’m jubilant over the fact that American’s have a huge opportunity to be FABULOUS AFTER FIFTY and AGE OUTSIDE THE BOX.
Today’s Seniors Network announced that Dr. Goldman, founder of the National Academy of Sports Medicine and the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, predicted “within the next 25 to 50 years medicine would advance at the same rate as telecommunications and the internet had in recent years. You’re going to have very large segments of the population that are 100, 110, and 120.” Today’s Seniors Network says, “QUANTUM leaps in medical technology could see many Baby Boomers and their Children reach the grand old age of 120.”
The J. Hartford Foundation announced, “By 2030, when the last Baby Boomer reaches 65, there will be more than 70 million Americans over 65.”
My book SENSATIONAL AFTER 60, Loving Life all over again, shares great motivation and inspiration on loving your life while aging. Sexagenarians who are healthy and enjoying the wisdom of a life well spent will feel twelve years younger than their chronological years. Consequently, they will be spending time with younger people, and feeling the self confidence to continue to achieve their goals.
As you march towards your grand old age of 120, my book addresses a host of important issues, from medical concerns to coping with the loss of a spouse. This new season of life is a supremely rich rite-of-passage. I’ll teach you how to walk across the “stage of age,” with the attitude that it is your time to shine.
II Corinthians 3:17 “The Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

Nov. 11, 2010 - Examples of Radiant People Over Fifty © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
God often raises up his children out of obscurity and shines a light upon them. Such was the case of singer Susan Boyle. A shy middle aged woman, from Blackburn Scotland, was discovered on a television talent show. This devout Catholic loves her God, her family, the simple things in life and singing. Her positive attitude drives her to sing feel-good, optimistic songs. Her first album in 2009 (quadruple-platinum) I DREAMED A DREAM catapulted her into stardom. She hopes her new 2010 album THE GIFT will lift people’s spirit.
Matthew 13, 43 “…the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father.”
When God plants a passion in the hearts of his children, they burn with desire to follow His call. He instilled in me a passion to encourage aging people. The joy of experiencing the publication of my books, FABULOUS AFTER 60; Finding Fulfillment For Tomorrow, and SENSTIONAL AFTER 60; Loving Life All Over Again, lights up my life. When I graduate to heaven, these books will still be encouraging aging people to make the last half of life their best.
A 78-year-old priest Rev. Sylwester Zawadzki, living in a small Polish town, Swebodzin knew his life’s mission was to erect the tallest statue of Jesus in the world with outstretched arms and a golden grown. Though this project required lots of prayer, money, planning, skilled workman and determination, this priest knew he would complete the project. Poland now embellishes the thrill of having the tallest statue of Jesus in the world.
What passion has God planted in your heart? The passion may seem impossible to you, but with God all things are possible. One is never too old for passion. The oldest twitter user 104-years-old Ivy Bean thinks it’s a good way to keep in touch with people. An engaging, lively and friendly lady with an infectious smile maxed out her 5,000-friend limit in no time.
Age is just a number with Ivy Bean, a resident of Hillside Manor she recently won a gold medal at the residential homes’ Over-75 Olympics in the Frisbee-throwing category.

Nov. 18, 2010 - A Blissful Thanksgiving © by Shirley A. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
My seven year old grandson, Lawrence, said to me, “Thanksgiving is my favorite day of the whole year. The entire family sits around the table and eats turkey and dressing. Then each one tells what they are most thankful for.”
Yes, the whole house smells, in a word, divine, as the turkey is roasting. Spending Thanksgiving with the people you love is the greatest gift of all. Traditions ground us to each other and our past. Children grow up. New people are added to the family. Ten Thanksgivings ago, I had 6 adorable grandchildren. This year I have 10 adorable grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Time-travel forward a decade, I’m looking forward to 10 years of astonishing change.
One of my personal traditions each year is watching the Macy Thanksgiving Parade on television, while I cook Candied Yams (an old family recipe passed down from a great-grandmother) and home made yeast rolls. While watching the dazzling parade, I get flash backs in time when my son marched in the New York Parade with his high school band, making music on a big base drum. He is now 33 years old.
Another of my favorite traditions is viewing the famous television show, A CHARIE BROWN THANKSGIVING. I relax with a glass of champagne, and a snack, while enjoying the humor of the show. Thanksgiving is a holiday to express thankfulness, gratitude, and appreciation to God, family and friends for which all have been blessed of material possessions and relationships. Traditionally, it has been a time to give thanks for a bountiful harvest. American’s commonly believe that the first Thanksgiving happened in 1621, at Plymouth Plantation, in Massachusetts.
I wish for you and your family a blissful thanksgiving 2010!

Nov. 25, 2010 - Happy Thanksgiving © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
Today is Turkey Day! Throughout the history of America the turkey has been the traditional main dish! Every year, more than 46 million turkeys are killed for Thanksgiving Holiday Dinners. While enjoying the Thanksgiving dinner the family shares the attitude of gratitude.
Ninety per cent of Americans say they eat Thanksgiving Dinner with family. This percentage gives me hope that the family is still a strong institution.
Some say the tradition of pardoning the White House turkey by the president of the United States dates back to President Lincoln’s pardoning of his son Tad’s pet turkey! 2005 until now the pardoned turkeys have been flown first class to Disneyland in California. These turkeys served as honorary Grand Marshall of Disneyland’s Thanksgiving Parade. After the parade the turkey strutted around Disneyland’s Big Thunder Ranch. According to reports, Disneyland will no longer take the presidential pardons.
President Obama’s pardoned turkey for 2010 will be sent to George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate in Virginia.
Let us give thanks as we enjoy our Thanksgiving feast!

Dec. 2, 2010 - Focus On The Beauty Of Christmas © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
December is the time to focus on the beauty of the season, and the strong spiritual enhancement of the celebration of the birth of Christ! Jesus came from his glorious home in heaven to earth and became poor; so that we could become rich!
2010 is a time of high tech, people who multi task, and participate in a hurry, scurry way of life. It’s easy to get caught up in hypertension. Text messaging has taken over the face to face conversations. Have you traveled in a car with someone who listened to their music on head phones? Such is our world 2010. A great resolution this December is to be in the present and focus on the people we love, spiritual realities, and joy.
During the month of December 2010, I have made a decision to increase my spiritual closeness to Jesus, by focusing on His love letter to me. When superstar Andrea Bocelli preformed in a spectacular Christmas concert, on Public Broadcasting Station in Alabama, I seated myself in front of my television and soaked in the awesome Christmas music. The dazzling lights, colors and beauty of the stage took my breath away. Since it was recorded at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, I relived the celebratory times I had previously enjoyed there. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir sang some of my favorite Christmas Songs. My total focus on this spectacular Christmas music filled my soul with joy?
Along with the angelic music of the Christmas Season, my desire is to focus on the glee of the children. Thanks to my beautiful ten grandchildren and one great granddaughter, I have ample opportunity to join in their folly! One special joy this Christmas is my bright and beautiful 3 years old granddaughter adopted from an orphanage in China.
The Magic of Christmas is the love that flows. Christmas gifts are ways to show love. Last year one of my DivineInspiredVivatiousAnnointed (DIVA) sister’s gave me an Everyday Blessings Journal - Spiritual Refreshment for Women. As I focused on this journal for my quiet time, my life during 2010 has been enriched.
People helping people in need show benevolence. Driving through the decorated lighted streets in my home town, my mood lights up like a Christmas tree. When I focus on the Christmas tree, I see life. To really enjoy this festive season, I pray I will be aware of the beauty of the season, observing, soaking into my soul the joy, and praising God for the gift of His Son.

Dec. 9, 2010 - Life Is Precious, Fragile, And Brief © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
At seventy two, my life has been filled with blessings. I have lived my life with gusto, experiencing every moment with wonder and feeling great pleasure in the miracle of life. I am now in the December of my life, and I fully understand what the Bible declares that life is like a shadow, a flying shuttle, hurrying messengers, only a handbreadth in extent, like a weaver’s web and a vanishing vapor.
In the Bible, “while still in the presence of the whole assembly, David expressed his praises to the Lord; ‘O Lord God of our Father Israel, praise your name for ever and ever! Yours is the mighty power and glory and victory and majesty. Everything in heaven and earth is yours. O Lord, and this is your kingdom. We adore you as being in control of everything. Riches and Honor come from you alone, and you are the Ruler of all mankind; your hand controls power and might, and it is at your discretion that men are made great and given strength. O God we thank you and praise your glorious name. But who am I and who are my people that we should be permitted to give anything to you? Everything we have has come from you, and we only give you what is yours already! For we are here for but a moment, strangers in the land as our fathers were before us, our days on earth are like a shadow, gone so soon without a trace. *1
As a child, did you play hide and seek with your friends? Do you remember jumping behind a big tree, to notice how quickly your shadow disappeared? This example illustrates the brevity life!
1. I Chronicles 29: 10-15 The Living Bible Yesterday, resilient, Elizabeth Edward, 61, died from her second bought with breast cancer. Like each of us, she faced life’s struggles. With hope she dealt with the grief of the death of a sixteen year old son in a car accident; the humiliation of a high profile husband’s infidelity; and being transparent to the world about her fight, surviving cancer. None of these conquered her spirit and faith in God.
President Obama said, “I came to know and admire Elizabeth over the course of the presidential campaign. In her life, Elizabeth Edwards knew tragedy and pain. Many others would have turned inward; many others in the face of such adversity would have given up. But through all that she endured. Elizabeth revealed a kind of fortitude and grace that will long remain a source of inspiration.”
James reminds us in the Bible, “How do you know what’s going to happen tomorrow? For the length of your lives is as uncertain as the morning fog - now you see it; soon it is gone.” *2
We recognize the wisdom of this passage as we remember the popular singer John Lennon, who sang songs of peace and love, being gunned down in front of his home, at 40 years of age, December 8, 1980.
Enjoy December 2010, remembering life is precious, fragile and brief. Jesus and Love came down at Christmas to give us eternal life in heaven!

Dec. 16, 2010 - The Spirit Of Christmas © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
I try to carry the Spirit of Christmas in my heart 365 days a year! Christmas is definitely the most wonderful time of the year. Love comes down at Christmas making life feel magical!
Jesus connects each of us to the supernatural God of the Universe!
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." John 3:16 KJV
During Christmas many people become extremely charitable, and angelic! Scriptures tell us that we may show hospitality to angels without realizing it.
“Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” Hebrews 13:2 KJV
“IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE,” is my favorite movie at Christmas.
The original story “The Greatest Gift” was written by Philip Van Doren Stern in November 1939. After being unsuccessful in getting the story published, he decided to make it into a Christmas card, and mailed 200 to friends and family in 1943. The Christmas card got into the hands of a movie producer, and “IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE,” was produced in 1946. The film stars James Stewart as George Bailey, a man whose imminent suicide on Christmas Eve brings about the intervention of his guardian angel, Clarence Odbody. Clarence shows George all the lives he has touched and the contributions he has made to his community.
“IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE” has been recognized by the American Film Institute as one of the 100 best American films ever made, and placed number one on their list for the most inspirational American films of all time. The miracle of life, and the miracle of Jesus, becomes real to us at Christmas. This is when the magical feeling of Christmas encompasses our soul. A miracle is an event or action that apparently contradicts known scientific laws. I hope you recognize your miracle this Christmas as you celebrate the birthday of Jesus.
Are you to busy making a living while spending precious little time making life a miracle? During the yuletide season you can be someone’s miracle!

Dec. 23, 2011 - What Makes Your Heart Sing? © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
When your heart sings, and you feel motivated, inspired, and joyful, you are in the flow of your life created by God. These times are awesome, stimulating, and gleeful! What makes your heart sing? If you have so much passion for your life’s work, that you can’t wait to get out of bed each morning and get started, God has planted that talent, and desire in your heart. Follow your bliss this beautiful Christmas season, as the spirit of the birth of Jesus Christ makes your heart sing. The beautiful music of the holidays makes melody in our hearts.
When the angel Gabriel visited Mary the mother of Jesus and said to her, “Hail, thou that is highly favored, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women,” I’m sure Mary’s heart sang! What higher calling could she have received than being chosen by God to be the mother of His Son? As we celebrate his birth 2010, we realize that Jesus is the reason for the season. He causes our hearts to sing!
My favorite song during the Christmas season is the HALLALLUJAH CHORUS!
ISAIAH 9: 6,7 The prophet Isaiah foretells the coming of the Prince of Peace. “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
“Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.”
CHRISTMAS PRAYER by Robert Louis Stevenson
Loving Father, Help us remember the birth of Jesus, That we may share in the song of the angels, The gladness of the shepherds, And worship of the wise men.
Close the door of hate and open the Door of love all over the world. Let Kindness come with every gift and Good desires with every greeting. Deliver us from evil by the blessing Which Christ brings, and teach us to Be merry with clear hearts.
May the Christmas morning make us Happy to be thy children, and Christmas evening bring us to our Beds with grateful thoughts, forgiving And forgiven, for Jesus’ sake. Amen

Dec. 30, 2010 - A Fresh Start - 2011 © by Shirley W. Mitchell, Life Is Precious™ - Fabulous after Fifty™
The year 1950 our family did not spend much time in the grocery store; because we saved our gas to drive to church every Sunday, also, we grew most of our food on the farm. However, every Wednesday we looked forward to a rolling store stopping in front of our home. Mom would buy staples for the kitchen, a piece of candy for my two siblings and me. Often she would buy colorful material to make a new dress on her Singer sewing machine.
2011 brings in a new trend in the South - rolling food trucks. Big Truck Tacos, Oklahoma City, Ok, stays open until midnight to serve icy bottles of real Mexican coke. With the slow down of the economy you may find these meals on wheels in Birmingham, Atlanta, and Nashville.
January 2011 is a great time to liven up your home with potted flowers. I remember during the 1950’s my mother-in-law growing beautiful little pots of purple, lavender, white, and pink African violets. The blooms helped keep the air fresh and fragrant. The cheerful plants always welcomed me into her home. For a fresh start this winter you might move colorful pansies indoors. Fresh, colorful cut flowers from the florist give a special celebratory atmosphere to you home, and peace lilies a sense of peace.
Making your New Years Resolutions for 2011, what an excellent time to schedule a quiet time with your heavenly Father every day. He created you, He loves you, He is always there for you. A fresh start, praying and communicating with the God of the Universe is prime time!
The last 2010 edition of USA TODAY screamed from the front page, (THE YEAR WE STOPPED TALKING!) A fresh start for our communication with our family and friends in 2011 is welcomed.
A good example, have dinner with your family members, banning cell phones, and any other electronic devices. Talking to each other, hearing the voices and observing the facial expressions are priceless. Laughter at the evening meal is the best medicine.
My New Years wish for you is the wish of the Apostle John as recorded in The Third Epistle of John verse 2, KJV. “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”
